Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
Couple of observations:
Quins - 1 signing seems insane. Yes back youth but if we really don't have any money with the current squad them some players are getting too much. Likewise if we do have spare funds then I really think we need a couple more signings. Especially as we've lost Johnston, Browne and Brooker from the boiler room.
London Welsh have been decimated, 12 players out!

A couple of Chiefs inaccuracies from your source, yappy:
Richie Baxter was a no8 rather than a lock, and Tommy Hayes isn't moving anywhere, let alone Munster. Plus we are in the market for another hooker (Si Alcott has also retired), another tighthead to replace Budgie, and an additional lock/blindside to replace Aly Muldowney, I believe

Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
Championship squads tend to be much smaller, Notts have only got a squad of 19 heading into next season, though they may try to sign a couple more then loan from Tigers. LW will be able to loan from other London clubs and using Jones connections Welsh players as well.
I'd expect Quins to nab a few in the summer yet. They often announce signings fairly late so I wouldn't be suprised to see them raid the Championship again.

Exeter is the team that stands out for me. 13 players out and only 4 players in. Are they now going for a more high quality elite squad to specifically target certain parts of the season... instead of a larger squad with more depth to compete on all front throughout the season? Will be interesting to see how it goes, if they are changing in that way their HC campaign will be most interesting.

Well that's the first I've seen of Mills going to Sale and I'm gutted about that. He's an outstanding, committed player and I'd have loved him to come to Glaws.

More to do with the academy producing about a million players this season. Check out the JWC squad. Like ASBO says few more signings in the scrum hopefully.

Hhmm nah the problem was getting rid of all our local lads like Flood, tait etc...and employing a policy of too many foreign journeymen and poor manager.
We have a few prospects coming through now though...see what happens...

That's what i'm worried about, too many of your young lads being lured away by the bright lights of other clubs. We seem to be able to keep hold of ours for now but who knows once the cheque books come out!

Having the odd player pinched each year will be an annoyance, but the decision to actively offload your England backs (Flood, Tait, Noon) and replace them with journeymen indicated a real lack of ambition. After that it was perhaps unsurprising that the likes of Parling, Brookes, Young, Gray & Clegg all left. Of course except for Parling the moves did not exactly work out for the players.

Could it also be that Ex aren't too fussed about getting far in Europe so a larger squad and experienced players aren't needed to cover that aspect. I imagine they'll be more focussed on a top four finish and giving the top teams as much grief as possible.
Surprised that Tigers have released Cornwall, wasn't he only just arrived at Tigers?

Could also be a tough season for London Irish and Wasps again. Both have nearly lost a full starting team and bought in close to the same numbers, that can not be good for building a settled team and getting those systems in place.
Irish to be relegation contenders again and Wasps to be mid table.

Seconded! I'd love a bit more experience to bed in this year and help take over from Kohn and Easter as they get on.

Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
Looking at Wasps signings as well most of them don't have top level experience. Given the calibre going out either Dai is going to unearth some gems there or some big players still to be signed.
If not I imagine his budget may have been cut significantly. Wasps may really struggle. Newcastle seems to be in better shape this time around and actually stay up. Be interesting to see who will be in the dog fight come middle of the season.

I be hoping Saints can bring in Gareth Delve.
Instant captain and uber quality player.

Delve is a good call. But do you really need a no8? Or would you be playing him at 10?

Think Wasps will be OK, Sale, Wuss and Irish and Newcastle will be a bit behind them for me

Who do we reckon we could get in the pack, Yappy? Any EQ players we could snatch?

Irish havent lost a starting team at all.
Lahiff and Garvey were the only regulars from last season.
As good as they are, Corbs only played 1 leage game and Joseph a handful but Guy Armitage was 1st choice 13.
A lot of players are leaving though.

I'm not actually sure that we want EQ players... Currently we probably field just three none EQ's in Kohn, Mo and Evans. Behind them it's all EQ players as well bar Botica and all three of those will be playing less rugby next year (age/injuries for Kohn, form and youngsters for Mo and the rest agreement for Nev).
So for me two more NEQ players that'll be available all season round would be perfect, especially if they're experienced.

Must be loads of French players upset in France of being ousted by foreigners to ironically come over here for us?

From my quick googling skills I count that's 30 foreign players moving into the premiership this season. But 45 seem to be leaving.

CJ, there's a lot of players heading out of Perpignan, including Mas and the brace Tigers have pinched. Could be some options from there for Quins, particularly in the tight five.

Interesting idea, I wouldn't mind a couple of gnarly French forwards playing at Quins, they'd potentially suit our style of play more then say SA players, and with Quins actually being in London we're only a short plane/Eurostar journey from Paris.
Perhaps Stade or Biarritz might have some players that want to stay in the HC next season...

Play him at Hooker and make him captain. Kind of has the face of a hooker, don't you think? Rather beaten, broken and squished.yappysnap wrote:Delve is a good call. But do you really need a no8? Or would you be playing him at 10?
Seriously, we actually do need an 8. Van Velze was not a great signing. Delve would lock down the base of the scrum and is a very good all around player. Can play 6 or 8. As an added bonus, it would stop the Mallinder experimentation of always playing his second rows in the back row. Drives me nutz.

I lived in Bath for a year, I understand.
Delve would be a great signing for Saints.

As Carpe has indicated, our 4 in & 13 out numbers don't look quite so skewed when the academy is taken into context - I'm expecting to see a lot more of Dave Ewers, Will Carrick-Smith and the U20 crew, specifically Sam Hill at centre, Henry Slade at 10, Jack Nowell on the wing and Luke Cowan-Dickie at either loosehead or hooker - with 3 or 4 additional signings expected too, that sort of balances things up a bit for Exe

Why would Saints need to play him at 10? We have the current England fly-half .yappysnap wrote:Delve is a good call. But do you really need a no8? Or would you be playing him at 10?

Agreed. I think he may improve but is currently too raw. Makes too many mistakes, although he did at least cut down on giving away as many penalties as the season progressed. Would love it if we signed Delve but the only place I've seen him linked is in your posts Doctor .yappysnap wrote:Seriously, we actually do need an 8. Van Velze was not a great signing..

Myler had a decent end to the season (brain fart in final aside). They may need another option in case of injury though. Henson would be a great option for them if they can beat Bath to his signature.

They have signed Dickson from NZ to be backup to Myler but I know nothing about him other than he has got a big boot. I agree that Myler did okay since Christmas but his best will always just be good not great. Still I admire his loyalty and at least I didn't have to keep checking my pants when he started for Saints, unlike a certain Mr Lamb who always gave the impression that a howling mistake was just around the corner (although I hope the tougher Tigers environment is finally the catalyst that makes him realise his true potential).formerly known as Sam wrote:Myler had a decent end to the season (brain fart in final aside). I wouldn't personally want Henson. I don't mind Henson the player (although he is nowhere near the standard he once was) but I'm not bothered about the circus that comes with him even though he did his best to keep a low profile at Welsh. Just think he will always be a distraction no matter where he ends up, he attracts a disproportionate amount of media interest due to his past which can only serve as a distraction to the rest of the squad.

Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
The Dickson bloke is a utility back aged 26. No caps, no Super 15 experience and no previous time spent in the European pro leagues. Bit of a gamble having him as the only back up to Myler. Wiki has him down as playing only 33 games for Otago.
Henson played well for LW last season and covers 10 and 12, kept a low profile and will crucially be cheap at the moment.

Sam Henson kept his profile low because he was injured a lot plus he played for a low profile side.
Yappysnap I don't think Marcelo Bosch has yet been confirmed as a signing for Saracens though there was the rumour because a French newspaper said it was happening.

Just because a player is injured doesn't mean players will necessarily keep a low profile. Easy to just go boozing and get bored enough to do something stupid whilst bored with all the spare time available.

I was quite hoping Clegg would find his way to Northampton prior to deciding on returning to Newcastle. I just felt his passing game could have worked well bringing the likes of Burrell, the Pisi brothers, Foden, Elliot, etc into play. He stagnated a bit at Quins I think it's fair to say but in his age-group days he had a brilliant passing game so hopefully can recapture that back at Newcastle - though he may well be keeping Joel Hodgson out of the side which is a shame.
