Talking boxing with casuals
Every now and then a big fight comes along that grabs the Joe Publics imagination, and in conversation with casual boxing fans/ general sports fans,us as boxing fans go into slightly more detail when analysing the "hyped up" fighters strengths and weaknesses, and then giving your predicted outcome.
Do you ever find that the question along the lines of " have you ever boxed?",often comes along.
Then when you answer no(if the answer is no,such as my case, not counting white collar), you get a look as if to say "then WTF you going on about then".
Just an observation that got me thinking whether or not its just my paranoia or is quite common?

Re: Talking boxing with casuals
Slightly different for me.
Because I talk about the podcast at work and who we are interviewing, I do come over as a boxing geek (its even worse when I talk about our wrestling interviews!) which couldnt be further from the truth (I know you are all thinking that I am a boxing expert after hearing e on the podcasts).
The sad thing is, a lot of my friends have no interest in boxxing - even to the extent that when I had press tickets to a Ricky Burns fight last year, my mates didnt want to come as it was a Saturday night.
Since developing this site, my interest in boxing has gotten a lot more. I would credit you lot, but its been down to having to mod you

It's like if I want to talk about football, then brilliant, but noone seems to be bothered about boxing unless it's Hatton or in my neck of the woods,Froch.

At least people around you are interested in Froch. None of my friends really care about boxing since Hatton retired. I'm thankful for the hour I get talking about boxing with Adam and Chris these days.

Even if I do talk over you for the most part of it
Re: Talking boxing with casuals
Never asked if I had ever boxed when talking about boxing to casuals because the people I knew, knew that I watch alot of boxing so generally they understood that I had a better knowledge than they did
Boxing doesn't come up alot though in comparisons to some other sports but Pacquaio (I have a really close fillipino friend), Mayweather (one of the few who is truly recognised worldwide) and a couple domestic fighters who are at world level like Khan/Haye/hatton are the pick of the conversations and only when something happens like Khan KOed, Haye/Chisora brawl

Re: Talking boxing with casuals
There is a lot of casual in the blue oyster........
Tend to keep away from talking Boxing with casuals because they tend to believe everything they read or see on the TV..........and it can get beyond irritating putting them straight...
So when someone wants to talk Boxing I tend to say I don't follow it.......
Then again most of my colleagues are posh types who think they know it all anyway!!!..........

Most of the time people I speak with rate brawlers 'entertainers' rather than technicians. A Mayweather or Hopkins is boring yet Khan, Maidana and Pacman are the best boxers out their, the sport UFC and the movie Rocky springs to mind when I chat with casual fans.

''Khan wins because of sheer speed' 'Pacman will win, did you see his K.O of Hatton?' yet 'Mayweather will lose because he runs around ring like a chicken'
These 3 are best quotes heard over past few years.

No not D4 unless your hinting that D4 floods forums and casual fans don't get chance to read anyone else's comments lol

Have noticed that Eubanks junior is slowly gaining a little fan base among people who don't normally follow boxing. Perhaps not a 'fan base' as such, but more of a name than Degale.

That's the benefit of boxing on terrestrial TV, imagine if we had world champions on channels bigger than Ch5 like ITV or BBC
Eubank probably has more fans than most of those on Boxnation

Re: Talking boxing with casuals
Until I really started getting into boxing I was the same as most. Tv and papers tell you someone is great you believe it. It's ridiculous the number of times in recent years I have had to argue against people saying that Tyson would have easily beaten everyone in his pomp. Calzaghe was unbeatable in any era at his weight. Eubank, Benn, Collins were the best their weight has ever seen etc etc.

Re: Talking boxing with casuals
I get the feeling that Boxnation got a big deal with goldenboy ahead of their move into Europe. Boxnation were 2 million in the red over the last period - something that would have serious effect on Warrens pocket. The guy is a shrewd operator and I think he's waiting for Schaefer to make his move so they can consolidate (with Sauerland) a potentially gigantic stable with a giant audience. The Channel usually doesn't make alot of money out of ppv - but a channel owned by the promoters might.
Re: Talking boxing with casuals
The same now with Eubank jnr, I don't bother mentioning that he's never faced decent opposition thus far for fear of sounding bitter or jealous.

Re: Talking boxing with casuals
I know he's not going to be the one to do it but I would like someone of Eubank Jr's ilk to make that cross over and get more of the average fan interested. Call it blind hope if you will but I still see another age of boxing making it big again . Ok not to the place it once held at the sports table. But to be a far greater pawn in the sporting world than it is now

Re: Talking boxing with casuals
Yeah, I used to get that but as I get older it happens less often.
I talk boxing with people at work, or in a pub, and I quickly get their attention with the fact, that I send people to cover boxing shows like Mayweather's last fight or Cotto vs Margarito 2.
They now listen rather than tell me their opinions on the sport.

You just have to ignore all of the "facts" they make that are blatantly wrong.
