Wells Fargo Championship
Formerly known as the Quail hollow championship.
The build upto this weeks event ironically see's the defending champion and to many the british darling of golf Rory McIlroy overtake for the first time Tiger Woods in the OGWR, by rising to 6th and Woods slipping to 7th. Woods cannot do anything about his ranking this week as he is out with a Knee injury again, supposedly suffered during round 3 of the masters.
We see Bubba Watson hit new heights by moving into the T10 at 10 and he can now go down in history as doing the insurance slam... Being that he won The Travellers ealier this year and is now hot off the back of the Zurich.
According to reports on the PGA official site World no2 Kaymer goes into this week having made some tweaks to his swing, why is this does he feel he wasn't consistent enough after hitting the heights of World No1 or is he just looking to improve, there's no doubt this has been a slow year so far for the German by the standard he set last year.
This is a relatively new course to the PGA Tour its first appearance back in 2003, so what do we know about Qual Hollow. This tournament is a player favorite and traditionally draws a strong field as done so once again this year. The players will be challenged by the 7,422-yard par 72 layout that was originally designed by George Cobb in 1961. The course saw a redesign by Tom Fazio in 1996.
To play well at the Quail Hollow Club, you need to drive the ball well. This is exactly what Sean O'Hair did en route to his victory in 2009. O'Hair was seventh in driving distance (316.6 yards) and 19th in driving accuracy (51.8%), which set him up to score with his approach irons. The PGA TOUR tracks a statistic called Total Driving. Total Driving combines driving distance and accuracy to rank players based on overall ability to drive the golf ball. It would not be a surprise to see a player in the top 10 of this category contending come Sunday afternoon. One such player to watch is Boo Weekley -- he's coming off two solid weeks after finishing T12 at Verizon Heritage and T10 at Zurich Classic of New Orleans
One interesting fact is Qual Hollow has only 1 recorded hole in 1 in tournament play by Jay Williamson in 2008, other favourites for this week has to be the likes of Dustin Johnson, Big Phil and Bubba, all can put it out there but are not the most consistent, I cant see Rory having a big week, so this coul dbe another first time winner again, my money is on a Sean O'Hair T10 and maybe an outsider on Tommy (UnGainly) Gainey it's not pretty but seems very effective so far this year

Good stuff Mav.
Was it david toms who took about an 8 on the final hole and still won here once, or was that somewhere else?
What about Furyk, he played ok last week and is a former winner?

Not sure about the Toms incident without delving deeper into my archives, but it does ring a bell with this event I think.
Furyk's form this year has been patchy at best which is my reasoning behing the oversight of him as a potential 2011 winner, but if Jom can find his ball striking which has been a little lacking this year any course that promotes positional play such as this will suit him much like Luuuuke.

Re: Wells Fargo Championship
Tough one to call this week. No one really standing out to my eye. The likes of Fowler and Kaymer are due a big one but I 'm not rushing to put my hard earned cash on them. Casey and Justin come into a similar category.
Could be a good week for an outside punt on Two Gloves or perhaps the darling of old 606, Marvin Logie Baird

Agree it's a tough one to call, if it's not one of the cack handers then maybe Sergio to return to the winners circle?

Good post Mav. Gainey is knocking on the door. DJ is just back from Korea so he is probably jetlagged. Rory would give his best, exciting to see what he can do. Hope he's not going house hunting....

I'd love Bubba to go back to back. The guy is brilliant to watch and so down to Earth

Ewen Murray just mentioned that it was indeed Quail Hollow in 2003.

They're all trying to give it away over the closing holes. And Paddy's going for another dq, this time for the rabbit's favourite faux pas, teeing off in front of the markers.

Harrington got away with it, Glover and Byrd now pretty much the only 2 left in it. Great 4 by Byrd at 16 after a terrible tee shot, but they've both got tricky up and downs, Byrd at 17 and Glover at 18 after a bit of a break from a poor tee shot.

Brilliant birdie on the last by Byrd to force a playoff.

Re: Wells Fargo Championship
Par on the first playoff hole good enough for Glover. And I bought a set of the VR Pro Combo irons he uses today so hopefully that bodes well for my game too!

Re: Wells Fargo Championship
Glover played fantastically consistent all week and proof that when his heads in the game he's a top player. Also interesting to see playoff with 2 players that don't wear a glove and also 2 guys that went to college together and played on the same college team
