Soundtracks that hit you!
For me its Last tango in Paris starring Marlon Brando
Soundtrack by Gato Barbieri.
Don't know why this particular song gets to me but it does its so French. Anyone who has been to Paris would understand. I used to go there quite a lot as a kid. Also the film is based in seventies Paris and I have an emotional connection with that decade for some reason. The film is quite disturbing tbh. Did not understand what it was all about when I first saw it as a kid but having recently sat down to watch it as an adult it strikes me as well r***.
Not the greatest movie I have seen and not one you can watch over and over again but the elements are all there for me. The seventies, the clothes, the music. Whenever I hear it or remember the film it resonates with me.

Paris, Texas. Ry Cooder and a slide guitar. Perfect accompaniment to a haunting and affecting film.
Most things by Ennio Morricone- The Good, The Bad, The Ugly is a great soundtrack, as is The Mission.

I love Enio Morricones score for the Untouchables.
I also think that Moulin Rouge has a deserving sondtrack - completely sweeps you up in the visuals.
Final mention is to Murray Gold who does a lot of work on Doctor Who - the London orchestral pieces at the Albert Hall are immense:

Re: Soundtracks that hit you!
I generally dislike soundtracks (apart from musicals obviously) as I don't really like being told what mood I'm supposed to feel but my 2 favourites are:
A Clockwork Orange - just genius, especially the Beethoven rearrangements by W Carlos
Last Exit To Brooklyn - mournful, haunting theme repeated throughout
2 of my worst are Highlander, contemporary music just didn't work & The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, loud and invasive, ruined the film for me.

When you mentioned Highlander, it got me thinking of Queens brilliant soundtrack to Flash Gordon.
Very underated piece of work.

Leone's Trilogy - all of them equally. Just a tour de force in music composed to create a totally new aural landscape for what was a traditional genre
Blade Runner - I can undertand why people who've grown up on rapid editing and fast multifacetted storylines finding it boring. I think it's Ridley Scott's ONLY perfect movie - a masterpiece.
Betty Blue - haunting spare piano
Days of Heaven
American Graffiti - the beginnings of rock sounding through car radios as young guys cruise through their hometown streets before moving off to college. Nostalgia for a time you never lived in.
One Million Years BC - a distinctive sound for a distinctive fur pelted movie
Zulu - Welsh baritones versus Zulu chants and shield beating. Great stuff all through.

Re: Soundtracks that hit you!
Was recently having a conversation about John Williams, marvelling at his ability to kick out classic cues and entire soundtracks at will at the height of his powers. Jaws, ET, Raiders, Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park etc. Amazing.
Also thinking of orchestral soundtracks, The Rocketeer is pretty special (James Horner), although it strangely became overused on trailers for other movies.
Favourite soundtrack of songs for me is probably when Harry Met Sally (Harry Connick Jr performing some outstanding arrangements of jazz standards). I will admit to having the Top Gun soundtrack included on a CD of car music as well though. Whatever happened to those mega-hit movie tie-in singles??? There used to be loads in the 80s and 90s!

@secretfly American Graffiti's soundtrack is utterly brilliant, especially with the radio commentary from Wolfman Jack.

I love Trevor Jones' orchestral score from Last of the Mohicans. So much so that me and Mrs Windows had one piece of music from the score playing whilst we signed the marriage register at our wedding.
Moving and stirring soundtrack throughout.

The Who's soundtrack to Quadrophenia is a belter, does not particularly fit with the era the film is about or what mods were actually listening to on the whole but still some cracking songs.
Probably not the thing to admit as a boxing fan on a pretty much wholly male forum but the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack is a cracker as well.

The soundtrack to Inception is one of my favourites.
I think Steve Jablonsky is very underrated. Despite the film, the soundtrack to Transformers is fantastic.

Although the film sucked @ss, Sucker Punch has an amazing soundtrack. Reminded me of Tangerine Dream in parts but more modern.
Talking of which, some of Tangerine Dreams soundtracks have been great - Dawn of the Dead was very good (although I think it was by soundalikes Goblin)

I nearly mentioned Hans Zimmer in my earlier post - thinking mostly of Gladiator (which from memory involves a battle theme in waltz time?!?) and Nolan's Batman trilogy, albeit noting that the first two were in collaboration with James Newton Howard. However, I'd then feel obliged to talk about Danny Elfman's score on Batman (1989)... etc etc.

The Beach Soundtrack is very good despite the crappy film, also felt that the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack very much complimented the film.

Adam D wrote:Zimmer on True Romance is brilliant too.
Apologies for being pedantic as I have mentioned this on another thread but the True Romance theme is only rearranged by Zimmer, it's pretty much the music from Badlands which was composed by Orff (who is also responsible for Carmina Burana). The story of Badlands is not dissimilar to True Romance so I would assume it was used as a tribute.
Do like the Zimmer version though.

The two soundtracks that get me every time are The Godfather and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (specifically the music played during the final stand-off).
Other than that, the soundtrack to 24 Hour Party People is great as is Control, also a few decent songs on Goodfellas and Casino.

Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the ring - That track by Enya was fantastic!
John Williams - Every single sound track (Star Wars all the way)
John Barry - Every single sound track (Out of Africa is my fav)
Band of Brothers has a great sound track
The Life Aquatic - Loads of David Bowie and some sigur ros, that would be my favourite soundtrack.
Music is extremely important in film. A good, original sound track can turn an average film into something much better. Likewise a bad one can ruin what could have been a great film.
I think someone mentioned the Beach above. That wasn't the best film but the music was great and very memorable. Moby when they first see the beach, very good choice in my view.
I also love The Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack, probably my second favourite movie soundtrack, written by Gustavo Santaolalla who did Brokeback Mountain.
Trent Reznor also did a very intense soundtrack for the Social Network, worked very well I thought.

Oh Forest Gump had a few gem moments in it.. Free Bird - before Jenny nearly commits suicide.
Boogie nights is another good one if I remember correctly and Scarface has a very intense 80's feeling groove to it. Most annoying song in that club before attempt to assassinate Tony, but so catchy!

"Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
"The Morning After" from the Poseidon Adventure by Maureen McGovern
"We May Never Love Like This Again" from the Towering Inferno also by McGovern
I always thought Raindrops sounded so out of place given the context of the film (60s music in the 1890s or whatever) but that's what makes it interesting - and I think it worked really well.
Those last two are kind of eerie considering what's about to happen. Nice mushy 70s pop songs too.
