First topic message reminder :

Seems Leinster have signed Jimmy Gopperth as new 10 from Newcastle as Jonny moves to Paris. Have to say know nothing about him and hope Joe Schmidt knows what he's doing. Anybody out there who can fill us in on the guy - is he any good?

It's self explanatory, Pooly. We don't know Newcastle's departing 10, and Europe knows ours

If your that important in Europe...why is he your "departing Fly Half"?? Wink

We're not 'important' at all, Geordie. Not a bit of it, as this season has proven. As our coach and players have always stated.

You have to start at the beginning each season and what you won last season means nothing. We're not cocky. We've taken our weak form this year and lived with it. New dawn, another new year will come, we won't have Sexton - just like we woke one morning and found we didn't have Contepomi, like we woke one morning and found we didn't have Hines, just like we quickly had to forget Rocky.

But Europe knows us and it knows us for a reason. So when we choose to buy a player from Newcastle, there are HEC thoughts going into it - you can bet that much. I'm just wondering what they are. Has Joe spotted something you guys seem not to regard, that's all I'm saying Wink

I'm sure he's noticed that he's a consistent player with a great boot and experienced enough to not make costly mistakes. Making him an ideal backup to a young developing 10 Leinster are hoping will come good.

No point blowing the budget on a top 10 who will leave Madigan getting splinters and equally no point in investing in more potential when you've got plenty already. It's a decent squad move by Leinster. As long as you don't expect another Contepomi you'll be fine.

We don't have room for a back-up childminder though. We really don't.

Outsiders coming in need to be more than squaddies, and assistants. They need to carry their weight, they need to be versatile when Internationals are away, they need to carry the load when those Internationals are away or being rested. They need to be men of their own with the drive to keep results coming.
No, if he's coming, it's not to fill-in the spaces when Madigan comes off, it's to help a player like Nacewa hold the fort when Internationals are away (of which Madigan will possibly be one of them) and then to add real grit and choices to selection for the big days in Europe themselves. We can't afford the luxury of French sides in having filler guys, working lesser shifts. He has to perform in his own right - at the highest level. It'll be expected of him. And I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes and how he's used.

If the rumours are true he will never play a game with Isa. Sad

He is perfect imo. Good attitude. Killer boot. Good tackler. Being a Kiwi he will have good basics. Good at the few things Madigan (and Reid) need(s) to learn. Will close out tight games. Be happy to sit behind Madigan, while giving him enough of a challenge to keep him on his toes.

Will he have enough for a big semi final v Clermont or Toulouse? Will Madigan? These and many other questions answered when we return.........

That's kinda why I said 'like Nacewa'................ being non-committal on that one.

Not a urine take but I don't think he's improveable. He's a kicking machine and can run the ball, but he has no vision, lacks pace and is scared of passing. Play him at 15 and keep your wonder boy at 10 and you'll be fine.

If Clermont can manage with Brock James then you'll be fine with Jimmy OK

The nature and set up of the rabo will suit him better than the English league.

Does this mean Cathal Marsh will get no Rabo time?

He might get a little from the bench. In fairness he is only in first year Academy and was a little short on fitness at the beginning of the season.

B&I and a few Rabo benches is perhaps where he will be at. Any of the 3 OHs ahead of him could get a knock. and 1 of them will likely be in Ireland squads.....
