Michael Katsidis Retires

Boxer Michael Katsidis set to retire on medical advice
QUEENSLAND's brave former world boxing champion Michael Katsidis has been forced out of his next fight and is likely to announce his retirement on medical advice.
MRI and CAT scans conducted in Sydney have forced Katsidis, 32, from Toowoomba, out of a February 21 fight in Melbourne.
He twice won versions of the world lightweight title and was regarded as one of the most exciting brawlers in boxing.
Katsidis had just switched to a new trainer, Australia's most successful fight mentor Johnny Lewis in Sydney, and had his heart set on becoming Lewis's seventh world champion.
"Michael was crying over this news," a dejected Lewis said.
"It's heartbreaking.
"He wants to speak to his family first before announcing anything but really I'm glad the tests have stopped him fighting before something really bad happened.
"Boxing is a tough sport and it's no good taking chances with your health. Michael is a great bloke with a wife and young daughter and he has so much in his life to be happy about even though this chapter of his boxing career is closing."

All the best Michael! Going to sound like Froch here but you were a true warrior in the ring and go on and enjoy your retirement!

Re: Michael Katsidis Retires
I wish him a very happy retirement.
P4P one of the most exciting and value for money fighters of the last decade.
His style was never suited for a long career and he's settled with a young family so hopefully he'll be content with life after the ring.
All the best.

Good call, one of my all time favourite boxers although was gutted when he beat Mitchell as i was a mitchell fan
Real throwback fighter and always forced you to really earn your win
Marquez took a hell of a lot out of him physically and mentally (remember his brother died before the fight) as he took so many hard clean shots from Marquez and his durabilitiy was finally broken
Fighting Guerrero straight after that was a testament to his will and warrior spirit but he went from one hellacious beating into another. Guerrero painted his face with punches and he somehow managed to survive
He definately has lost it after losing to Mensah convincingly and should he go in with another banger like a Broner or Rios, then his health could really be affected
Good luck to him and hope he can get over this as he's obviously devastated

Well said. Always guaranteed a good fight when he was involved and definitely one of the most exciting fighters in recent times. As you say if he goes up against another heavy hitter you worry how much more he could take.

Can't really add anything to what's been said already; always seemed like a good bloke, brave as they come, superb value for money fighter and probably maximised his potential and went as far as he possibly could in the sport, which is to be commended.
I hope he enjoys retirement and wish him all the best.

Good servant to the sport, hopefully he's earnt enough to be able to settle down nicely with his young family and not have to ever consider health-threatening comebacks. Likeable bloke, successful - sure he'll be able to pick up some punditry work over in Oz.

Re: Michael Katsidis Retires
Good on him.
Its hard for a fighter for it to end so abruptley just ask Hatton but health first. He was an honest pro and can be proud of his work over the years.
A good seasoned pro not like David Haye who is a lying, cheating, conning, excuse making, rodent appearing humanlike creature from the black lagoon.

How did it get from Katsidis retiring to David Haye bashing? OneTwo - is that the name relating to your schizophrenia?

Everyone loved a Katsidis fight - no danger of ever seeing him "not try".
A real fighter's fighter. I wish him well in retirement.

Happy he's called it a day on his own terms, but sad that we'll never get to see the warrior spirit that made him a fan favourite again.

I expect to see him in the ring in the next 6 months. Probably in America where they's give a blind man a gun license.
The likes of Katsidis never really quit.

So pleased he had this scan and retired before causing himself any more damage. True warrior, one of the few. Happy health and retirement!

Wonderful fighter to watch, always gave the fans value for money.
Hope he doesn't come back now, he doesn't owe the sport anything.

He won't be coming back for the sport.
He'll come back because that's all he knows and there's money to be made.

What happens when you fight with your face.......
Fun to watch though........
Fell into the Warren trap of being invited over here and then categorised as a "great" win for Burns........all in the best Warren tradition!!

Good luck to him in whatever he does go onto. Always great to watch and a true warrior. Let's just hope he isn't tempted into a return to fighting so he doesn't follow the trap of so many fighters and end up sounding like Shane Mac Gowan.
