Pacific Rim
Anyone following Guillermo del Toro's latest project?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vKz7WnU83E
Presumably, the target audience is anyone who likes big frickin' monsters, giant robots or Idris Elba.

Re: Pacific Rim
More spectacle and a bit more talking. Not exactly much more detail added to what we know though (monsters invade, man creates giant robots to fight back).

Showed my wife the trailer for this the other night to convince her to come and see it.
Not sure she bought my sales patter of, "Look, look, giant monsters, and wait for it, wait.............GIANT ROBOTS!!!!!!".

Re: Pacific Rim
This looks rubbish. Full of undoubtedly impressive effects, it appears to be a combination of Transformers, Real Steel, Godzilla and Independence Day. And I reckon it will belly flop at the box office.
It just doesn't have "it" as far as I am concerned.

Four words.
GIANT MONSTERS, GIANT ROBOTS!!!!!!
In all fairness I'm not expecting City of God or The Deer Hunter, just two hours of leave your brain on the doorstep enjoyable guff.
The clip I saw of Idris Elber giving an "Independence Day" rallying of the troops speech was the clincher, hokum at its finest.
Did I mention it appears to have GIANT ROBOTS fighting GIANT MONSTERS!!!

Re: Pacific Rim
Really looking forward to this as Guillermo seems to have somewhat of a passion for the the genre and might actually bring something deeper and more stylish to the table than we have seen before.
I don't think it owes anything to a film like Transformers (which is terrible), Real Steel or Independence Day in its making, though I do agree on Godzilla but that's for a different reason. If anything this film is a homage to Japan and its influences hence my belief Godzilla has its mark here due to its own influence on Japanese anime makers. If this film has a direct influence anywhere its the anime genre, there's countless Mecha/Monster anime from Gundam to Full Metal Panic and many in between. Though for all intents in purposes it looks so far to owe many of its aspects to NGE more than anything else.
It might turn out terrible and I'm not expecting a masterpiece of a movie (though NGE was quite special in that respect) but what I am hoping for is an engaging fun action experience with some character depth, story and decent dialogue.
Time will tell.

It does look like Power Rangers now that you mention it... Can't believe it was 20 years ago now . I remember the first two/three series' being my favourite.

Re: Pacific Rim
Took my two sons to see this today, yes it's nonsensical claptrap plot wise but as a two hour giant robot v giant monster fest then it does the job. Really enjoyed it.
