Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued
Ok here's my most recent 3:
1) 21 and Over. This was kind of a Hangover meets American Pie meets Road Trip film, so I wasn't really expecting too much. Jeff Chang is a med-school student about to have a really important interview the day after his 21st birthday, when his best friends from school turn up to take him out for a beer or several. Then it all goes a bit wrong, the friends "lose" Jeff and cue much stupid (and weird!) scenes as they attempt to track him down. It loses its way a bit about 2/3 of the way through but it's funny enough; however there are no big stars in this film and none of the cast stands out enough to really given it any kudos. 5/10
2) Star Trek Into Darkness. I had REALLY been looking forward to this given that I am a bit of a sci-fi nerd and I have to say it didn't really disappoint at all. There were a few cringeworthy bits which are when a bit too much humour is chucked into the script but other than that there are a number of nods to the original series & films whilst keeping the reboot fresh. Pine is great as Kirk, Urban even better as McCoy (and he gets a classic "My God, Jim I'm a Doctor , not a..." line) but the real applause go to both Zachary Quinto's Spock and Benedict Cumberbatch as the film's bad guy. There's also a welcome appearance from Peter Weller and a small role for Noel Clarke. Plus there's always that bit with Alice Eve in her smalls
It's full of action and it's very well put together. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would heartily recommend it. 9/10
3) Fast & Furious 6. Hmmm what can I say? Please remove your brain and leave it at the door. This film is pretty much what you'd expect. Fast, witty banter (you can tell the cast had great fun making this), no regard for law enforcement (especially from those supposedly enforcing it) and a complete lack of understanding of simple physics by the production & stunt teams. The plot is thin, stupid and downright unbelievable. And I loved it. The whole main cast just seems to work well together; Letty's back, Gina Carrano kicks an awful lot of butt, there's fast cars, souped up old British Classics (Mk1 Escort and a Jensen Interceptor), stupid stunts and a ridiculous amount of on-screen testosterone whenever Vin Diesel & The Rock are in the same scene together. It's hilarious. Well worth a look if you liked the last one. 7/10

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued
And my latest Monday night at the cinema gave us The Hangover Part 3.
There's a few amusing bits in it, and Chow's character is amusing in part at least. However I can't help but think most of the actors in it were either only in it for a big paycheck (Ed Helms) or because they were contracted to it and had no choice (Bradley Cooper). Zach Galifinakis as Alan is still amusing, but not as good as the earlier movies. As such, they appear to be just going through the motions.
It's not that funny and is a fair bit darker than the first 2 films. That said, it IS better than the dire pile of turd that was Part 2 and at least there is something resembling a plot rather than just going over the same old stuff again. If you're a manic Hangover fan, then go ahead & watch it. If not, don't waste your time. 5/10

Funnily enough I watched the last film for the first time last night. Quite enjoyed it. Does Eva Mendes have a proper role in the new film? She was only in the end credits scene in number 5...
And sorry, I know he must be a good actor, but Benedict Cumberbatch has got to be the worst name in history!!!

Watch Friends with Kids, a comedy/drama written, directed and starring Jennifer Westfeldt.
Westfeldt plays a thirty-something New York, who decided to have a baby with her best friend, Parks and Recreation's, Adam Scott, as they see the detrimental affect having children has on their friends marriages - Bridesmaid stars Maya Rudolph and Chris O'Dowd, and Kirsten Wilg and Jon Hamm.
I've described it as dramedy, as the film doesn't have enough laughs to be a comedy, and doesn't have enough tension to be seen as a drama. I didn't find Westfeldt particularly compelling as a lead, and this meant I didn't care a lot for her character. She did have decent chemistry with Scott though.
O'Dowd was easily the funniest character, but like most of the cast was underused. Wilg in particular, was wasted in her role.
The film dragged even though it only lasted 100 minutes. 4/10

Norwegian, crime drama/thriller that was very good.
Well-paced all the way through and very funny in parts.
Watched it on the weekend, thought is was pretty damn good. Stretched credulity in places but what thriller doesn't? Spent much of the film trying to figure out what I'd seen the actor who played Clas Greve in before it clicked that he's Jaime Lannister in GoT.

Saw the version with Robert Redford which was ok but not exactly amazing. What made the book a classic was the quality of the prose, it's about as perfectly written as it's possible for a book to be, the storyline itself is quite weak so am keen to see what Baz Luhrmann managed to do with it.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued
Watched quite a few films recently:
Amazing Spider Man- Enjoyed the story that did a good job of portraying the human side of the super hero, and it was well acted Garfield and Stone were good in their roles but think Rhys Ifans was the star of the film as Dr Curt Connors. Think it may have been slightly lacking in action but it did a good enough job to get me looking forward to the sequel. Also it was better than I remember than the other Spider Man films being.
Happy Gilmore - V2's 'favourite comedy' with Sandler in a pretty good role from him, and a nice small role for Ben Stiller. Overall enjoyable if fairly predictable comedy not worthy of being considered the best comedy ever but not a bad one.
Captain America- Didn't know too much about this superhero before going into the film as I don't think they really show any sort of back story in Avengers. Don't know how faithful it was to the comics but I liked the story behind him and how it linked him to the films villain. Felt they did a good job of portraying the reasons for why somebody would choose him over the others to be turned into the super soldier. Though the story does require some suspension of disbelief that's required for most sci fi films and it's still a good film with good action scenes that means I'm happy to look forward to the sequel.
The Dictator - Very enjoyable film plenty of laughs throughout the film, not sure if it's my favourite film from Sacha Baron Cohen but it's still very good.
Star Trek - Not seen any other Star Trek films/tv shows so wasn't sure what to expect, but it was enjoyable with the action being as good as you can expect when it involves space ships firing at each other. Thought all of the actors did a good job, though I don't have anybody to compare them to.
Star Trek Into Darkness - Again having not seen others I didn't pick up on the nods to the old films/series that were meant to be included in the film. I would say this one had the better action and story over the first film and Benedict Cumberbatch was great.
Leonard Nimoy being involved seemed forced but then I don't know if a future spock is involved in previous Star Treks? Also as Spock is one for following the rules am I the only one who feels it's a bit weird to believe there isn't a rule against dating students?

Wife recently asked me (or someone who looks like me but isn't) to download it after a friend recommended it to her.
I saw about two minutes of it years ago and immediately told my wife I'd divorce her if she didn't start choosing friends with better taste in movies

Saw the Great Gatsby. Probably not for massive fans of the book/lovers of "Great American Literature" but much much better than I expected even when it was ridiculous. Would happily watch it again, well acted, IMO the fusion of 1920s and modern aesthetic and music worked really well and though the visual lushness might be seen by some to detract a little from the message of the story, I'm not sure I share that viewpoint.

Superb film with Ryan Golsing and Rachel McAdams falling in love, in 1940's America.
Nice story, good acting and a bit of a weepie.

Django (the 1966 version). The characters are fairly one-dimensional but this is fairly typical of the spaghetti western genre. Not too convinced of the ending but not a bad film all things considered.

Under no circumstances waste any time and/or money watching the great gatsby. Even as a date with the most wonderful woman you could image it would not be wort it.
The term "gash" may well have been coined in anticipation of this movies release.

Thats some harsh words Mac!!!! I will still watch it though
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A clockwork orange..
This is the first time I have seen it all the way though and wasnt drunk or stoned(at Uni off course)
Good works from Kubrick. However I know this film could be made darker!! I would be interested to see a remake of this story. It is so darkly themed but the surreal angle(70's techno age style) took some of the shock away for me
I didnt hate Alex enough and I didnt feel sorry enough for him towards the end if truth be told . But I appreciated this film for the first time. It is a strange but wonderfull film..
I have to give it a 10/10.

yes that's the one. Where he is sentenced to house arrest and spies on his good looking next door neighbour, only to discover his other neighbour might be the serial killer all over the news. His good looking ndn and his mate spy with Kale. This film is very good, I highly recommend it

Westworld is one of my favourites. One of those that I have to watch every time it's on tv. I understand what you mean about getting an update. It could be epic. But I think it'd be hard to better or match Yul Brynners performance.

Went to see the Stone Roses: Made of Stone last night. If you're a fan of the band you'll love it, not exactly hard hitting or insightful but Meadows is obviously a fan and does a brilliant job of capturing the excitement there comeback generated to folk like me.

The Bourne Legacy
Was actually ok I thought. Not a patch on the first three, thanks mainly to Matt Damon, but a good film in it's own right.

I saw After Earth at the weekend.
Truly, truly awful. Do not waste your money.

The trailer looked bad, but I guess it was worse than that.

Is it in the "so bad it's good" category? From the trailer it looked like it could rival Battlefield Earth which is accidentally enjoyable.

Well, the trailer made is look poo, but it's the sort of film where you think 'actually, there could be some good bits of action or high-adrenaline scenes'. I was expecting to see an awesome fight between a man with a spear and some monkeys, but nothing.
Jayden Smith's acting was poor, and he seems to have taken a step backwards from 'Pursuit of Happyness' when he was 5 years old.
Will Smith was ok, though a little 'stiff'. The script was awful.
I don't know where the budget went! All the spaceships seem to have been salvaged off the Battle Star Galactica sets.

Thanks, I'll wait for it to be released for rental & give it a miss then as well.
