Ah yeah, the play off. Be nice to give England another drubbing. BTW as it stands I don't think we'll be successful in defending our world cup...

Why does Ireland not have a sevens team?
Seems odd that the likes of portugal, kenya and Russia are represented in the series but Ireland is not.
Don't think Japan and Italy have a team either.

Ireland only have 4 teams and they already have two international teams. I suppose they don't have enough players. They entered a team into the series a few years ago but didn't do too well.

But Scotland manage to put out a team and welsh team is mainly semi pro players and under 20s so don't think lack of players is an issue.

We have had some notable success from players taking part in the sevens team. Hook, Cuthbert, and lads like Owen Williams who will soon be a big name.

I suppose funding (or lack of) could be the main issue then. You're right about the Welsh players, but the ones involved are considered Sevens specialists. This squad however has a few more full timers and you can see the difference.

It was 10 seasons ago that Ireland last fielded a 7s team. Their last tournament was at George in SA, then the second tourny in the series schedule.

Stuart McInally, Hamish Watson, Tim Visser, Dougie Fife get these guys in next week no point of them sitting around doing nothing, not being in the core teams when where hosting the commonwealth games will be a media disaster for the SRU and most likely a loss of funding from sport Scotland.
Theyve probably all gone on their monthly holidays to the other side of the world.
Yep, by the sounds of it Visser's beatled off to Spain. Suppose he was in need of a break, it's been like a whole weeks since he (and judging by the photos a lot of the other Edinburgh players) was larking about in Holland...
He was in dubai about 2 weeks before that aswell.
ahhh, what a lifestyle
Re: Glasgow 7's
Enjoyed the Wales vs NZ game. Wales gave it a bloody good go, but dropped off a bit 2nd half. Good effort though!
Russia did well against France too, came close to snatching it.
Australia did well too, for such a young side they're playing alright.

England pick out Price to take 3rd place. He seems too much of a lumberjack for Sevens, he's been blowing all afternoon. Wales get close to glory but fail again.

Paul John's half time team talks are a bit vague too. There's never any tactical advice. Just statements such as 'no errors', 'only 7 minutes to go' etc.

Re: Glasgow 7's
The England v Wales game was a very close game i thought. Wales have some good players coming through there.
New Zealand v South Africa was an absolute great game and a very weel good win for SA.
New Zealand seem too have alott of injured players, but take nothing away from SA they was great.

I wouldn't call third place 'glory'.

They were pipped to the final, not just the third place finish. They were also just pipped in a previous final by Fiji. That's what I was getting at.

Sure Saint, I'm just having a laff really. Wales have a good 7s squad this season. 6th in the rankings, and just ahead of France and England.

Yeah that's not a bad position to be in.The Sevens squad in the latter half of the season had more professional players who are usually on the fringe of the first team squad at a regional team. Without full time Sevens player we probably won't progress.

This has been a very inconsistent season for the Blitzbokke, they missed out on as many tournaments as they have won, winning three cup finals all against NZ but then also failing to make the QF at some tournaments is very concerning, in the beginning of the season we were nothing without Cecil Africa and a few of our other stars and then this tournament we eventually win one without them

Re: Glasgow 7's
I've been to the Dubai 7s for nine years on the trot. Missed this season's tourny because a new work system was due to be introduced at the beginning of December. All leave was cancelled and recinded.
Then it was put back to February, but too late to go for me
Ruby, every day's a Bank Holiday now. I took early retirement just before Christmas Loving it.
But enough of that. A Welsh player who has been a stalwart of your 7s team for a few years has been Ifan Evans. A tank of a winger.

Early retirement I was just enjoying the bank holiday - there you go - enjoy it; I would - Corey is the young lad that will be in the welsh reckoning over the next 12-18 months, an absolute monster of a centre with great skills - I'm teeing off at 9 30 tomorrow so it can't be too bad

Time to call it a day SRU - too much being wasted on a plainly failing 7s set up. Leave it to the clubs and get Colin Gregor back in a Warriors shirt.

Re: Glasgow 7's
The thing I don't get is that the current squad are mainly now full time 7s players - we did much better in the past when we threw random pro players into 7s tournaments!
For full time 7s players their basic skills are very poor.

While NZ only won 1 tournament, but were otherwise generally there or thereabouts to take the title. They left DJ Forbes and a few other regulars out of Glasgow though, aiming to have them fit for the 7WC. Single-tournament results have seemed more variable this season (qui, which suggests the Olympics could be quite interesting come 2016.

I think NZ were never lower than third this whole season. That is as consistent as it comes.
