Divisional Round Weekend Discussion Thread!
First topic message reminder :
So the wildcard weekend was quite frankly crap, but the divisional shapes up to be a little humdinger!
Firstly we have the two AFC games with the same 4 teams returning to this stage as did in 2011/12!
Baltimore travel to Denver in what I think could be a potential banana skin for the Denver. Everything points towards a Denver win quite easily, but I quite fancy Baltimore to make this a close contest and actually nick the game. Look for Ray Rice to bounce back with a big game.
The Texans travel to Foxboro to take on the Patriots in what promises to be a very tense matchup. I am obviously as a New England fan gonna pick my Pats, but I think Houston could put up a good fight in this game! All depends on if Matt Schaub can find any sort of form, if he can they have a legit shot, if he plays like he did against Cincy then Houston are heading home in my opinion.
Then the NFC which has the better of the matchups I think!
Seattle travel to Atlanta in a real close matchup! I like the Falcons to take this one, not because they are infinately better, because I think both teams are quite even teams, but purely because in my opinion this is a game Atlanta just HAS to win. If they lose the media will be so smug, I will find it funny! But on a serious note this is one Atlanta has to have, and with the homefield advantage I fancy them to just edge it
In the matchup of the week Green Bay travel to Candlestick to take on San Francisco in a game which should make you fall in love with football all over again. Key to the matchup for me is whether Green Bay can protect Aaron Rodgers. If they can I can't see the Niners hanging with Green Bay's offence. And on that note it is paramount that San Fran get Justin Smith back. Aldon Smith has looked lost without him, and if he isn't back I like Green Bay's chances of protecting Rodgers

Re: Divisional Round Weekend Discussion Thread!
I don't get where the line is to be classed as elite. I think the only way to back up that kind of adjective is to have actually won something, which the Seahawks failed to do this year. They didn't even win their division, and they beat a one legged QB in the playoffs.
Seattle are a good side and Wilson looks like he can lead the offence, but it seems like a lot of the franchise is all mouth and no trousers, so to speak.

And yeah, Seattles big achievement this year was beating a 1 legged RG3. They remind me of the Jets if I'm honest. Lots of talk landing themselves in the media, but not that much behind it.

The Eagles are a NFC East team. We're always in the media, so that argument doesn't work at all.

In reality the Redskins beat themselves (well Shanahan beat himself), won't deny that the Seahawks have a pretty good D but your O is far from elite.

By the way, Wilson was nothing until the Seahawks started copying what RG3 was doing. Better get used to it Cherries -where RG3 leads, Wilson will follow. That will be the natural order of things for the next decade or so.

Not sure, you're playing the AFC and NFC South as well as an improved NFC West. Texans, 49ers, Saints, Falcons (who beat you yesterday, did you see that?) won't be gimmes. Add the Colts too. Tricky schedule.

Problem with that Cherries is that it doesn't matter what meaningful measurable you look at from this season, Griffin tops Wilson in all of them. Completion percentage, yards per attempt, total yards, QB rating, TD:INT ratio, sacks taken - Robert Griffin III beats Wilson in all of them. Like I say, where Robert Griffin III leads, Russell Wilson follows.
Here's an interesting stat for you - of the top 29 QBs in the league ranked in terms of total passing yards, Russell Wilson had the fewest number of passing attempts per game. In other words, no QB was asked to do less for his team than Wilson.

Sorry but most of that is wrong. Lynch is not the second best back in the league imo, his fumbles have happened too much in the playoffs, give me a fully fit McCoy or Foster over him any day. Sherman is not an elite corner, he is good but Revis is what you call elite. Carroll lol, he made some very rookie mistakes last night. I'd say Frazier, Arians/Pagano etc deserve it much more. Depends on what you count as a young team, average age of 49ers offense is under 27 years old and of the D only Justin Smith is at an advanced age. I like Wilson but the offense is still made for him so that he can thrive, that can't be sustained once teams figure him out. People have the wrong idea even about Kap after the game the other night, that is the most he has run in the NFL so far and he has actually been a good pocket passer at times. I'll reserve judgement on Wilson until I see him do that consistently. Wilson isn't the recipe for long term success in the NFL, never know, maybe Harbaugh would consider swapping Alex Smith for him. I'd like to have Wilson as Kap's backup over Tolzien. Not much in it though. Agree that anyone would take Luck or RG3 over Wilson. Lets even bring Kap into the discussion. They are all bigger, faster, have stronger arms and don't need to have a gimmicky offense quite so much. I realise you are a WUM but wannabe please, there are no dynasties in the NFL at all right now. All I can say is that I'm happy to be a 49ers fna

I do have to say that for Wagner to come in as a 2nd round pick and run a defence which has been good is very impressive. Him, Kuechly and Hayward (spelling) for DROTY for me

I wasn't as impressed by Kuechley as others tbh. Seemed to accumulate quite a lot of tackles down the field.
Harrison Smith for me. Has set the tone for a physical Min secondary that has done a complete 180 this season.

Safety might be the most difficult position for a rookie to adapt to. If you blow your assignment theres nobody covering your ass. We see a few LBs adapt quickly to the NFL every year

I'll be honest, there is no link, I just checked it out on NFL.com's player stat's page but Brady is at number 4 behind Stafford, Brees and Romo and just ahead of Luck and Ryan.

Robert Griffin III's career probably won't be over in the next couple of years either mikey. Will his injury change the way he plays the game? Yeah, it probably will. Will it mean the end of his career? No, not unless something else unforseen happens. We saw enough from Griffin this year in terms of his accuracy, his football intelligence, his toughness and his arm strength to suggest he's more than capable of being a QB that sits in the pocket more. He can do it and has done it. His ability to run shouldn't be diminished by his injury and he will still be capable of being elusive in the pocket. It's just that it wouldn't be smart to have out of the pocket running downfield as much he did this season. Not smart at all!

Griffin has some work to do mentally if hes going to become a pocket passer. That side of his game isn't that close atm.

That said, so does Wilson. His pocket presence in particular. Seems to react like a hamster on caffeine at the slightest hint of pressure.

If Griffin is becoming a pocket passer not only is he going to have to adjust to that, but so is Morris in the backfield. Yes he ran very well this year but with the read option seemingly going (they would be stupid to put RG3 on deliberate run plays) it will be interesting to see how Morris does

Does RG3s agility give him time to pick out passes though. For me, he can hold onto the ball too long, take his movement away and he will have less time to pick out a pass.
I still think Griffin is a 'now' QB.

What's a "now" QB?
I don't buy that RG3 holds on to the ball too long. Amongst the things that he has been praised for this season are his decisiveness and quick release. A QB that held on to the ball too long would not be picked off just 5 times in 15 games. I think we're making too much of this "pocket passer" thing. The guy can zip a pass and he can throw it long. He's also smart and has a tremendous work ethic which will help with any learning he has to do. We're also talking here like he's going to be a cripple. Yeah, he'll need to be careful but he'll still be elusive enough to move around the pocket at least as well as any other QB and almost definitely better than most.

Re: Divisional Round Weekend Discussion Thread!
Re RGIII and how he'll be post injury if he can't run the way he did before it happened. And how the rest of his (and any QB's required skill set holds up)
People are forgetting he is a) a rookie which means he has time to learn and b) injury is an opportunity to LEARN. For the next few weeks he'll have nothing but time on his hands to watch video and rewatch his and other games and learn. Read his defence. See how they try to get to a QB like him and QBs not like him. Then when it comes time to practice, he can use his injury to good effect in that he won't be able to or allowed to run and move in the pocket, so that'll force him to use the ball in other ways.
Fark it, he can play a 12 man D with a 10 man O minus his running game in pratcice and see how he gets on. He is not the finished player. That is what makes him such a good prospect. No QB, not Manning or Brady or Dan the Man were at their best in their 2nd & 3rd seasons, never mind their Rookie year.
And because he is young, he could well come back just as good on his legs when fully healed and fit. look at Wes Welker. blew out his ACL and is as good right now as he ever was.
Looking forward to the Conference games. Go Patriots!

Also Cherries, good hustle on holding your hands up. The internet + strong emotions rarely equate to balanced assessment & rationale expression. You're not alone in that failing.
Besides, smack talk on boards is what makes us hurler's in the ditch (that's an Irish sporting expression, arm chair coach or player) what we are; we know EVERTHING! Even when we don't.
