Has Del Potro got mono? Hope not...
He withdrew from Portugal and now Madrid due to a virus he's no so far recovered from...

Probably nothing to worry about but it's been dragging on a while now.

Oh boy, this would be another big loss to the tour, not to mention a personal disaster for the big guy.
Hoping he's ok.

Likewise, he really pushed himself hard at IW, when players are exhausted and then travel a lot they're sitting ducks for all kinds of viruses.

Yikes. Here's hoping that he recovers swiftly, but it does look a bit grim. Has he officially withdrawn from Madrid?

In recent years there has been a mono epidemic on the tour we lost Ancic and it seems Soderling, Federer had to fight through it in 08 and remarkably managed to finish in the top 2 although his mono didn't seem to be as severe as some cases we have seen.
As for Del PO I hope not. He brings a lot to the tour and has been snakebit by the wrist and has not been seen realy since that run Indian wells where he beat the two best hardcourters today in back to back matches. Frankly he had Nadal as well up a set and a break before he hit the wall.
I still feel Del PO is the guy that can best challenge Murray, Djoko, and Nadal into the future.

Roddick had a mild case. Dr Ivo has viral meningitis.

Tennis is tough on the body. These guys play all year round, push their bodies/immune systems to the edge and travel extensively - a great recipe for picking up mono. Of course there are those who say mono is an increased risk from taking PEDs but I remain to be convinced of that.

I wonder about all this mono stuff for tennis players, it seems that top ranked tennis players in recent years have been getting mono more than what seems normal for the general population. Fed, Soderling, Ancic, and now maybe Del Po. I don't remember such and epidemic of mono ever before on tour and players travelled and put strain on their bodies just as often as today. I don't know about a link to PEDs but I am left a bit bewildered by all the great talent laid to waste by this disease we don't see this in any other sport either.

There were faster conditions back then that shortened points. It's come up on this forum once or twice.

Exactly.
Remember, its not just the match length that's important but what they're doing off court. These guys are pounding themselves in practice daily, much more so than years gone past. For example, Murray didn't get that fit and strong by playing matches alone. They're all raising the bar all the time, guys like Delpo et al., have to follow suit or get nowhere in the game. Their immune systems are weakened by the full stress on these guys bodies, plus the matches themselves are more brutal and intensive even though a similar length at times.

Seems like very bad news, and such a shame because he brings a great variant to the tour and he's one of the more gracious guys on tour - competes hard but takes his victories and defeats like a real man.

It could aslo be more globalization and the players travelling more. In the past we had tournaments in Europe and North America, now there seems to be more tournaments in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Latin America. I mean increased fitness of the players should help their immune system when it comes to infection. I think, although I have no had evidence it has more to do with travelling to a variety of locales that even till the 80s we didn't see this much variation and mileage put in by the top guys. It was pretty much a North American and European tour while still dominated by those areas the mileage has increased.
