The Official *England to Grand Slam Glory 2013* Thread
First topic message reminder :
“It is not enough that we do our best; sometimes we must do what is required.”
Winston Churchill
In just over 4 weeks, Stuart Lancaster's England will start their quest for Grand Slam glory. It has to be said that this is England's best chance since 2003 for a Grand Slam. Really, for the Northern Hemisphere's biggest Rugby nation not to have clinched a Grand Slam for 10 years is a poor return. That will surely change on the 16th March.
“My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.”
Winston Churchill
This amount of optimism stems from a hugely encouraging 2012 for the English rugby team. 4 wins out of 5 in last year's Six Nations with a fairly new team, then a character-building tour to South Africa, running South Africa and Australia close at the home of Rugby, before ending the year by beating the World Champions and running in 3 tries against them. 2013 will be the year that it all comes together for England.
"The English have an extraordinary ability for flying into a great calm."
Alexander Woollcott
2013 for England will start with a game home to Scotland. Unless there's a downpour, Scotland have little hope. Expect England to rack up 25+ points and a multitude of tries against inferior opposition.
"Let not England forget her precedence of teaching nations how to live."
John Milton
Then, away to Ireland. Often, the Irish are seen as a bogey team for England but let's be rational. England are better in every department as they proved in 2012. I'll be looking for a very very good result from England in this game.
"You must hate a Frenchman as you do the devil."
Lord Nelson
The third game will be the biggest of the lot. Home to the French at Twickenham. Beaten by England in Paris in 2012, France will be beaten by England in London in 2013. No mistake though, this game will be the toughest challenge that England will face in the 2013 Six Nations. I expect England to just about edge out the French.
"We few. We happy few. We band of brothers."
William Shakespeare
On the 10th March, England will be on the home straight. Home to Italy, mere cannon fodder against the mighty mighty England. 4 wins out of 4, Grand Slam in sight.
"Ever the faith endures, England, my England."
W.E. Henley
The crowning glory will be against England's little brother, Wales. No doubt they'll be up for this game, they love a game against their bigger brother and the chance to upset the odds. What is it Wales, 7 losses out of 7 since last year's Grand Slam? After a tough 20 minutes, England's superiority and class will show. Grand Slam clinched.
“You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.”
Winston Churchill

Re: The Official *England to Grand Slam Glory 2013* Thread
In the first half, England were a bit ragged, and France looked far superior than the team which had played Italy and Wales. But England managed to stick with the French and were only one point down at HT. The second half was completely different, England were dominant and made it count on the scoreboard - 14-3 in that half to England tells you all you need to know.
For the Italy game, I'd say Hartley and Lawes need to be dropped for Youngs and Morgan (if fit). Ashton could find himself dangerously close to the chop as well.
But that's a worry for another day - 3 out of 3. England proving their superiority. The 2 most difficult games are behind England, in sight is the Grand Slam!

England are on the way to a Grand Slam. With 3 wins out of 3 games.
But Wales in Cardiff could well be a game too far.
But like Scott Quinnel used to say As long as we beat the English.

Maj,
Its the old 'GS is yours to lose' quote now I am afraid. Italy should be dealt with quite easily and I feel a fair few points maybe racked up.
I have said on another thread that whilst I hop[e England don't win the Slam I think they will win the championship on points difference.

So despite many red jumpered predictions - this thread has yet to be renamed!
Got to be honest I thought it was a goner when I saw the French Teamsheet.
Well done England - don't balls it up by losing to Italy!

But Wales in Cardiff could well be a game too far.
But like Scott Quinnel used to say As long as we beat the English.
When did Scott Quinnell ever say that? Considering he only did it once (I think), I can't imagine that being true.

Ok I can see the expected England Grand Slam being rapidly devalued.
England are rubbsih after all.
I think it has started and here are the reasons for devaluation:
Vs Scotland - Scotland still rebuilding and England are arrogant (Telfer).
Vs Ireland - Ireland weakened by injuries and the game was dull
Vs France - Mental French management messed up with HB & prop subs
Vs Italy - anyone can thrash Italy (well apart from mental France)
Vs Wales - Gatland AWOL, dodgy ref calls, missed offsides and boring penalties don't mean you won.
So net result, worst championship in living memory, and it won't count.

Scotland and Italy are still rather gash. France are in deep trouble, the first time they've lost 3 Six Nations games in a row for a long time, not coincedence. Ireland and Wales are pretty injury struck to be fair. But by the time you come to Cardiff Wales would have gone from strength to strength and there will not be any excuses.
Considering we were told 05, 08 and 12 tournament wins were devalued this is all pretty rich coming from you lot when you consider the above. Not to mention France vs Wales was the worst game in history but Ireland vs England was a tough, hard fought, excellent win...

Of course there isn't, which is why you probably haven't heard the words 'devalued' murmoured yet (except from your own of course).

Morg is just up set because Wales are not going for back to back Grand Slams.....Although he would be very happy if Wales beat England in Cardiff.
Even if Wales dont win another game.

A fair few did mysti. Is it me or did this thread suddenly become unfunny, coinciding with some clueless BS being sent directly above? Some people just can't think for themselves .

Morg,
wummers both sides of the dyke mate, apologies for ours, and pl dont scowl at a jest. It seems all GS's get 'devalued'on these boards - jealousy mostly.
The record book says 3 Wales GSs, doesn't mention the 'D' word, so that is repeat 3. You can only beat what is in front of you as the cliché goes and congrats to Wales for doing that 3 times since 2005.
I hope England get one this time, but I'm sure Italy & Wales will have something to say about that on the pitch. A cracking finale at the Millenium.

Lewis moody has said it would be bad for England to win the slam as he thinks it would mean we are peaking too early.
What a load of nonsense, smacks of jealousy
