Re: Little man XV
Loosehead should be Ian "Mighty Mouse" McLauchlan. Neil Back is a smaller choice at open side flanker.

The French winger you're thinking of is Marc Andreu. Depends how far back you go but David Johnstone the 1984 Scotland Grand Slam centre was not a big guy.GeordieFalcon wrote:Tom Youngs - Hooker

Re: Little man XV
Sorry but Peter Stringer is a giant compared to Russia's Alexander Yanyushkin who stands at a mere 5ft 5 compared to Stringers lofty 5ft 7.
Re: Little man XV
Has to be Andreu on the wing rather than Clerc (5'10" really isn't that short).
Kyle Eastmond at 5'6" is a good centre option.

They will struggle a tad in the line outs.

Craig Joiner on the wing
Was about 3 inchs and 2 grams
Also could have a utility position for Patterson as he was as skinny as a rake

Re: Little man XV
Any modern day proper test locks under 6'5? I can't think of any bar Derek Redman who was 6'4 and toured for the lions in 97. Chabal was never really a lock.
SA surprisingly have a number of short test players i.e. Aplon, De Jongh, Jantjies, Lambie, Hougaard, Ralepelle (all 5'10 or shorter) with Brussow also at 5'11.
The new wonder kid Sergeal Peterson is only 5'7 too... IAAF official track time of 10.5 though (will probably slow down as he bulks up to 11st+!!!)

Re: Little man XV
I think a lot of players are smaller in real life too than the official stats, when my friend got his first sarries run out he apparently put on 2 inches in height and a stone in weight! I've also met Shane Williams a few times and he's about 5ft 6 I reckon!

I meet Christian Cullen and Frank Bunce before the world cup and they were only marginally taller than me (short chinese fellah) so 5'8 for them at best.

Really? The ever reliable wiki has him down as a scrum half and sometimes fly half
Re: Little man XV
I saw Mike Cusack once.
21 stone looks a little on the conservative side, I thought.

I read this caption in the Telegraph online.
Russia's pint-of-vodka-sized Alexander Yanyushkin (centre) is the tournament's smallest player, standing at a measly 5ft 5in
As I scanned it I thought it meant he was a centre, not in the centre of the picture.

Cristian Wade looks tiny.
Diego Dominguez - Italy 10
Troncon was diminutive.
Dan Hipkiss always looks short - solid, but short.

Chester Williams always looked really small on Jonah Lomu rugby on the PS1. That count?

Re: Little man XV
I met him once during the NZ European 97 tour... was expecting a giant but he didn't really stand out amongst his fellow players. He wasn't that much bigger than standard rugby players, pro and amateur.
I guess we had built up an image of him in our minds and were disappointed he wasn't twice the size of everyone else.
The same day I also saw Zinzan practising some drop goals.... half his attempts skidded the grass and didn't get off the ground (every dog has his day I guess).... although the legend he is had quite a few days go his way. Still the daddy mind (although his brother was one mean player... who got the last spud in the Brooke family sunday get togethers???)

Robin Brooke was nasty full stop.
In '96 I got a student job working ground security for rugby and cricket matches at Lancaster Park. My 1st day was the ABs/Springboks test , and I was lucky enough post-match to be rostered onto the door of the after-match function room. That involved watching people coming in, making sure they all had the right passes round their necks. All well and good - pass, pass, pass, ... pass, pass, errno pas- Oh, sorry Jonah, your pass is up there.

Re: Little man XV
One candidate for the tiny squad would be Yoshihiro "Demi" Sakata, a Japanese winger from the 1960s. I can't track down an official height but he looks very short in photos. Said to be a real flyer, Sakata decided to develop his game by moving to New Zealand. In 1969, he was named one of the top 5 players in the world, and was an outside shot to tour with the All Blacks. He's in the IRB Hall of Fame.

Those are two good tries he scored.
