Jeff: Saints : Leon Barwell loses battle with cancer

Barwell, who stepped down from his Saints post last week, had been battling the disease for 18 months, but after a recent deterioration of his condition he passed away this morning, aged just 46.
Shamefacedly, I earlier wrongly reported this as the loss of his father, Keith.
Saints are a great club and I'm sure we all share their loss.

I read a very good biographical piece about the Brawell family in Rugby World last year. Very sad to see this especially more sad to see that it is the son who had still so much of life to experience.

Very sad news indeed. My thoughts are firmly with his family, friends and the club.
Saints are the epitome of a financially viable club and the Barwell family are central to that.

A great loss for the Jeff.
I had no idea about Leon's condition. But it is a shattering loss to his club, his family and rugby fans everywhere.

It explains why he stepped down form the chairman role last week. 46 is no age at all, and for someone whose next birthday is 47, this is rather sobering.

These events do rather put things in perspective, don't they. Very sad but something families everywhere are going through. Doesn't ease their pain any to know they are not alone in their grief. RIP, you will be sorely missed by many.

Sad news for the rugby family. The Barwell's have put so much into the club and the AP and 46 is no age at all. He'll be playing in the great game in the sky now.
