Controversial Film Views
Ok this is the thread to post your controversial film views. You know the ones that make nearly everyone look at you in shock and disbelief. Things such as:
"I never really liked this classic film"
"I actually preferred the sequel / remake over the original"
"I always liked that film even though everyone else seemed to hate it"
I will get the ball rolling: I actually think Deep Blue Sea is a better film than Jaws...

There's a difference between "controversial" and "scandalous".

I think Keanu Reeves is a better actor than Brando. I think Police Academy six is funnier than Airplane. I think Seagal should have won the best oscar actor for Hard To Kill. I think the Italian Job remake is better than the original. I think the last three Star wars films are better than the first three.
(I didn't want to be left out)

Re: Controversial Film Views
At the risk of upsetting Rowley (again!), my own controversial film view has always been that The Godfather is fairly overrated by the masses. Good film, don't get me wrong, but I've never quite figured out how it's become quite so revered.

Not sure if this is controversial but the Lord of the Rings Trilogy bored me to tears, over long and very dull.

De-Niro is overrated as an actor, as is Eastwood as a director.

The chainsaw massacre
------------------------------
A cheaply made, boring, poorly acted movie.....devoid of any interesting characters that gets cult status just because of the chainsaw and the mask of flesh............
Bladerunner
----------------
Incomprehensibly tepid movie that relies on visuals and a stirring soundtrack to hide it's shallow plot and uninteresting characters............
Hollow and mainly dull...........liked by many because because it's hip to like it!!!!!!!!!

Will Ferrell is not that funny and has only made 1 good film, Elf.
Vince Vaughan is not funny at all.
The Shawshank Redemption is cack.
Christopher Nolan's Batman series is not the be all and end all that some people make out. Some folk think they are the greatest things ever put on film. They're not.
Tom Cruise can't act.
Angelina Jolie is definitely not that attractive.
Vince Vaughan is not funny at all.

Disagree about Shawshank (excellent film, with two of the best acting performances of the last 20 years), but the only other thing I'd disagree with is the suggestion that Will Ferrell has ever been funny.

I know you're trying to get bites Beefcake but even by your standards that is a monumentally stupid post.
There are masses of great films that are subtitled. You should try one or two. City of God or City of Life and Death would be a start.
Although you being a rather simple American, you almost certainly can't cope with reading and watching at the same time.

I agree with that, I don't really see the appeal of the genre. Also they often have those stupid advertising lines like "You won't sleep tonight/for weeks" surely that's just a warning to not bother seeing it?gazzyD wrote:On the whole the horror genre is also rubbish

Yes but I've seen subtitled films a plenty especially in the horror genre....... enough to generalise..
You guys hate horror movies, don't watch them, and know all about them...
"You won't sleep tonight"....Please tell me the horror movies you're referring to with that tagline..

Re: Controversial Film Views
And I've sat through enough horror films to know that I dislike them it's just my opinion (which I gave without insulting everybody who does like them) and I never claimed to know all about horror films. I'll try to remember the specific one but I'll admit that was a generalisation based upon probably one or two trailers, hopefully you are able to understand that as I'm not a fan of the genre I don't have a perfect knowledge of every films taglines...TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Yes but I've seen subtitled films a plenty especially in the horror genre....... enough to generalise..

Well after a quick search I'll admit it wasn't the film I thought of though a Nightmare on Elm Street film did have something very similiar 'Never Sleep Again', anyway it's time for me to go to sleep I'll leave you to continue allowing one rule for yourself and one for everybody else.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:"You won't sleep tonight"....Please tell me the horror movies you're referring to with that tagline..

Re: Controversial Film Views
My reasons for not liking horror are pretty straight forward
With regards to those that fall in the slasher category, I don't particularly find it very entertaining watching people get murdered in a variety of ways.
As for the other horrors were things go bump in the night it's all been done before, the jump scenes are all tried and tested techniques that you can see a mile off, and now because of the advertising that go into a movies release, half the scare moments are in the trailer so you're expecting them anyway
I'm not gonna bash people who like them, it's each to their own, they're just not my cup of tea

I think Tom Cruise is a pretty good actor TBH. Sure he's been typecast a lot recently, but in the past he's played quite a range of different roles and mostly been good. Tom Cruise's personal views of course I have no time for.
I still think Alien 3 is the best Alien film.

Sums him up pretty accurately, he's been good or, at the very least, adequate in every film I've seen him in (especially Magnolia & Born on the Fourth of July). Unfortunately, he has a habit of choosing unchallenging roles in blockbusters. Agree about his personal views, he gives me the creeps.

I am actually pretty close to agreeing with you on that, Mike. Alien just edges it for me but Alien 3 is a seriously good film that doesn't get enough consideration. It is dark and genuinely claustrophobic like the original and it has some excellent characters in it, particularly Dillon who is played brilliantly by Charles S. Dutton. Superb performance of menace and likeability in almost equal measures.
Aliens has some good performances (Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen) and one or two iconic scenes but is essentially just a space based shoot em up and could have been so much more.
The less said about Resurrection the better.

His character is far more subtle that than. His desire to repent is pretty easy to spot and his selfless act at the end is a great scene. He got the peace he was looking for and gave Ripley a shot at surviving. What is not to like about that.
So what if the director didn't like it. I didn't sit on his lap and watch it. I watched it myself and formed my own opinion. Perhaps you need babysitting through films but I don't.
