The also rans
Wanting to move away from historical fights/fighters and the marque names out there, and take look at some less stellar names that currently ply thier trade in the ring.
Who do people enjoy watching, but know they are never going to be headlining the like of the MGM & MSG etc?
I like to watch Gary Buckland, solid puncher who can take a good shot but lacks the skill and finesse to really push on past European level.

Re: The also rans
Always enjoyed watching Jamie Moore, a little short of being able to mix at the top tier but rarely in a bad fight, frequently in absolute belters and seems one of the sports good guys as well. The same description could as readily be applied to Carl Thompson as well who I have similar respect for.

When I came here I loved watching Thaxton, Ryan, Farnell types.....when back home loved Brit guys like Sibson that always put on a show.........Loved his fight with Don Lee....classic..
Growing up enjoyed Brazier, Duarte, Davila, Laporte, Hatcher, Sandoval, Red Lopez, Bejines, Arroyo, Drayton............
Now well I kind of enjoy Bellew mostly..

Gary Buckland is a great shout Jack. Always enjoy watching him fight also!
Gavin Rees is another, although after his effort against Broner he may well end up having a handful of fights in the US (in MSG at least) on an undercard or something. Max Kellerman and the HBO boys seemed to praise him a lot. So it would be possible that they would consider televising him in future.

Re: The also rans
Why should Rees have a market in America just for being an entertaining punching bag???

Re: The also rans
That is a good point, but the promoters need someone for their stars to beat up. Why not Rees??
Re: The also rans
And also, whos to say he will be a punchbag??
Against the right fighter, he might pull off a decent win. He has a crowd pleasing style.
Can see him on one of DiBella's cards, seeing as him and Hearn have a decent relationship.
Hes only been beat twice in about 40 fights. Hardly punchbag material

gary sykes is a entertaining fighter, and always up for a challenge. he had a shot against broner that fell through, which was lucky for him.

Re: The also rans
He might not get many travelling fans, but like reebok says, could be used as someone to give a prospect 12 rds against someone who isnt going to knock them out, but will provide a little pressure

Re: The also rans
Jason Booth, for me (calling him an 'also ran' is a bit harsh, but you get my drift). A local lad of course, which helps, but always had a great, chirpy attitude to the sport, has done a lot for 'grass roots' boxing in and around Nottingham, always appreciative to the perks boxing has given him and has also been involved in some excellent fights - no dog in him, for sure.
It's been a wee bit gutting for me to see him served up as an experience builder for guys like Quigg and Galahad in the past couple of years.

Re: The also rans
Please read the part were I said about putting him on an undercard Truss...the main event will put the bums on seats. If people see Rees on HBO having a few wars then at least they know the undercard might be a little entertaining. Whats so hard to believe about that??
You're forgetting that John Duddy & Andy Lee used to feature on undercards in the US at one point.

Yea because the British title is like winning the lottery...........that should set him up for life.
Re: The also rans
And?? He fought in Texas, Florida etc
I forgot about the crazy Irish who took over them parts!
Again, put Rees on undercards in the US and he will be more known.
Have him fighting in Doncaster Leisure centre?? Hes already been there and done that......stilly statement, he is in his 30s and won every domestic honour.
He deserves to have a go at the US. But hey, never mind about wanting to fight the best, they should all follow your advice and stick to fighting for minor belts.

Re: The also rans
And?
Massachusetts? Illinois? Florida? Connecticut?
And even when he started off on undercards in New York, the whole of the Irish American community knew him??
He made a name for himself just like any fighter with an agressive style can do if they get the chance to fight on HBO.
Rees was praised by Kellerman etc after the fight.
He was in a win/win situation as long as he showed balls. He did, he got stopped like most Broner opponents. But he also caught him more than a lot of the previous opponents of his.
I still don't understand why you would want someone who has just put up a brave showing on a main card on HBO to go back to Donny Leisure centre to fight for a few grand every few months.

True, he may become one, but that could happen over here or over there.
Point being, people over there know who he is now due to fighting Broner............people over here still barely know him.

Re: The also rans
I loved watching Fernando Vargas who was never really in a dull fight. That said though, he was a 2-time champ (although not top-drawer) so probably not valid in this case.
Wayne Alexander always was fun to watch as he had a hell of dig on him. I remember when he scared the hell out of Harry Simon on 24 hours' notice.
Michael Brodie was also good to watch.

Re: The also rans
Very true Truss, have seen some stinkers decision wise but that was up there with the worst. Shameful that a decision like that could have been the difference for someone like Brodie being able to retire with his mortgage paid off.
Good call on Alexander Bounce, his fight with Samuels was a domestic Hagler Hearns and his knockout of Takaloo has to rank as one of the most chilling ever.
