Why the Maitland bashing?
First topic message reminder :
I don't get why many posters have turned on Sean Maitland following the game yesterday? Are folk already forgetting how well he played on wed? Maybe he was tired yesterday with such a little turn around?
He has been far better than cuthbert yet everyone (well, the majority) has dismissed him as being a test starter!!! One bad game and yer out? 3/4's of the team would have been punted by now if that was the case.
Maitland is a classy player and I hope he is picked to start and I hope he proves his worth.

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
What has Maitland done to deserve a start let alone to merit having been selected in the first place?
I wouldnt select Cuthbert because he seems to be injured. I would be tempted to play Kearney, 1/2p and Zebo for the 1st test and Bowe, 1/2p North for the second.

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
At the moment Guns his selection like Cuthbert is deemed on the lack of fitness/injury of others... thats it.
Can't play Kearney for the above reason. Firstly I would like to see Halfpenny on the wing too (albeit for Hogg)... but it just hasn't been tried and it would be a risk.
Kearney had what 20 mins on Sat? How long has he been off? 20 mins before getting a test match start in a lions test? That would be a massive massive gamble. Just a bit too optimistic IMO.
PS - what did you think of Skelton... all action no and great hands. If he sheds another 10kg he will become quite a player... was on his knees by the end though.

A bit of bias towards players from your own country there? You'd put Kearney in at full back after a 25min sub appearance?!

Kearney has only been injured for the duration of the tour. He played in the Rabo final just before the tour. He is starting against the Brumbies and if he plays well may force his way into the team.
Skelton was good, big hitter. Liked Foley as well. Think he will become a test player in a few years. With a name like that Im sure he has an Irish granny.

It is more a case of Maitland being very average all tour. Visser should have been selected instead and if he was Id happy for him to start ahead of K'dog. He wasnt though and I dont think Maitland, nor Cuthbert (injured?) should be in the test team because they currently are not at the required level.

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
Maitland was chosen over Visser due to being a good player in all departments... he can tackle, he can run. Not the best at either but to a high standard. He also knows the game in the SH very well.. the players, their habits etc.... useful.
For Visser it was either him or Cuthbert... Visser is the superior player IMO but Cuthbert plays in a better side and his head coach and backs coach were the Wales' coaches... it was only ever going to go one way.

Probably Maitlands main job on tour is helping Gatty.
Would any of the other Lions players have been coached by Robbie Deans?

My opinion of Maitland has not gone up and down like a yoyo... Personally I dont think he is good enough to get a test place, and never had..
As for the OP, the same could be said about any player on tour... One minute they are numero uno, then next being slated.
Take Halfpenny. The most consistant on tour, and showed last outing that he can attack as well, but yet, he keep getting tagged with "he's only a kicker" tag.. which is really unfair..
Anyway, now Shane has turned up, neither Maitland or Cuthbert are in the running...

If that was in reply to my post, I know. I was just picking up on AucklandLaurie saying "my cousin plays for Austrailia". I realise it's probably a typo, but was seeing if AL was A) Bragging or B) Maitland himself.

That works both ways - Deans knows everything about Maitland.
Deans' assistant, Tony McGahan will know a lot about most the B+I Lions having spent 6 years with Munster coaching against most of them. Laurie Fisher (formerly with Munster and now the Brumbies forward coach) will also be fairly familiar with the B+I players.

Yes but Gatland doesn't actually have to pick Maitland in the test team to get the benefit of any inside knowledge about Deans' coaching.

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
Considering Deans' started coaching the wallabies in 2008 and Maitland started playing for the Crusaders then, I'm not too sure as to how much insider knowledge Maitland would have on Deans.

I think he missed another one not long after and got a bit caught in no mans land on another break.

Bit unnecessary. I thought you Scots like your stats anyway?
People are allowed to say when they think a player did something wrong. It isn't being overly critical, nor saying I don't rate him. The Welsh often get criticised on here for not allowing fair discussion on their players, but what is the difference now?

Well said.....I'm sure he isn't the only lion on this tour to miss a tackle or two as some like to pin point!

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
I think it was very well said actually!! I don't mind fair discussion but there seems to be a lot of negativity towards Maitland without any real basis, 1 possibly 2 missed tackles and that is it!!

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
You said you thought Maitland has only missed one tackle all season (unlikely anyway, but still) and I pointed out that I thought he missed a couple in that game. It isn't saying that I don't rate him, haven't been impressed with him nor is it saying I wouldn't have him in the 23 on the weekend (with or without North).
A broken record to me would imply that I have been going on about Maitland's errors constantly, when I haven't. So it isn't well said. It hardly offers a productive discussion, nor a counter arguement.

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
I think the broken record comment is more in reference to not just you but a lot of people on here bashing maitland for the missed tackle and nothing else. myself and a few others have come up with a lot of counter arguments but from what i have read there has been no real evidence for all the criticism thrown at Maitland!

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
Before the Lions tour all the posts from the Scottish supporters were pushing Visser (with some justification), I don't remember Maitland being mentioned, now we get he is better than Cuthbert etc, there is little evidence he deserves to be in the squad. Zebo who was not picked in the original squad put some effort in last Sat turning up everywhere, this suggests to me he not Maitland should have been in the original squad.
I accept being on the wing the ball may never go to you but I did not feel comfortably when they were attacking as I believe they knew Maitland was the weak link in the defence and they attacked his side. I have not seen a match report that compliments Maitland's performance.

I think the push for Visser was true at the end of last year but from a Scottish point of view I would say the backing for a wing spot with the Lions swayed more towards Maitland because he is the far better all round player. Visser is a good finisher but his defence is non existent. Maitland is also a great finisher but has a very good defence to go with it. The coaches and fans have lost patience with Visser and that is why he isn't in the starting line up now for Scotland!

Re: Why the Maitland bashing?
Interesting to see Guscott's Lions team. Warburton out and Maitland on the right wing. I still think Gatland rates Maitland more than Cuthbert, so time will tell. Guess Cuthbert gets the nod if Doc and Tuilagi are fit for an extra bit of bosh (particularly if North doesn't make it).

You want mistakes? If you could wait for a week or two I'd give you a raft of them - from O'Driscoll, North, Carter, McCaw, Wilkinson, you name the star and I'd find a host of mistakes.
If you're a player who has never made a mistake you're probably Mike Poole making another faultless compilation clip.
Missed the replies to that post you quoted. Makes more sense why George had his wee tantrum now.
Yeah Secret, I get that everybody makes mistakes and that. I'm just saying that youtube clips are designed to show highlights (obviously the Mike Poole one was a bit of a joke). I bet there's a YouTube clip with Cuthbert looking the real deal scoring tries for fun etc (at international level to).
I don't know what's wrong with offering a discussion on here nowadays. Haven't even been overly critical about him and even said I rate him and that.
