Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
Edit - Original 1000 or so posts on this thread are here https://www.606v2.com/t38845p950-scotland-squad-for-the-6-nations - KiwiPete
No but there may be other players he feels could be better captains, given the strong representation of Glasgow in the squad, Kellock maybe.

Regarding the delay in announcing the Scotland captain, Johnson can't really be thinking about playing Stroks at 6 instead of brown can he?

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
I'm still not convinced Kellock should be in the 1st XV let alone captain. Robinson got burned with that one before.
Your captain has to be the best player in is position otherwise we look like a bunch of goons.

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
True but Kellock would be considered the natural leader by 19 of the 35 man squad because he leads them week in, week out, with a fair amount of success. Not many of the team have played with Kelly Brown on a weekly basis in the last two years. If things start going against us and big Al is on the pitch some of the Warrior's players could look to him for leadership instead of Brown, this could undermine the whole team.

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
True enough Solid, however Kellock's play for Glasgow is never in question. He is consistantly excellent for Glasgow. A bit like DeLuca though, he can never transfer that brilliance to a Scotland shirt.

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
KB will be the captain. I reckon it's just the usual SRU media mismanagement that they meant to announce it last Monday, not this Monday and when the 6N photocall came around they sent Kelly but still refused to actually announce him as captain!

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
Radge there is no doubting the dilemma facing the management team when it comes to this decision. However I believe the best way for us to take something from this tournament is to play with the mantra Keep It Simple Stupid, wear down the opposition with our pack and then unleash our back three. This would also be ideal for Big Al and in my book if we are playing like this he sneaks it over Brown based on the representation of Glasgow in the squad.

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
Your captain has got to stay on for 80 minutes - if that was Kellock then it would mean Gray would have to be subbed off, which I don't think is a good idea.
And anyway this is just the person that has (C) written next to their name - there are plenty leaders in the squad and it won't just be the captain doing all the talking.

Exactly.
It'll be Brown, Kellock, Hamilton, Laidlaw, Jackson, Beattie all leading whether by example or by their talking...

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
I'm in two minds over the whole Kellock/Hamilton debate. As everyone has been saying, Kellock is an incredible leader and does a great job for Glasgow, but he's a bit lightweight, despite being 18st 8lbs (according to Wikipedia), when it comes to hitting rucks and in the scrum, but can command the lineout. Hamilton has almost a full stone on him at 19st 7lbs and offers that aggression at ruck time but is prone to giving away penalties. I doubt Kellocks presence would undermine Brown as captain. There are always going to be vocal players on the field. It’s not just the captain who speaks. Is Kellock the kind of impact sub you want? I’d think Hamilton would add more coming on with 20 to go. I’m still not convinced either way.

On a serious note from a Mod point of view - that's over 1000 posts and no Wumming, no reported posts and all round good behaviour. There's been good banter, informed debate, absolute nonsense conversations - but no personal insults or deliberately winding people up.
Pats on the back for all the 606V2 Scots!
That really is a rare occurrence.

Re: Scotland squad for the 6 Nations
Maybe the thread will still be going by then....
I could just change the name of the thread for every new occasion:
"Scotland squad for the 6N"
"What we have learnt from the 6N"
"A Scottish take on the Lions tour"
"Why there should have been more Scots on the Lions tour"
"Matt Williams makes a dramatic return to Scotland management"
"Scotland squad for the summer tour to South Africa"
"Matt Williams mysteriously eaten during safari while on summer tour"
"What Scotland learnt on the summer tour"
"Scotland squad for the AIs"
"What Scotland learnt from the AIs"
"Scotland end of year review"
We could get thousands of posts over the year!

Songs will be sung and ale will be quaffed.
Oh yes the few will remember.

"Can we get some other cutlery instead of a spoon?"
Moving off these potential thread names (I know I'm sorry) Johnson came out and said that he hadn't picked his captain yet because he hasn't been with the squad that long and his coaching team hadn't had a chance to speak with Brown ahead of the media thing. Therefore, he was waiting until Monday to name the captain once he'd had a chance to get all the coaches together for their input.
Not a very exciting reason for not naming the captain yet (I'm sure it'll be Brown) but sounds plausible
