Re: Civic parade on tuesday
Route and times of Norwich City promotion parade revealed
Full details have been revealed of Norwich City’s promotion parade, including the route the Canaries stars will take in their the open-topped bus.
The Canaries clinched promotion to the Premier League on Monday after a 1-0 win away at Portsmouth, returning to the top flight of English football for the first time in six years.
Fans clamoured for a parade to salute Paul Lambert’s triumphant team and on Wednesday it was announced there would be a civic reception on Tuesday (May 10).
Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of Norwich for the celebration, just a year after hailing the Canaries’ promotion as champions of League One.
Just as when Norwich City won promotion to the Premier League in 2004, the manager and players will attend a civic reception at City Hall and will appear on the balcony to share their success with the Canaries faithful.
Following the reception, hosted by Norwich City Council and the football club, and sponsored by Aviva, they will then parade through the city in an open-topped bus.
Around 350 people, including Norwich City board members, coaching staff and players, civic dignitaries and other invited guests will attend the civic reception.
Norwich City officials and players will appear on the balcony from which speeches and interviews will be given between approximately 6pm and 6.45pm.
Paul Lambert and his promotion-winning squad will then board an open-topped bus at around 7pm and parade through the city to give as many people as possible a chance to see them.
Setting out in Theatre Street, the specially-branded double-decker bus will travel along Rampant Horse Street and Red Lion Street, before completing its tour at the far end of Castle Meadow at its junction with Bank Plain.
Laura McGillivray, chief executive of Norwich City Council, said: “We had amazing scenes of jubilation in the streets last year after the cub won promotion from League One and so we expect thousands more people to celebrate promotion to the Premier League.
“This is all about us congratulating the football club and giving everyone a chance to come out and celebrating something that is amazing news for the whole of Norwich.”
Superintendent Paul Sanford, from Norfolk police, said: “Thousands of people are expected to line the streets from Theatre Street to Castle Meadow to cheer on the Canaries.
“We will have a mix of regular police officers and members of the Special Constabulary on duty to assist with the policing of the event and to ensure the safety of the public at all times.”
