Mayweather v Canelo
Mayweather-Canelo
Just announced!
Mayweather tweet - "I chose my opponent for September 14th and it's Canelo Alvarez. I'm giving the fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand."
Canelo tweet - "The top is close on September 14 there will be a new king!"
Thoughts on this fight? 2 fights in a row Floyd's delivered, would be a great way to reach 45-0. I always thought Canelo needed more experience despite the huge interest in this fight, and it will show!
p.s the weight's not been announced by either fighter but Fighthype have reported that it will be a jr. middleweight unification bout.
** Hey guys, I added a poll to this for early thoughts. Didn't want to start a new thread - Seanusarrilius**

This is really good news, a reason to be excited and a real addition to floyd's legacy if he wins I think.

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
The world's at Canelo's feet should he win, but what if he loses?
It has to add to Mayweather legacy, both Guerrero and Canelo were coming off great wins.
Call me shallow but I wouldn't be mad if Floyd took it easy after this, Garcia and then maybe a fight in the U.K against Khan! Deserves to have an easy conclusion to what's been an illustrious career.

I'm glad the sport many claim to be dead is having a great year, any chance of this coming close to or eclipsing the Oscar fight ppv wise?
Also Schaefer's said it will be a CATCHWEIGHT at 152, not a bad one.

Fantastic news, this was the one fight I didn't think Floyd would take so super excited if it happens (anything can happen before the fight date!).
Never a fan of catchweights and don't think any titles should be on the line. De La Hoya tweeted 4 belts will be on the line. If Canelo was to win would he be a WW champion?!?

There will be four light middleweight titles on the line, two WBA belts (regular and super) and two WBC (regular and diamond), despite the fight not being fought at the light middleweight limit.
The whole situation is ridiculous.

Queuing up to get their sanctioning fees. Surprised they stopped at two apiece.

Forget the belts, this fight could be special. Canelo has the size to overwhelm Mayweather, especially if he is allowed to rehydrate properly.

If it goes ahead, does this significantly increase FMJ's standing with you haz? You have been slightly critical of his career at the higher weights (if I remember correctly).

Didn't Mayweather tweet he was fighting Devon Alexander a few months ago and then ended up fighting Guerrero?
I really want this fight to be made, but will only believe it once the promotion begins.
This would elevate Mayweather's status as a top 10 ATG in my reasoning if he manages to score. Have no problem this being at a 152lb Catchweight either.

If Floyd wins this there will be no doubting his top ten ATG status. It will be a given!. Already in it for me but this win surely ends the debate for doubters.

Belts shouldn't be on the line but no one really cares about them anyway, hopefully 152 doesn't effect Canelo, really did not think Mayweather would go for this fight so pleased he has, all credit to him.

Fat Dan broke this on ESPN and said a 152 CATCHWEIGHT had been agreed.
Yes, that's right, world light middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather won't fight at light middleweight against his light middleweight opponent.
Hmmmmmmmm where are all the Flomo's now that discredited Manny's Cotto win over the same 2lb catchweight difference........??

Great news and props to Mayweather for taking this, although he can stop the defamination of Manny now, since the fight will 152 lbs !
However I've no probs with catchweights if we get the right fights.

What an event this is going to be!
Biggest fight in so long...
We know Alvarez will come in big and I wondered how much bigger he is than Floyd....
Turns out he's half an inch shorter than Floyd and Floyd has a 2 inch reach advantage!!

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
Although the catchweight leaves an ever so slight mark on this for me (I simply don't see why it's needed, full stop), I'm still very happy that this fight seems to be made, simply because, for the first time in six years or so, Mayweather will actually be stepping through the ropes to face an opponent who, by consensus, is the riskiest and / or most lucrative he could face.
Credit to him for confounding the critics and sceptics. I had misigivings about whether we'd ever see this one take place, so you can add me to that group, I guess.
As for the fight itself, I still don't see much of a case for Alvarez winning and I'm expecting Floyd to run out a points winner by a reasonably comfortable margin. But if Mayweather does win, it certainly adds more weight to his legacy than any win over the likes of Ortiz or Guerrero, simply because he's in there with a bigger man with heavy hands, who is coming in off the back of an excellent win and who will likely still be one of the cornerstones of big-time boxing in the States another half dozen years down the line, regardless of the result in this bout.
But Alvarez proved me wrong against Trout, showing an immensely improved defence and a bit more craft to go with his brute strength, so you never know.
Mayweather all day for me, but roll on September. Should be an interesting one.

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
Props to Mayweather for taking this fight...I like many never imagined him doing so. I am going to hold off completely celebrating until everything is firmly in place and we are on the promotional road. Anything can happen even if it has been tweeted by those involved but lets cross our fingers and hope.
The catch-weight rightly gives people a chance to throw the same accusations at Floyd as he and his fans did at Manny when the Pacman took on Cotto at 152. It's important that Mayweather just leaves that in his past now as if he has this fight yet continues to bang that drum then he only discredits his own merits should he win.
I would have preferred it at 154 but there we go....we can't have everything and I will be happy with the fact we are getting a real genuine pick them fight. Mayweather obviously the more skilled operators of the two and I think he will win....but Canelo brings youth, yet experience, along with good power and solid all round skills not to mention the weight advantage.
Great that yet another huge fight is being made and by having the biggest draw in boxing taking on a legitimate challenge and one everyone wants to see him in against it will give this sport a huge shot in the arm that it's been crying out for.
2013 may very well be remembered as the year boxing came off life support and began to function properly once more!!
I would say that I have two concerns going forward:
1) We learn that the contract stipulates that Canelo cannot rehydrate to above 154 or something silly like that.
2) Mayweather has asked for 152 catchweight but then doesn't bother making that weight and comes heavier than Saul....given his previous in doing this I wouldn't put it past him.
Lets hope none of the above happen and Floyd gets in the ring with an Alvarez who is the legitimate boxer we know. If he does and wins then he has that extra defining win that I have used to stop him from being in my Top 10 fighters of all time.

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
big respect to Floyd for this. To take on a bigger dangerous young undefeated lion is something else at his age! Ai f he wins this, which I expect him to, then it is. Huge tick for his legacy. If he wins it in style , I.e dominates or stops him, we will seriously have to start talking about where he stands in the all time list! I think the 152 thing is insignificant... Canelo comes in huge fight night, it is just an attempt by Floyd to create a minor distraction for Canelo's people! This is a HUGE fight!
p.s he doesn't take this if there is any doubt about his hand!

So happy this fight has been made.
The P4P King against what many think is the would be King.
Titles on the line are:
Canelo's WBC, WBA(super) and Ring/Linear Super Welterweight titles
Mayweather's WBA(super) Super Welterweight title.
El Canelo's getting better all the time, I hope he pulls it off!

Canelo in a win-win situation, he'll be 23 and of he losses he can come again and may set up an even bigger if its close

Floyd has never weighed more than 151lbs so I doubt he will come in heavier! There's also no weight stips Ellerbe said he can come in at 200lbs if he likes

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
This could be a very tough assignment for Mayweather. He has never been as convincing above 147 and I think Alvarez is better than the versions of Cotto and de la Hoya he faced there. I was suspicious he would look to sidestep this one but am very happy he has taken it on. Alvarez also showed against Trout that he can cope with boxers of the more technical variety. Mayweather will need to be at his best to win. His performances against Cotto and Oscar might not be enough to decisively beat Alvarez.

Silly catch weight for a massive fighter like Canelo. Much harder losing 2lb than putting it on. Canelo has proven he struggles to make weight.

Having said i am happy for this fight, I need to clarify I am happy because it gives the Floyd doubters what they want. They genuinely believe that at this stage of his career Canelo is the right man to bet him! I'm happy about this!
But now to the truth. My analysis of this fight is very simple! It's a mismatch! It was close to one when Floyd was fighting the way he did under Roger towards the end, I.e in the Cotto fight. However with Floyd senior in board now, it is a complete mismatch. Someone earlier put forward Trout as evidence of Canelo being able to cope with a technical boxer! Come on!!! Trout compared to Floyd is stratospheres apart. The truth is once Floyd saw Canelo vs Trout he became even more convinced he beats this kid easy! I'm still shocked by people's judgement of the Trout fight. I think because they saw Canelo triumph in a purer boxing match they got carried away. Please go and watch that fight again and I think you might come to the conclusion that it was a much tighter affair in reality. Prediction, if Floyds hands hold up look for his first stoppage win in. Long time down the stretch! Bookmark this!

Looks like a Taylor-Chavez type fight to me................Canelo is the heir to Chavez and Floyd isn't getting any younger...
Not a mismatch for me...Canelo hits Floyd he'll know about it..

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
I think if he wins, he's worthy of top 5 ATG status. It'll mean he's dominated the man in each weight class from SFW to LMW - something that given the weight difference is huge. He's certainly worthy of being the best P4P boxer of the last 25 years (if he wins)
I'm concerned with the catchweight, but I honestly believe its because Floyd knows he's better at lower weights rather than trying to drain Canelo. It means theres no pressure on him to weigh 154 and take away his mobility, although if I'm right he can weigh in at anything between 147 and 154 for a LMW fight? If thats true then perhaps it is to even out the playing field, because Canelo certainly looks more like a MW than a LMW, so perhaps its just to give him a slight advantage. Who knows...
Really looking forward to the fight, Mayweather wins this all night long, I'd have serious doubts about Canelo vs Cotto, Alvarez is good, but one win against Trout doesn't really convince me he's all of a sudden created a new dimension to his game. Trout may have had a career best vs Cotto, we've seen that before time and again where a boxer wins - then disappoints, Buster Douglas, Sergio Mora etc.
Bring on September

Re: Mayweather-Canelo
I'm happy this fight is taking place it's the opportunity for Money May to silence some of the critics and I think it will be an easier win for Mayweather than the majority of the boxing world predict. I saw nothing in the Canelo vs Trout fight that would seriously trouble Mayweather, the size difference will be the only issue, but I fully expect May to use his speed and movement to counter not let size enter the equation.
I have no problem with catchweights, as they do allow us to see the fights that we want. The only issue I have is that belts should not be on the line if a catchweight is in place. However this one is slightly different to the Manny vs Cotto or Manny vs Margarito fights for me as both fighters are belt holders in the division. Pacquiao was coming up to challenge for a title at the weights without previously holding a belt there thus putting a slight question mark over the fights in terms of his legacy and claiming to be a 7/8 weight division champion, whereas it's not a new weight division title for Mayweather and he already has the claim of being a 5 division champion picking up Canelo's titles don't add to that.
I think this can cast either a bigger or smaller shadow over the catchweight issue however. The argument can be made that Mayweather has won titles, twice, at the 154 limit so why is the catchweight necessary. Or it can be made that, as they are both title holders and it is still above the WW limit and below the LM limit why not put the titles on the line as both are current champions and both are happy to fight at the 152 catchweight.
Ultimately I don't think the catchweight will play too much of an issue here though as this is the fight that everybody wants to see and I think people will turn a blind eye.

It doesn't do a lot for him (in my book at least) as Canelo is relatively unproven. I would expect Mayweather to beat him (and with relative ease). Someone made a comment on Twitter this morning that it reminded them of Ward v Froch (first fight) which I thought was right on the money.
Kudos to Floyd for taking the bout, though. On paper it's the toughest challenge available to him (apart from maybe Pacquiao and at a huge stretch Martinez). You can't ask any more of him in tackling Canelo.
In terms of legacy building: continuing to win will help. A final flourish might change my opinion on where he sits all time but he's nowhere near the top ten (as a good many of posters on here believe).
A win over Martinez for the middleweight crown would help change my mind but that's a stretch for Floyd (who's a welterweight) and so I have no grumbles with him staying where he is.

Not a mismatch for me...Canelo hits Floyd he'll know about it..
It won't give the Floyd doubters what they want...
Looks like your hedging ur bets Truss! Call it son! One minute Canelo is too green the next it seems you suggest he has a real chance. I don't want u sitting on the fence on this one! Call it. I am clear this is as lopsided a decision as Guerrero or the real possibility of a round 8 to 10 stoppage!

Has there ever been a p4p no.1 who was a red top? Should help ginger kids in playgrounds all over the country.

I was joking about him being green........As when Mayweather wins that will be the way of dismissing his win....
Canelo by late stoppage.
