Top 10 Westerns
I'm in a list kind of place so thought I would list my top 10 favourite Westerns:
1. Rio Bravo (just perfect and a film I can watch over and over again. The Duke, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan singing together in the jail is one of my favourite moments in film history). John Carpenter loved it so much he remade it into Assault on Precinct 13 (original version which is criminally underrated).
2. Once Upon a time in the West - so slow but so good and a truly operatic piece of film making by Leone. The soundtrack is beautiful. Henry Fonda plays a baddie. Great film.
3. For a Few Dollars More - another Segio Leone film and the second (and for my money, the best) film in the Dollars trilogy.
4. The Searchers - John Wayne, John Ford, Monument Valley! A stunning Western and for my money Wayne's best role (he should have got the Oscar for this and not for True Grit).
5. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Jimmy Stuart, John Wayne and Lee Marvin. Stuart is brililant in this film playing a good man afraid to confront Lee Marvin's, Liberty Valance.
6. The Good, The Bad, the Ugly - my favourite soundtrack of all time and a tremendously over the top piece of film-making (Leone's third appearance in this list).
7. The Magnificent 7 - a remake of Seven Samurai, great cast, stirring soundtrack and James Coburn plays one of the coolest cowboys ever to appear on screen.
8. The Wild Bunch – Peckinpah – a bunch of old guys realising their time has passed and a whole load of blood!
9. High Plains Drfiter – Clint rides into town (possibly playing the Devil, possibly the ghost of the dead sheriff) and makes the residents paint it red and change its name to Hell.
10. Cat Ballou – Lee Marvin playing both the drunken sheriff and the baddie in an Oscar winning turn. Jane Fonda at her loveliest!
Others to just miss out – A Fistful of Dollars, Red River, the Naked Spur, and Shenandoah (only misses out because I see it as more of a war film).

Some good one's there, Truss. Spaghetti westerns have to be included! Must confess that I haven't seen the Big Silence but will keep an eye out for it.

1. Once Upon a Time in the West
2. The Gunfighter
3. Outlaw Josey Wales - Only fault in what is a wonderful film for 90% is the sudden change of tact in the final stages with the ending and the film suffers for it.

Re: Top 10 Westerns
Hmm. Not a Western expert , so would be uneasy putting out a top ten in order , but
I really rate The Searchers
Unforgiven
Once Upon a time in the West
The Oxbow Incident
Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance
High Noon
and I have a feeling I have forgotten several others which will annoy me ten minutes after I post this...
( Silly side panel for daft send up Westerns ... Enjoyed "Evil Roy Slade"... hey we all have our little weaknesses)

Re: Top 10 Westerns
The good the bad and the ugly is the top western that all other westerns are measured.
DO NOT DISAGREE WITH ME!
It should be number 1 the Once upon a time then the wild bunch.
Any western with John Wayne is just plain rubbish.

I thought about it, Truss but couldn't convince myself that it was a proper Western (there are men wearing stetsons but no horses).
A great film though.

Re: Top 10 Westerns
I need to get more into Westerns. I love films set around that time, Western and Eastern. I know this might not be high on peoples lists of favourites but I love 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

I DISAGREE WITH YOU!
Any western John Wayne made directed by John Ford is a timeless classic.
