Best film from the 80s - Round 4 of the Movie Cup
First topic message reminder :
Vote for your favourite 2 - voting ends on Monday.
Everyone allowed to vote in this, not just the people who nominated.
Below are the reasons for nominations (where provided).
Next week is films based on a comic book or comic book character:
Stand by Me - one of the few Stephen King stories to make a successful transfer to screen, this is one of those films I can watch again and again. Great build-up & unsentimental climax, you'd have to be a bit disturbed not to be wracked with nostalgia.
The Empire strikes back - The first sequel to outstrip an original. A critically acclaimed success and action packed from start to finish.
ET - Possibly the greatest film of all time and not just the 80s. A story which still carries an emotional wallop even today. Brilliant acting and story from the greatest director of his generation. This has to win!
Die Hard - Who could forget this amazing film with hard hitter John McClain(Bruce wills fantastic performance) and the amazing ride which was "Yippee Kiy Yay"
Airplane - It's just clearly the best comedy film of all time. It launched a new era of spoof comedies and sight gags, for which I am eternally grateful. Even people who haven't seen it know quotes from it. It transcended!
Blade Runner - A Sci-Fi classic film that manages to equal the book it was based on, the outstanding Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Exceptional acting and direction throughout but the key features here were the existential questions asked through the plot and characters and the sublime way Scott subtly makes suggestions regarding the nature of identity. A massive influence on works in every conceivable medium.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - a film that needs no introduction or case made for it - it simply is one of the best films ever made, never mind from the 80s. There has never been a better feel-good movie than Ferris Bueller.
The Terminator - The Terminator made the reputation of cowriter/director James Cameron and solidified the stardom of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie begins in a post-apocalyptic 2029, when Los Angeles has been largely reduced to rubble and is under the thumb of all-powerful ruling machines. Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), a member of the human resistance movement, is teleported back to 1984. His purpose: to rescue Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the mother of the man who will lead the 21st-century rebels against the tyrannical machines, from being assassinated before she can give birth. Likewise thrust back to 1984 is The Terminator (Schwarzenegger), a grim, well-armed, virtually indestructable cyborg who has been programmed to eliminate Sarah Connor. This is the film in which Schwarzenegger declared "I'll be baaaack"
Back To The Future - A time travelling masterpiece. Michael J Fox's best film. Who didn't want to own a DeLorean?? One of those films that gets quoted even now.
The Goonies - Hey yoooooooooouuuu guyyyyyssss vote for this! This film defines life as a child growing up in the 80s, hanging out with your friends on bmxs, playing out & exploring, finding physically and mentally handicapped members of criminal gangs whilst searching for underground pirate treasure to stop you being relocated, we've all been there. So if you want to do the truffle shuffle one more time vote for this!

Gone Blade Runner for it's craftmanship and Raiders for its unassailable sense of adventure. Never bought into ET, think it's lost on my generation and has aged poorly?

FBDO is my clear winner, follows by Stand by Me.

Ahh I'd forgotten about Trading Places! I love that film, the characters of Mortimer and Randolph was inspired casting.
Quiz question - Which other film did Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy appear as Randolph & Mortimer Duke?

Ah, but if you like any film I think is boring, then obviously you're into that 'boring' culture
In other words, a film isn't boring just because you say so - it's only boring to you.

Re: Best film from the 80s - Round 4 of the Movie Cup
All I can say is back to future for myself in my age group was about as boring as driving an F1 car ..
The scripting was seamless, The film just flows so well. And this is 100% family film. These films dont seem to exist anymore.. To make a film without adding the odd t!t, swear word or gore yet still entertain the masses is kinda tough!
Infact the film has even created culture.. From flipping the skateboard to the way we look at deluriums!
It was part of the magic of growing up. And many can still appriciate it today..
It has a very good score on IMDB and to be honest it deserves it. Its a great american film- they normally need the help form a lot of brits to do that these days.. So fair play to them

I'd like to know what this special 'culture' is that aucklandlaurie was referring to. What's BTTF's 'culture' that I've supposedly missed? Skateboarding and ugly cars? Is that it?
In my opinion, the script is terrible, the acting over the top, not much actually happens in it. It's a trial watching it. The last film is much better, but the first two were really tedious for me.

Really. Most people are the other way around.. But hey nothing wrong with being different pal!!
I can accept that people like all the other films listed. Its popular culture. Die hard for instance makes me personally wanna puke.. But hey ho!

Classic film. Live hogs against pork belly.....the dead spread. Brilliant.
I went for Stand By Me and The Goonies simply because they are ingrained on my childhood memories.
I wanted to be either Chris Chambers from Stand By Me (which the older I get, the more I appreciate for different reasons) or just be a Goonie. Any one of them would do. Even Chunk.

Possibly. But action films are the lowest common denominator of films. Of all the films on this list, I think it comes somewhere near the bottom. How people think it's better than Empire Strikes Back I'll never know.

I'm with you on this Crimey - think Die Hard is absolute rubbish. I generally can't stand action films or Bruce Willis, lcd of actor in the lcd of film. & the Yippee Ki Yay MF catchphrase has to be one of the worst ever, makes some of Arnie's seem intelligent.
& I'm doubly annoyed because it's miles ahead of my choice in the poll.
