v2 G.O.A.T The Wild Card- Nominations
The final 64 entrants into the v2 GOAT awards has been debated heavily amoung the forum since the first group two weeks ago, the mod and admin teams didnt claim to get the list perfect but that they had done their best to ensure that a variety of spors, era's and genders were represented.
Now for some people there are some glaring omissions and with the wild card option we intended to correct at least one of those omissions.
Please nominate a sports man or woman you believe should be considered for round 2, the nomination period will close at 12 noon with the wild card group of the top four nomination competing shortly after. However only the group winner will progress into Round 2 as the wild card.
Nomination below please.

Re: v2 G.O.A.T The Wild Card- Nominations
Two glaring ommissions:
1. Kelly Slater, 11 time World Champion.
2. Birgit Fischer, 27 World championship titles, 8 Gold medals from 6 different olympics.
These two have in my opinion a lot more credit than some of the somewhat mediocre nominations in the first 64.

Shaun White
Franz Klammer/Herman Maier
Alberto Tomba/Jean-Claude Kily

Lester Piggott
Multiple Champion Jockey
Rode his first winner at 14.
Won nine Derby's spread over four decades.
Rode classic race winners up until his 60's
Won all the major races across the globe.
Rode with a unique style and grace.
If Tony McCoy qualified then sorry there is a flaw because as jockeys go Piggott wins hands down for longevity and acheivements.

Re: v2 G.O.A.T The Wild Card- Nominations
The real omissions for me are:
Jahangir Khan (rather than Jansher, whose record was great but not quite unbelievable, as Jahangir's was). Ridiculous unbeaten streak of more than 550 matches, record number of British Open titles - a monumental sportsman.
Mark Spitz (retired young, or would be up with Phelps statistically, in all probability).
Nadia Comaneci (The perfect gymnast, first ever to be awarded a 10, and the star of the 1976 Olympics).
Lester Piggott (Probably the greatest flat jockey in history, unparalleled particularly in the most important races).
Yasuhiro Yamashita (great Japanese judoka, undefeated in more than 200 bouts and Olympic champion - supreme in his sport - like fighting a fridge with a head on top, according to opponents).
Eric Heiden (greatest of all speed skaters - won all 5 distances, from sprint to 10000 metres, at the 1980 Winter Olympics, an achievement unlikely ever to be matched).

Oh, I forgot to add Heather Mackay, Jahangir's female squash equivalent, but even more dominant. Unbeaten for 15 years from the early 60s to her retirement, still champion, in the late 70s. Her retirement was basically due to a lack of suitable challenges, which she remedied by taking up the sport of racketball and destroying all-comers in that as well. A true great.

Hmmm, it'd be tough deciding between Mackay and Susan Devoy who was similarly dominant in the 80s-90s

Come now, Pete, I know you're a New Zealander, but really. Similarly dominant? Less than nine years against 16? 7 British Opens against 16? defeats rare, but sprinkled around that time against Opie and Le Moignan, among others. Mackay simply NEVER lost after 1962, winning every British Open from 62-77 inclusive, usually for the loss of a handful of points, and retiring from the British Open in 77 with an undefeated streak running at nearly 20 years. She finished with squash finally in 1981, having lost two games, at the beginning of her career, EVER. She had also won the World Open of 79 before turning to racketball, which she similarly dominated. Just as an aside, Mackay also represented Australia at hockey.
Devoy was a great, but Mackay was the female equivalent of a colossus.

Ha in what way? Karelins a real person and we're not talking about wrestling as in WWE. He is the GOAT in his own sport which for me is a big thing when assessing a candidate. Is wrestling less of a sport than darts? Phil Taylor made it...

Re: v2 G.O.A.T The Wild Card- Nominations
LeBron James should have been an instant inclusion on this list.
King James is currently the greatest team sportsman in the world - 3 time NBA MVP at the age of only 28. His personal acheivements are so outstanding that the fact that he's also double Olympic Gold medalist is a mere afterthought.
Kurt Angle is an obvious choice - 12 time World Heavyweight Champion, only ever Triple Crown Champion in both the WWE and TNA, King of the Ring and King of the Mountain, one of only 4 men to do the Amateur Wrestling Grand Slam. A legend who won the Olympic Gold Medal with a broken frikkin neck.
Other notable absantees: Manning, Kahn, Spitz, Stenmark.
No more boxers or golfers please.

How is it like that? You're comparing a multiple Olympic Gold medalist to a fictional movie character.
I'm with Paper on this though. I think Karelin should absolutely be included. To be that dominant in a sport where it's so physical and such a widely practiced sport is an incredible achievement.
To be honest some of the people who have made it through so far have done so on popularity not merit. Even if the winner is crowned here there's no enough knowledge of sport by the people voting for there to be a definitive true G.O.A.T.
The fact he hasn't been mentioned let alone added to a poll shows the level we're dealing with here.

A point. Though Devoy retired aged just 28 (to start a family) and held the the Australian, British, French, Hong Kong, Irish, New Zealand, Scottish, Swedish and World open titles at retirement. She won 8 British opens from 8 attempts. The World Open was only held every 2nd year in the 80s/90s but in Devoy's 5 World Opens she lost one match (the 1989 final).
One suspects the field was stonger in the 80's as well.

As I said, Pete, no doubt that Devoy was a great - there's just no comparing her dominance with that of Mackay, who was still beating, into her 40th year, some of the opponents that Sue would come up against at the start of her own career. This is one sport where the number 2 is leagues behind the number one.
