Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Always thought Mickey Duff was brilliant with his matchmaking and his timing.............
John Mugabi has to be one of the best managed fighters I've ever seen.........A dour Ugandan was turned into a 100% KO machine basically through sticking fighters with limited movement in front of him.....Then he was chucked in with Hagler in a no lose fight which raised his profile even more!!........Should have beaten the limited Thomas but Mugabi did seem to have a yellow streak.........Then chucked in with the worst light middle champion in history!!!..........Unfortunately lost the title in a mandatory!!!..........
Then was given one last shot against the in front of him MCclellan in a battle of punchers and lost..........
A good career for a guy of limited talent...........Anymore for anymore..

Frank Bruno - fed on a diet of stiffs even after Jumbo Cummings first made us aware that Frank's chin may not have been as rock solid as his biceps. One of the few guys who managed to get FOUR tilts at a World title despite never really being anything better than Euro level

The beast didnt look yellow against hagler truss. But it sure knocked the stuffing out of him, going forward. The soft lardy guy served up to Norris and especially McClellan was the living embodiment of the definition of a shot fighter. 'Living' might be overselling him.
I don't want to start another hatton debate, but you can't have a thread with this title without his name being an obvious shout.

He'd shipped enough leather in the previous ten for me to think yellow is a bit harsh for that fight, regardless.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Nope I've never called curry a quitter... And I haven't commented on Mugabi as a quitter other than to say I think the hagler fight knocked the stuffing out of him... And he took a fair beating in it. Certainly from the 6th.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
There are certain fights which are almost career ending; Hagler vs Mugabi was one for Mugabi as he met someone who would go toe to toe with him. Calzaghe vs Lacy was another.
What abour Ottke? Unbeaten, world champion, never had to fight the best out there.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Almost career ending. For Mugabi, because he had lost his air of invincibility and so was never quite so feared again. Also, taken to some place he never wanted to go back to, which is why he was willing to quit in later fights.

Chisora. Average heavyweight who doesn't bother training half the time and he's had two massive paydays against Vitali and Haye as well as some step aside money from Wlad. Doing well for himself for a very limited plodder.

Thing is, you can say a lot of Warren's fighters were beautifully managed (Cook, Rees, Arthur etc etc). All world titlists yet people still think Warren is crap.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Calzaghe had the odds stacked in his favour for most of his career. He was used as a mainstay to prop up Warren's cards in the main. Then, when he'd reached the end of his product life cycle, Warren threw him in with Lacy (and then realised what he had). A trio of fights against Kessler (huge home advantage), Hopkins (perceived to be past his best) and Jones (shot) and he's suddenly rich and rated as one of our best ever (and walks away healthy).
Nifty footwork that.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Speaking of Bruno, what about Jim Watt? Same man at the helm (for the best years of Jim's career anyway) in Terry Lawless, and he did a fantastic job by his man.
Given that Watt didn't have the greatest of starts to his career, and was an awkward kind of fighter with a left which was only ever any good for wiping away the sweat with, it's a tribute to Lawless that he ended up earning more money than any other British fighter up until that point, as well as being the first British fighter to make four successful world title defences on the trot.
He and his team made their ascent to the top of the Lightweight rankings at a perfect time, really, just after Duran had vacated his belts and moved up, and Lawless did a great job in getting Watt some superb title defences in Britain when you'd normally have thought he'd have had to travel for them; Davis (who was in line to become American boxing's next big star and could otherwise have been expected to remain Stateside), O'Grady (let's be honest, if that one takes place in anything other than a UK ring, O'Grady walks away with the belt!) and Arguello, all coming to challenge Watt in either Scotland or England.
Brilliant job all round, methinks.

Cheers milky always good to get recognition sort of like Marconi who invented the telephone only for the praise to go to Bell.
Anyway on topic I think De La Hoya wears this particular crown imo.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Very true ONETWO it is nice to get recognition for an orignal idea. I wrote a thread on the tennis forum a few weeks back, suggesting certain players are better suited to playing in wet conditions and I was universally lambasted for it. Then two weeks ago the self same theory was brought back up as a universally acclaimed fact. When I brought up the fact that I was told its rubbish, I was asked "Whats your point?"
Back on topic, its Chavez jr. for me. How that kid found 40 bums and won a major world title (he was the Ring champ too, wasnt he?) is beyond me.

Sugar Ray Leonard, not fed complete bums and Dundee made sure to test him with every style imaginable before putting him in a big fight.

Re: Beautifully managed fighters!!!
Ricky Hatton was the best managed fighter of all time.
2 weight world champ, had fights against p4p 1 and 2 at the time.
With his out of fight antics and his ability he should never have got anywhere near that.
