Only 79 points but it was a different time, only 3 defeats and at the end of the day 3 trophies > 1.
Chelsea had a great side in 04/05 but you can't take away from the fact United in 99 and 08 won multiple trophies - managing a season in order to do this is a tall order.

Chelsea weren't that far off a treble, they won the Premier League with a record points haul which is impressive, but also got to the semi-finals of the Champions League where they were knocked out by one of the best Champions League goals of all time courtesy of Luis Garcia and a excellent call by the referee/linesman. They also won the Carling Cup. There is a very fine line between that season and the 98/99 Treble season to be honest.

BAE is (IMO) rubbish. I've never rated him.
Anyways, I'm hoping Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle get through tonight, and Liverpool put Zenit's fans in their place.

It's pretty far off to be fair, also the league cup doesn't compare to the fa cup due to the fact the final is in march!

How's it so far off? The only defeat in the league came in mid-October. To go through to May winning a knockout cup and reaching the last four of the Champions League whilst going unbeaten in the league has to be acknowledged as one of the best seasons by a Premier League champion.

I totally agree about BAE (Benoit Assou Ekkoto). I think Naughton is a better LB personally (and he is a natural RB)

Indeed. I reckon they need to invest in a good LB in the summer or buy another CB and play Vertonghen there.

On a side note, Dembele has been an excellent capture. Was a bit of a surprise move when they took him from Fulham and he's excelled in his deeper role at Tottenham. Puts in a very good shift every game.

The United team of 98-01 are the best team in premier league history, i'm not overly concerned by points totals, winning the titles is what matters most and we won the treble as well two subsequent league titles. Teams may have done better in the premier for a single season but 5 major trophies in 3 years is thus far untouched, the closest was the United team of 06-09.

I think the current United team has what it takes to become one of those great Premier League sides. Will only get better.

The Villa surviavl bus pulls up to the Emirates later.
I'm actually quietly confident we will get the 3 points.
Well I've put the curse on that one, probably lose 4/5-0

Fulham vs Stoke to get the fire burning today
As for Norwich we welcome Everton today, gonna be a tough game, but I reckon we'll get a point out of it!

I must have the magic touch. On twitter anyway.
Was slagging off Chelsea right before they scored on Thursday and was slagging off Berbatov just before he scored today. Cracking finish, how nobody was marking a man of his reputation on the edge of the box is beyond me.

To be fair mj he'd been having a quiet game prior to that.
That's just him, is it worth 3/4 games of him doing nothing for those magc moments to crop up once or twice a season.

No Bent in squad.
Bennett in for Vlaar.
Think my 4/5-0 might not be far off.

I think the game at the Emirates will be a goal fest. Something along the lines of 5-2.

He did the same thing at United. He's got the rep for doing things like that. No matter how quiet he's been in the game defenders should know he's capable of those moments.
Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
You do wonder how good Berbatov could have been had he been bothered to bother.

Was a good move that dragged stokes defense out of position and they defended te initial cross with the men they had.

i think if berbatov 'bothered' he wouldnt be the same man, or necessarily be a better player or goal scorer. its just who he is

Yes, Jason Mohammad (spelling?), the bald Welsh guy. I think it's funny how a lot of people really don't like Gabby, especially when it comes to football.

Bayern are currently 3-0 up on 10 man Bremen after 50 minutes. There's no CL hangover from them then.

It's not really been a vintage season so far for the "Big 3" leagues...
(As it stands)
Man Utd, 15 points ahead of 2nd placed Man City
Bayern Munich, 18 points ahead of 2nd placed Borussia Dortmund
Barcelona, 12 points ahead of 2nd placed Atletico Madrid

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
It's not actually surprised me at all at what's happened. Bayern, United & Barcelona all have the same thing in common, when they lose a title they make sure they win it back straight away and restore order. The players that they have hold that winning mentality, drive and determination to succeed year in year out and when they dont win.......it hurts them. Mentally they are supreme and they hold that valuable experience which many clubs don't have. The 2012 Champions have squads that had never won major league titles before in Manchester City & Dortmund and even Madrid had not won a title since 07/08. Also Madrid have just blown up through dressing room unrest with Mourinho to add to their problems. Not surprised with this season's events.

So then people who do you think are going down after today?
I think QPR barring a miracle are gone, Reading and Wigan to join them imo. Villa vs Wigan final day of the season at the DW is looking to be a decider and a heck of a game!!!
Huge win for us today and a huge loss for Everton. We should be safe now (barring a massive drop in form) and Everton seem to have reversed there usual end of season form with there usual start of season form!

I have this inkling that Reading will put QPR out of their misery on April 28th. I think it's going to be 3 from QPR, Reading, Wigan, Southampton and Villa though Sunderland are not out of the mire either.
Newcastle have way too much quality to go down, don't they?..

Shades of Sheff Utd v Wigan in 07.

I know I shouldn't but I find something funny about that happening.
Not the actual players crying though. In fact, if i see any player crying after a bad loss, I'm glad they're showing they care. A la Chabal in the 2007 RWC.

No such thing IMO. You can't be too good to go down, but you can be too bad to stay up. Anyway, I think they're safe and the final two relegation spots are between Reading, Villa and Wigan.

I've only ever cried once after a football match. 1989 when Arsenal did us 2-0 to take the title. It was a Friday night and my olds went out for the night leaving me with my Man Utd loving cousin. My god did she rub it in, the byatch! The scars never go away, ever!
