Music Cup Round 7 - Dead Artists
First topic message reminder :
I really wanted to call this round 'coffin botherers' but I refrained so as not to offend the sensibilities of the wider forum.
Last round was a romp for transgender anthem Lola, followed by Rod Stewarts ode to a slightly morally corrupt woman sleeping with a schoolboy.
Back on more solid ground with this round, so please select your TWO favourite tracks from the poll. Maybe leave a reason why you voted for what you did, or even better, insult the selection of some of the rubbish tracks here.
The next round will be a bit of a narrower field, and I want your album openers. I.e. songs that are first on the album upon which they were originally released. I am taking a stand and refusing to accept compilation/best of albums because they will be all good songs.
Get them into me by Monday morning if you can and we'll get this hopping along.
Leaderboard is on the last round thread if you are so inclined to view it.

It's both a cover & a parody as it's not parodying the original song. Any links to any other funny stuff of theirs? Tend to get a bit distracted when on youtube so haven't had too much joy with their material.

As for my covers, in no order:
1) Paul Anka covers Wonderwall by Oasis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMtGJczyZdw
2) Jeff Buckley covers Lilac Wine by Hope Faye -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PC68rEfF-o
3) Nina Simone covers Feeling Good by Cy Grant (though the Muse version is excellent too)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5Y11hwjMNs
4) The Jimi Hendrix Experience covers All Along THe Watchtower by Bob Dylan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLV4_xaYynY
5) Bastille and Gabrielle Aplin covers Dreams by Fleetwood Mac https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2Zu7qJqDXQ
Though I personally love Covers so I have loads more and a few that push these 5 very close

He's not meant to be a singer, he's a songwriter, comedian (stand up) and doctor before that. The only musical parody act I know that can actually sing is Jack Black

Oasis. Though it's probably not really worthy of further discussion, my comment was just a cheap dig.

Can I just point out someone called Randy Savage got more votes than Elvis and John Lennon managed between them. Not what one would describe as one of the forums prouder moments me thinks.

Two votes, looks like I've cracked it with Hyper D.

How could anyone compile a list of dead young modern artists and not include Jimmy Morrison and Janis Joplin?

John Lennon is a nil points person imo, but I agree with Elvis. 1812 and Otis for me (more for the dearth of tracks I really rate in the selection).
Opening song of album
I wanna be adored - The Stone Roses eponymous debut.
Twiddling ambient noodling metamorphosises and builds track by track from individual elements (each of which I'd happily listen to in isolation) leading into a crescendo of a whole that is greater than the sum of it's parts. It's monumental on the (softer almost poppy) album and stunning as an opener live with a harder edgier feel that does sit in a more rock type situation.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Dead Artists
Technically correct maybe but it's not that black and white, is it? What about The Plastic Ono Band? Disclude Lennon then?
Ask someone who sang 'No Woman, No Cry', they'll say Bob Marley. Ask them who sang 'People Are Strange' and they'll say The Doors.
There is a difference.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Dead Artists
Actually, I think it's a fairly tough call as I absolutely love the final transition into the song proper on BiH (as a fairly committed fan).
But for a wider audience I'd suggest that the intro (to the intro) to BiH may well have too much ambient noodling. To me adored is not only a great track, on a great album but that the album structure itself is nigh on perfect and so to have a stand out intro to the first track that fits studio and live (can't test it vs BiH live as they'd never start with anything other than adored) is simply stunning.

The radio edit (IWBA) is terrible. The song doesn't stand up without the intro.
The Second Coming is criminally underrated. Compare the success of that album to the likes of Travis / Dodgy and some of the other tripe around at that time and you can see why they become disillusioned.
Heard Squire say they had some new material on Radio 6 the other day. Whether they record that he wouldn't say.

This thread has taught me that after being a teenager you shouldn't watch wrestling, excessively masturbate or listen to heavy metal. And now that watching Lost Boys takes you from being a child to a teenager (I only watched it 3 months ago).

Personally speaking, I don't think there is a problem with continuing those activities.
If you do all three at once, then, yeah, something has gone wrong somewhere.

Re: Music Cup Round 7 - Dead Artists
Id have gone Janis Joplin but Id already picked her and the main song of hers I like in an old round. I dont like seeing songs come up twice.
My next round pick is one of my favourite songs ever, even picked it over Changes by David Bowie which I'm sure would hit votes (note to others; Hunky Dory's first track is Changes)
