He was in the tabloids a few times, drunk, getting turned away from parties while injured.

Thats a very good point, one I hadn't considered. Hopefully JM is thinking more along your lines. Still would rather not have Henson at the Gardens thoughformerly known as Sam wrote:The Dickson bloke is a utility back aged 26. No caps, no Super 15 experience and no previous time spent in the European pro leagues. Bit of a gamble having him as the only back up to Myler. Wiki has him down as playing only 33 games for Otago.

Northampton have confirmed the signing of former Leeds prop Gareth Denman from Rotherham according to the BBC. I know nothing about him other than he is a tight-head who can cover loose-head. Will begin the season as third choice 3 behind Ma'afu & Mercey.

Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
I missed those LT, maybe he isn't such a good option then.
B9 it was pointed out to me by a Saints fan I know, he was a little concerned about what would happen if Myler tore an ACL in September. The utility option with the big boot will be cheap and a useful squad addition but with no other recognised 10 in the squad it could all go south quickly if the Kiwi doesn't settle in. I'm sure there's a Championship 10 that can be brought in as a salary cap friendly understudy.

I have daughters who need to keep up with celeb giossip to have something to talk about in the playground. (thats my excuse for knowing he had a drunken night with Katie Price in December and was turned away from a girls Aloud party - and I am sticking to it)

Just looking at those lists, some good business done by Deano at Newcastle. Brookes and Saull could be particularly handy, and before injury Clegg looked to be developing into a classy 10. Blair will bring a steady hand to the 9 jersey as well.
On the other hand I'm not sure Godman will add much, and Lawson is a bit of a journeyman.

Just seen that Danny Barnes is joining Newcastle from Munster. Promising centre. Looks like Richards is looking for some bargains, and players he feels he can develop and improve (Phil Godman aside).

Yeah as we've discussing on the Newcastle Thread...Deano seems to be looking at young lads who maybe havent quite fullfilled their potential ,and get that potential out of them.
Clegg, Saul, Brookes, McKensie, Powell, Cato, Barnes...all fit that mould. IF he can achieve it...then it will be a very interesting side indeed...but if not...then we could be in for a long season.
Godman and Lawson have not impressed me at all!!!

They might just be experienced squad cover though Geordie. There's other options available in both positions it's not like they are the obvious first choice option. More likely to be Blair and Clegg starting off the season.

Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
Still, I'm not sure Godman has the sort of experience Newcastle would be looking for. He's a slick passer, but doesn't handle pressure well, and doesn't have the pace to take half chances on the break. His kicking game is inadequate.
I think Clegg is an interesting an potentially inspired gamble, but I can't believe Newcastle didn't have a better option than Phil Godman. If you wanted an average ex-Scot, Dan Parks would probably have been a better bet from Connacht. Better kicker, and his game would suit the winter conditions in the North East - i.e. play for territory and if in doubt remove the leather from the ball.

Soo looking at those European pools and the squads that the AP teams are building I can only realistically see Saracens and Saints getting out of their pools. The others just don't have the firepower at the moment, or are in groups of death.

Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
Judging by Montpellier's previous lack of HEC interest we might be able to creep through Yappy. Ulster will beat us at Ravenhill but we should beat them at Welford Rd and then It's just who can pick up the most points on the road as neither team should lose at home.
I can't see Saints getting through against Leinster, Ospreys and Castre.

Have some faith man. If we can away from Clermont giving ASM only 4 and taking 1 then I think we could top the Pool, we needed a kick up the arse and this is it

I am very surprised to see only 1 player coming to Quins and 7 leaving.
Are we promoting within for those that have left or is COS just playing cards close to chest for other yet to be named players.

Will Gonzo Tiesi still go to Welsh now they've been relegated! Wouldn't mind having him back at Quins.

An insight to Chiefs recruitment Ali Hepher interview
Re: Aviva Premiership Squads for Next Season (Hopefully up to Date)
Sounds like the usual understated but effective Chiefs recruitment is continuing nicely. I'd like to see them target the HEC next season as I think they can spring a surprise or two along the way and slip into the Amlin which they could win.

Tom Hicks has just signed for Glaws from Saints, but I must confess to knowing nothing about the player. I believe he is joining our academy rather than seen as a senior player.

Dom Barrow has rejected a new contract with Carnegie and will be leaving the club this summer. Most likely heading north to Falcons.

Have some faith man. If we can away from Clermont giving ASM only 4 and taking 1 then I think we could top the Pool, we needed a kick up the arse and this is it
Quins top their HC pool? They wont even win a game.

Clegg to Saints would have been a good move for both parties. His chances of regular action would have hinged on him refinding his points kicking mojo though.
I don't think Saints have finished their shopping yet.

I wander if we will see Fotuali at 10 at all? I prefer Dickson / Fotuali to Fotuali / Myler personally

Racing don't prioritize the HEC and the Scarlets don't exactly have the meanest of packs. Quins will certainly grab some home wins but their qualification will depend on what they can manage away from home. If they get the Scarlets in the double header that'll be a bonus for them as the December conditions will hamper the Scarlets and Quins pack should be able to bully them in the tight.

Question is, can we get some LBPs from visiting Clermont?

Clermont are tough away from home, if you can quiet the fans you can really get into them and apply pressure. We would have done alright and nabbed a LBP a couple of seasons back but we had several decisions go against us. A bit of luck and you might grab something.

If we're lucky Clermont will be out of love with the European comp next season, after giving their all this season and falling short. If we could beat them at The Stoop then perhaps we could get close away in France.
Scarlets destroyed Saints and were demolished by Tigers over the last few seasons, I don't think we can guess what sort of team we'll be playing but we must target two wins against them. Get those two wins and win our other home games and then we'll be well in the mix.

Sam why did Tigers let A Tuilagi go? He's been a colossus against Scotland today? Mulipola as well has been very impressive, his pace off the mark is frightening for someone carrying so much weight!

Alessana was offered a MASSIVE contract in Japan. Cockers described it as more than a tenth of the salary cap and had advised Alex to take it as wingers just can't earn that much in the AP and I think he's in his thirties now and that's the kind of money that makes your post playing life much easier.

It was great to see Alessana looking so fit. It is rather shocking to think that was just his 27th cap for Samoa spread over 11 years. He is now 32, and you cannot begrudge a man with young kids near the end of his career taking such a large salary - over £500k.
Would have loved to have kept him and Agulla, but finances meant we could not - and Thompstone and Goneva have done pretty well for us, with Morris and Tait really coming to the party as well.

Agree it was great to see Alessana playing so well today. The amount the Tuilagi's have given to Leicester rugby is quite incredible so I was actually quite happy when I heard that Cockers advise him to take a contract of that sort when it was put in front of him.
Morris, Goneva, Thompstone, Benjamin, Camacho - If they can get fit we sure as hell won't be short of wings next season!

I especially loved the way he got low and smashed the tackler out of the way at the start of the run for his 2nd try. (If Lamb or Allen were watching it may have sparked PTSD). Manu can be a wrecking ball but is a lot more upright. Perhaps he could learn this skill from big bro?

Cheaper feed then when he was putting up Mulipola and Manu. That's a shopping bill you wouldn't want to be footing!

Well he has daughters, so they may not eat as much as Freddie's boys do.
Mind you any saving on food bills will be offset elsewhere

Speaking of kids, England should start working on getting Harry Evans converted as early as possible

Great for you perhaps!
His performance against Scotland was absolutely top class. Everytime the ball went anywhere near him, Visser looked as if he'd just dropped his load!

It's the new RFU coaching technique LT, It's all to do with getting your shoulders through the tackle so the pass/offload can be made. Dropping the shoulder is a bit all or nothing, you either go through or go to ground. The breakdowns are such a lottery It's all about keeping the ball alive.

Woah - that's a touch insightful for this place!
I used to like Toonie's technique of getting his arms up and over the tackle for the quick offload. I suspect though if you tried that these days your ribs wouldn't last five minutes......

Add Greg Bateman to Chiefs from London Welsh. Another Baxter type signing. Any views?

Really don't know about this one, thought we were fairly well stocked with hookers. Would rather see another SR tbh.

In the announcement, there's a strong indication that there's one coming, CD, in addition to Don Armand, a 4/6 from the Stormers, possibly plus another utility back

I'd forgotten that we'd lost a couple of our hookers as well, Clark and Alcott. Still be nice to get that new SR. In Baxter we trust, he hasn't steered us wrong yet.
