That's the stupid question phrasing again GSC, "A FORMER WINNER" means someone who isn't currently the winner, which Federer is. If I'd have known we were going for "ANY WINNER" I'd have said Federer

Technically he's not. If he's the current winner, he's just that - the current winner. He can't be a former winner if he's the current winner, the English language doesn't allow you to be both. I don't know the technical terms needed to win this bout of nitpicking, but if you are currently hungry, you don't say you used to be hungry, you say you are hungry. Someone with a PhD in English please help me

You say you're currently hungry but you wouldn't say you used to be hungry. Because its irrelevent to tell someone you used to be hungry. Not a good analogy.
