Donaire looks lost of ideas up to this point.

Just had to turn off the commentary - Donaire didn't throw a punch and apparently he missed with a left hook?

Donaire needs a KO or some knock downs on my card. Hes coming forward but not throwing enough and missing when he does. Inneffective aggression.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
Deserved win imo, I had it 114-113 I think to Rigo
Donaire shouldn't have abandoned the right to the body as it was the first right to the body that hurt Rigo in the 10th before he got knocked down

I think Donaire could have done a bit more, easy for me to say but I felt he could have backed his chin a bit more and tried to break Rigo's defence, a lot of time spent throwing nothing

I did state that Rigo would box his head off, and I think in some ways I was proved right tonight. Didn't expect it to be that easy though to be honest. Hardly ever got touched and donaires face at the end was a bit of a mess.
Decent fight.
Emore will be loving it in the morning.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
Nonito is very humble in defeat, accepts Rigo made him look bad - says he needed shoulder surgery, not to take away from Rigo but he's said it affected him.
Rigo just basically said "you can't win with one punch at the top level" which is true in some respects but he just wanted to make out he was by far the better boxer. Negative? yes. Effective? Yes. Reminds me of Klitschko in terms of anything comes his way, he gets the hell out of there.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
I had that very very close, no idea how the commentary team had it so wide. Big 12th for Rigo who showed what he could do and that he was the more talented of the 2 fighters but he made hard work of a fight with his lack of activity. Gutted for Donaire (who I have a bit of a man crush on) as he is the nicest guy in boxing and fell right into Rigo's fight. My god what a special talent Rigo is though.

Not sure about that Donaire was having massive problems seeing because of a left that scraped his eye in the 12.
Rigo is brilliant but he most certainly hasn't made me a fan. An elite level Junior Witter.

That was a flush punch right on the eye, thought it was a thumb at first but the replay showed it landing sweet, never seen Donaire back pedal like he did in that 12th round.
Rigo is just a ridiculous talent but his negative style is very hard to watch.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
AWFUL fight, right up there with Hopkins v Calzaghe
Rigo spent the whole fight running away whilst Donaire followed after him but refused to let his hands go.
Actually scored it 114-113 for Donaire but perhaps on reflection I just wanted him tow win because Rigo was just so damn negative, can't imagine too many people paying to watch him, I wouldn't step in out of the rain!

He did though, threw fewer punches than Hopkins generally does, & yes I am a football fan but I'm also a very keen boxing fan - I didn't realise that I clouldn't be both - sorry.

116-112 Rigo, while not spectacular he boxed well, his footwork was excellent and he landed more punches. He fought exactly the fight that he had to, to take the win.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
I watched it yesterday night and had it 116-113 Rigo. Bet you a few people ate some humble pie! Unlike a few I actually enjoyed the fight. Its was a great performance by Rigo, one that only the purists can appreciate. What I was impressed the most with was Rigo's handspeed. I actually thought Donaire would win due to his superior handspeed but Rigo seem to be just as fast if not quicker. That straight left he throws has lots of speed and venom behind, even after 12 rounds, when I though Donaire would go in for the kill, one clean straight left from Rigo had him backpedalling for the rest of the round basically ending Donaire’s chances of a victory. Rigo is a special talent who has just schooled a top 5 p4p fighter in his prime. We should appreciate this fella while he's still around.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
As Wingy said, anyone who actually 'knows' boxing, any purist, any true lover of the art of the sport would/should have enjoyed that fight. It was beautiful. Rigo's foot movement was jaw dropping.
The art of boxing is to hit without getting hit, and that was a boxing masterclass. Those accusing Rigo of running and not engaging enough are the same sort of people that wouldn't rate Sweet Pea.

Re: Anyone still awake for Rigondeaux vs Donaire?
Well if a guy who likes rambling into a camera and posting it on youtube says so it must be true!
You can appreciate skill and technique without wanting to choke the chicken over a fight that has so little action.
I don't Actually blame rigo, he wanted to draw leads and donaire didn't want to throw them. Just made it cat and mouse. As someone said previously it was actually rigo that initiated more exchanges. Just think most people watching would have preferred him to do it more often. But he was winning the fight, so the onus was on donaire to change things... and he couldn't/wouldn't.
From rigo's perspective, I'm sure he wants glory and money. He fought the perfect fight for donaire, but won't have helped his marketability. Had he gone to war and lost he'd probably have won more fans. Being extremely good is often worse for the bank balance than being limited but exciting. They need to pick his next few opponents carefully. He's no spring chicken and needs the big fights coming thick and fast, but it's a fact of life that they'll need to offer more action than this one, if they want to sell tickets.

Don't get me wrong, Gatti-Ward is/was a more exciting spectacle. But that doesn't mean it's a better boxing match.
Given he spent most of his career as a top world amateur, I get the impression he's more concerned with going doing as a great than earning a few extra bucks.
Be great and rich beyond your wildest dreams, or be even richer but look like you couldn't transfer your amateur pedigree to the pro ranks. I know which I'd choose.

I don't know the reason for his defection, tophat, i'm sure he was a hero in cuba, but it 's a communist country. I doubt he escaped with a swag bag that was overflowing. Maybe he wanted to try life in the 'west', maybe he wanted to show the world he could deliver as a pro. Maybe he just wanted money.
I think as fans, we always like to think that pro's are after the glory. It's going to change fighter to fighter, but I imagine for most its balancing their dream with economic reality.
