I went to see Epic at the weekend with my eldest two. I have to say I really enjoyed it for a animated film. I usually buy some popcorn, give it to the kids and sleep for an hour or so but this was really enjoyable. Good solid story of good versus evil, lots of laughs, some sad bits and a smattering of adult humour. Thoroughly entertaining. The comedy double act between the slug and the snail was great.
Worrying though, it is the second animated film in a row that I have found the lead character quite attractive. Eep in The Croods and now Mary Katherine in Epic. I don't want it to happen but I can't stop it.

Dont worry - I have fancied every Disney lead since Beauty and the Beast.
You only need therapy if you start fancying Lightining McQueen and Sully

I have just been to see After Earth.
Please, please, what ever you do, avoid this massive waste of time. It has an utterly predictable plot, a few good ideas, some reasonable effects but there is a massive problem with it: Jayden Smith has all the acting ability of a bookcase. Will Smith spends most of his role in the film lying down & talking while dear Smithy Junior runs, jumps, falls over and unfortunately does not get rippped to pieces.
I was so undeniably bored during the film I found myself wishing that I could watch Battlesh!t again. It really was that bad. I get the feeling that Will Smith thought it would be a really good idea to showcase his boy in a film they could do together, and nobody in the industry dared to say "Will, seriously mate - your boy is rubbish - he can't act!"
This is the worst film I have seen this year - and I went to see Movie 43... 2.5/10 - and that's being generous.

My favourite Vietnam film by a distance. The thought of Fox in a war film seemed ridiculous but he was perfect in the role. Penn was good too, was quite an accompished actor in the day, now he only plays characters who spent all their time sobbing their eyeballs out.

Watched it again a couple of weekends back - it is a classic but if there's any film that could be improved with CGI it's this one - the dog-like creatures were bad at the time but now they're barely watchable and the scenes on top of the apartment could do with improving.

Saw the Great Gatsby yesterday - overall fairly positive. I don't claim to know the book that well (having read it once for English), and I know the previous film with Redford is meant to be a classic (although personally I found it rather erm dull - IMO the new version is a big improvement).
Slightly slow to get going I thought, the technique of not seeing Gatsby until half an hour in IMO slightly backfires (because we all know what Leo looks like and it felt a bit contrived to me). Once it gets going it flows well, and the visuals are very good and capture the excesses of the era perfectly. Strong performances from the 3 male leads; slightly disappointed with Carey Mulligan as Daisy - not convinced by her frequent changes of mood and it felt scripted.
It is far from the perfect film, but there is a lot to admire - 6.5 out of 10.
Had a heated discussion afterwards as to whether such a film could be judged independently of the book, or whether it can still be a good film if "it misses the point of the book" (not that anyone bar the author can really claim to know what the point of the book means).

Saw hangover 3 tonight, not very good.
They seemed to forget it was a comedy as it wasnt very funny and far too much focus on Alan who was a side character/comedy figure in the first two.
Best bit is the post credit part, stay for that if you are going!

Finally watched Django Unchained
It was good overall but there where things i had problems with one being Hip hop in a western i felt did not work or fit the film which made it feel out of place.
Also felt the film lost its Momentum after the death of Leonardo's character who i was expecting awesome shoot out with not that the shoot out was bad in the film, just thought i was more interested in the film during the parts where Calvin was alive.
Overall 8/10

Warzone,
Reliastic, disturbing, bleak, this film is truely as dark as it gets.. 10/10
Love honour and obey.
Black comedy in the brit gangster genre. Just not that good. But still some funny parts. 6/10
Dead man down.
Bar one plot hole that I just cant add up. Good revenge flick.. 7/10
Hangover 3
I preffered it to no.2 . However this is not a classic. A couple of Chou's comments cracked me up- 5/10
Jack the giant slayer
I was bored and feel asleep. What i saw 3/10

Might put a few more thoughts on the dedicated thread if/when a discussion gets going, but I liked it. A different enough take on Superman to justify its existence, certainly.

Warm Bodies - Complete and utter pap. Good first 10 minutes and then quickly descended into absurd romantic slush.
Gangster Squad - Enjoyable if somewhat hammy, thought Ryan Goslin (think that's the correct surname) was good.

Collateral - Really good film, been out for years but saw it was on sky movies and decided to give it a go. Very good.
I give it a year - Came in and out of this film, the mrs was watching it while played football manager For a brit film, it's pretty funny. Most times a brit rom/com tends to focus too much on 'britishness' but i felt this one didn't. Stephen Merchant's in it and he's on top form, the best man's speech he gives at the wedding is hilarious. It also has an ending not associated with romcoms, which i thought was a good touch.

Nothing in general but in the film she was rubbish, as was the writing of lois character, her lines etc.
Within the framework of the world created lois is unrealistic and kept drawing me out of movie mode.

while it wasn't a poor film, it wasn't good either. My impression when it ended was it was a very forgettable movie, ask me in two months time what it was likely and I won't be able to tell you

Speaking of Amy Adams, I've recently seen Drop Dead Gorgeous again (which I think might have been her big screen debut?). Very funny if you like black comedy, murder or beauty pageants (and preferably all three); ridiculous for the most part and a bit politically incorrect. Played out brilliantly by a mostly female cast - Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Denise Richards, the late Brittany Murphy... as well as Ms Adams as a nymphomaniac cheerleader-type.
Feels to me like it should have a cult following, but I'm not aware of much of a following at all - cult or otherwise!

Great shout mystir. That is one 'hard to watch' film but in the way film should be. Challenging, brave and thought provoking.
It was about the last time Ray Winstone played a decent character as well.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued
I thought Warzone tried way too hard to be gritty and ended up being pretentious rubbish. I read a Ray Winstone interview where he bleated on about how amazingly difficult the incest scenes were - you were pretending to shag a 19-year-old you idiot! Actors who take themselves too seriously should be tasered then drowned in public. The film would have been far more believable if the daughter was younger & the incest scenes were only suggested rather than shown in all their gratuitous glory. The scene near the end with the nappy was eye-rollingly contrived - good thing Tim Roth seems to have given up directing & stuck to acting.

You could have given it one of your erm 'special' Galted spins on the story?
Maybe the boy walks in on the sex scene with Ray and Lara Belmont and then, in a fit of rage, proceeds to bugger Winstone whilst simultaneously slapping his bum and shouting "who's the daddy now?".
Would that lift it to a 5 or 6?

Very good, you'd make a decent screenwriter Tino - a scene/scenes with Ray Winstone getting buggered would automatically earn a film two points.
It's a bit disturbing that you recently had me thinking of willies & now of buggery, but the films with the latter I can think of off-hand are quite good, Deliverance, Brokeback Mountain, Pulp Fiction.

I didn't really like Brokeback Mountain, I watched it too long after the release and the hype was well into overdrive. I couldn't understand what they were saying either. Deliverance and Pulp Fiction are excellent though.
What about Scum? Another Winstone favourite. That has a buggery scene in the greenhouse.

Man of Steel. I went to see this with a very open mind and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.Henry Cavill is surprisingly good in the main role - far better than Brandon Routh ever was, and thankfully this film doesn't really have the cheesy humour of the Reeve era.
I loved the fact that there was much more emphasis on Krypton itself at the start of the film (you actually get to see it!!) and whilst Russell Crowe appears to hardly be breaking sweat in this role, he is solid and not as irritating as I'd expected. The supporting cast is excellent, particularly Diane Lane as Martha Kent.
Michael Shannon is suitably over the top as Zod, but not in the camp way Terence Stamp was. Amy Adams was pretty but bland (or was that pretty bland?) and gave me nothing of the independence expected from Ms Lane. Never mind.
Without giving too much away, the "final fight" goes on a bit too long for my liking but it is a pretty decent stab at the genre. 7.5/10
