Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
Depends what Mourinho wants. If he wants to continue this nomadic lifestyle of management then Chelsea will be a good move. 3-5 years if it goes alright and then he can leave and blame Roman, no one will blame him.
Or he could go to United and try to cement himself as a legend of management, take over from one of the best and rise to the challenge.
With Terry, Lampard, Drogba gone or on the way out/to retirement you could see Mourinho not bothering as its not the same as it was. I could see him making Cahill and Luiz much better players than they are and I think if Torres is going to be changed by any manager it will be Jose.
Equally, by the time the United post is available he will be coming into a club that will be very different. No Fergie, Giggs or Scholes, time to build anew.
Or he could just go to City and do what he did at Chelsea. Theres a good deal of similarities between the state of each club. The attitude of a winner is one that Joe Hart in particular would enjoy working under. I'd expect him to win the Champions League with City.

I like your points about Cahill, Luiz and Torres. Jose made Joe Cole the great player he was before his long term injury he got playing under Hiddink.
Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
Jose is not the manager who turns average players into great ones, if a player isn't good enough or doesn't fit into his plans they're moved on pretty quickly. Players like Kezman, Shevchenko, Crespo and others were moved on pretty quickly or not used by Mourinho if they didn't fit his plans.
If he came, I can only see Torres going out the door.

Well yes I agree Chris. Mourinhio with a budget is possibly the best out there . He would sort out city no end..
Much harder task at united. Tbh I can't see Man U getting another ferguson .I think Man U should just use an ex player and get him as ferrgys assistant and let him shadow him for the next few years etc.. And then take over.. Man U without fergie or someone similar is only half the team

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
I've got to agree with the point but disagree with your sentiment. Luiz and Cahill in particular are talented footballers and both have the assets to be very good in defensive roles. Jose demands standards and demands discipline and I think he would be able to bring out the very best in those two. I dont think its a coincidence that the best football of John Terry's career was under Jose.
Anyone Jose puts his faith in to do the job he asks generally does it. Joe Cole is a definite example. I will spend the rest of my life bemoaning the mismanagement of Joe Cole, but Jose made him into the type of player he wanted, even if it restricted his natural talent.
Cahill for one is a player who has everything about him to be an international class defender. Martin O'Neill is meant to have said something along the lines of "Cahill is a fantastic footballer, if only he could defend". I think hes getting better and better at that part and would rate his positional play above and beyond Ivanovic at centre back, a player who is lauded in some parts. There is another step to go for him and then he'd be my first choice at centre back for Chelsea and England. Hes progressing especially well considering hes barely had a full term manager at that club since his arrival.
Id put Mourinho at United on the basis of his reputation above almost anything else. He will demand respect and he wont be scared of what has come before him. The fear of Fergie will live on at United above many managers heads. Mourinho would probably not give two hoots, and he clearly earned the respect of Ferguson a long time back.
On Torres, my point is mainly that it would be sh*t or bust. Hes not gonna be mollycoddled by Jose.

Luiz has all the awareness of a 2 year old with sunglasses. Forward runs and tricks hide the fact hes a liability
Cahill never struck me as a guy who would be that good.

As i have siad previously i would love to see mourinhio at united.
However I am kind of worried that even the best manager out there wont be able to emulate fergie straight away!
Will man u be happy with 2-3 years of nothing.
I mean lets be honest here if fergie came to united today- he would have lasted 2 years max!!
If I was a man u fan. I would be thinking about chosing very very wisely about the next manager and give him time.(i would idealy keep fergie on board as a manager consultant for him-And get someone without his own ethos to football, who will take on board what fergie has to say etc)
If that first manager isnt given time or have the ethos of united runing through his blooid and leaves(or gets sacked quickly) it could start a chain reaction of switching managers like all the other prem clubs!

Don't know if I agree with the idea of ferguson staying on as a consultant to the manager. Might work, but could just increase the pressure on the new man. Think the new man would need to be given complete control to be his own man. Mind you as a liverpool fan it seems I have been waiting for the last 10 years or more for problems after ferguson's departure....the guy is immortal

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
Its all an IF with Cahill for me. Hes still improving even in a team thats a shambles. Fit the consistency and some over signs together and I think he'd be a class defender. In a position where England have a lot of ifs over in the current and future. I do struggle to think who I want in that centre defence in the next few years. Hes at least worth the spot until United can guide Phil Jones into the centre of defence.
Luiz needs discipline, not a club with barely any cohesion and a blame culture. Maybe a holding midfielder who can do is damn job too, blooming Mikel.
Not sure why I'm defending them, I would have no qualms with Chelsea going more and more bonkers everyday

Not only has Rafa said he's got a good relationship with Roman but also with Emenalo. His time must be down to days/a couple of weeks rather than months.

I hope Hawkeye get the contract btw..
they spent loads due to fifa and then found it it was on a wim!
Good british company!
It is funny how all this has happend(well in FIFA anyway) due to the goal not let in against england!! (even though it wasnt a goal anyway I must add)
when lamps goal was dissalowed. blatter tells the world- its one of them things..
When england get the benefit blatter tweets. GLT must be in place!

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread part 3
I have mixed emotions around technology in football, goal line clearly has a place in the sport but where it stops is my major concern.
By adding in GLT you open up the argument to offside, penalty decisions, serious foul play and violent conduct. I think almost every football fan would agree that a censor in the goal which alerts the referee is acceptable but the aforementioned circumstances would be taking it too far.

I'm looking forward to it, both my club and country have fallen foul to the lack of GLT in big big games over the years so it will be a welcome addition to the EPL next season especially if like you say Oakey that the decision is made so quickly.

Our (spurs) fa cup defeat to Chelsea last season and the goal that never was from Pedro Mendez against united are the ones that stick in my mind.

Not really. They deserve everything that is coming to them. QPR represent everything that is wrong with the sport today. Them going down should be a reminder that money can't buy you happiness. Not that it will mind.

Also the only thing guaranteed that Rednkapp would have brought to the England team (should we have been unlucky enough to have seen him take that post) would have been the dentists chair. A total myth of a manager.
I thought he did a decent job at Spurs but he did have a superior in Daniel Levy. It looks like he has a free reign at Loftus Road. Is there a bigger mug in football than Tony Fernandez?

QPR's stint in the premier league has been a total shambles, the amount of money that's gone out of that club is shocking, the players Warnock brought in last summer were no where near good enough, then Mark Hughes followed suit and now Harry, you would have thought they would have learned their lesson.
I seriously worry for the clubs future when they go down, they have put the house on the transfers of Remy and Samba which could well cripple then come the summer.
This is the blue print for a promoted clubs of what not to do once you've achieved promotion into the premier league. The likes of Norwich and Swansea are perfect examples of how to conduct yourselves not only in the transfer market but on and off the pitch.

Stoke are extremely hard to beat especially at home, will be tough for West Ham to get anything more than a draw today, if you play the way you did against spurs you'll stand a chance of getting something out of the game though.

there are some really good bets on today. I can see upsets and there is good odds on them.
QPR to beat Southampton is 5.8! thats almost 5/1
west brom to draw v chelsea is 5.3
Reading to draw everton is 5.6!
Newcastle to beat swansea is 4(or 3/1)
all in my lucky 26!

Probably as must win as a game gets with 11 to go for QPR. Southampton win and they're 13 points clear of QPR.
Wigan win later and QPR could be 10 points off safety.

Massive, massive result for QPR today. A priceless away win and things don't look so bad. Routine for United - 8 wins from their final 10 games will give them a final total of 95 points.
