Most Overrated bands ever
Thought I would post to get people’s opinions on the most over rated bands ever. Sure I will get slated for this but will get the ball rolling with two I think fit the bill. The first is Coldplay. The appeal of these is completely lost on me. Lyrically they are nonsensical, absolute meaningless phrases dressed up as depth and tunes that are little more than dirges. Also you should never trust a bloke that does not drink in any walk of life but when that person is a rock star he really should be banned from making music.
The second one is probably going to get me slaughtered on here but has to be Oasis. Don’t get me wrong they are an alright band but they do not in any way shape or form deserve the adulation they frequently receive. Definitely Maybe is a good album, What’s the Story is alright in patches but after this they are pretty much unlistenable. Musically they are luddites, no ambition to expand or experiment with their sound, just went on producing weak facsimiles of their earlier glory.

In regards to Oasis, I think Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds are much better, I wish Noel had left Liam much earlier. The difference in quality between NGHFB and Beady Eye show where the real talent in Oasis was...

Admittedly near enough every Coldplay song is, as Peter Griffin says, "whiny bullcrap" but I quite like them because they're different. I can't stand Chris Martin prancing about the stage when he sings live though, he just looks like a prat. They were better in the early 00s too.
I would rattle off band after band that I don't like and why but I'm sure you people have better things to do than listen to my rantings I really don't like Daft Punk though, just song after song of repetitive nonsense.

Recently I think Mumford and Sons are overrated, really not a fan of that silly banjo/mandolin "hipster" rubbish. All their songs sound identical, and although they have a couple of good songs, Little Lion Man for example, I do think they're hugely overrated.

I also don't think it's possible for Coldplay to be overrated since they are almost always widely criticised.

I second Oasis. I actually like Coldplay's later stuff (well, mostly Viva La Vida the album). Their old stuff was as repetitive as it was whiny

Were Franz Ferdinand ever rated? Or Razorlight? They were terrible, terrible bands. I presume Razorlight were so named because the only thing listening to a whole album of their coma-inducing dross was preferable to was having a razor shoved into both pupils

I love Oasis and frequently listen to their albums of which I have every one. Be Here Now is my favourite. However, I am not going to bore everybody with my arguments for them, I fully appreciate why people would feel they are overrated.
I feel Kings Of Leon are overrated. I have never understood the hype they get. The songs just aren't very good imo.
U2 is another I feel is very overrated, very average songs by a below average band.

The first Kings of Leon album is pretty good. Subsequent albums have seen them descend into U2 territory.
Speaking of which, U2 are ridiculously overrated. An occasional semi decent song here and there but mostly pompous, MOR dad rock.

I agree with absolutely everything in this post except in my opinion, they have no good songs because they only have 1 song that is constantly rearranged

I also like both Mumford and U2. Mumford are quite samey, but the harmonies differ quite a lot. U2 have written some mediocre stuff but also some of the only passable songs of the 90s

Fear not CJ, I also like Mumford and Sons. I love thier music, and figure at least they are talented enough to play their own instruments unlike most of the complete hacks in the charts nowadays manufactured through these interminable and diabolical reality shows. THe sound that Munford get without a full time drummer is pretty unbelievable.

At the risk of receiving considerable flak - the Beatles are, for my money, more than a little overrated. One great album in Rubber Soul and half a great album in Abbey Road (second side is brilliant) but other than a few decent songs here and there, that's it.

By the music critics, it's Radiohead for me. Being 'experimental' doesn't always equal greatness in my book.

I could weep.
Not even impressed a little by 'Revolver', Superfly? Basically the middle ground between the folk-feeling Rubber Soul and the more prog rock Abbey Road, for me, so best of both worlds.
Anyway, overrated bands. Pink Floyd for me, first and foremost. I'm not totally blind to some of their good stuff (I was much more impressed with 'Wish You Were Here' than I was with 'The Wall' and 'Dark Side...') but I'm just not quite sure how they've acquired such a giant reputation or amassed as many sales as they have. It's a shocking cliché, I know, but I guess I just don't really 'get' them.
I love The Smiths, but to a degree I think they're slightly overrated in a wider sense, or maybe a more accurate way to put it is that some of their really obsessive fans tend to overstate how important they've been in 'shaping' alternative music today. A lot of Smiths fans I know do seem to carry a bit of a superiority complex and like to pretend that it takes a truly deep, hyper-intelligent person and nothing less to really understand or appreciate the band, which gets on my nerves a bit. The likes of 'Panic' and 'Girlfriend in a Coma' aren't "masterpieces" no matter how hard they try to convince me otherwise!
Oh, and the Happy Mondays. Simply because they were rubbish.

Re: Most Overrated bands ever
I think the Beatles are always going to end up being a little overrated, I like them, but I don't think their music is particularly extraordinary. However, it's hard for me to ever really appreciate it properly because I have the hindsight of everything after the Beatles.
I agree that The Smiths are overrated as well, I should like them, they do fit my music taste quite well, but I just find them very difficult to listen to. I like "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" and probably would like a couple more if I could be bothered to look for them, but in general I find them quite hard to listen to. I think they're to music what Stewart Lee is to comedy, not quite mainstream but have fanatical fans and the biggest thing in common, as demonstrated in this thread...anybody who criticises them isn't "clever" enough to get it.

I love Coldplay! Xylo miloto, was kind of... strange, but it had a few decent songs, I felt Death and All his friends was... bipolar, some very good songs mixed with downright "huh" moments. X & Y is probably my favourite Coldplay album. I also dont drink, in any walk of life, so maybe that has something to do with it.
Kings of Leon are strange, it took me nearly two months before I began to like Come Around Sundown. But eventually I broke through the Hillbilly vibes and found a pretty enjoyable album.
Mumford & Suns though, are gawd awful. One of my mates loves them. They are like just horrid, wouldnt recommend them to my greatest enemy!

New Order - It was quite trendy to like them back in the day but to me, their music is just plain Boring.
The Stone Roses - Good, oh yes, but most of their songs sound the same. Most of my friends were not big fans of theirs when they were first around, but deem it cool to go on about them like they are the best thing since sliced bread. A good band, maybe very good, but definitely overrated.

Re: Most Overrated bands ever
The Beatles definitely enjoy a reputation in excess of their purely musical heritage because of their popularity at the time. Some good songs, and they did show the way in progressing from 2.5 minute pop songs to more interesting and experimental stuff, but they also went down a few blind alleys and recorded some absolute pap (I am the walrus, I am the egg man, coo coo cachoo...). Oh, and Macca can't sing any more.
Oh, and I agree absolutely about The Smiths - I'm exactly of the age where they were the big thing, yet I could never really get past how whiney Morrissey's voice was. Some good lyrics at times, but not the gods of pop-rock that some of their fans at the time and since try to proclaim.
Can I also nominate The Sex Pistols. Nothing they did musically was particularly significant, while the whole punk scene really only existed in the inner cities, particularly London, and had very little impact on the rest of the country.

Think with the Pistols it is more what they signified than their actual music, which I agree to an extent does not exactly stand the test of time. Music had become very worthy and tediously self important in the seventies. A bunch of art students making 42 minute prog rock songs on obscure characters from Tolkien. The Sex Pistols put a bit of a foot through all that and reminded people that at its best rock and roll tends to be working class and that you did not have to have done 8 years at art school to get there.
Also The Smiths are frigging awesome.

I think The Beatles are by far the best band ever.....................When geniuses like Brian Wilson and others credit them as inspiration you know you are onto a winner......Be proud of them they are acknowledged as the best band ever and British......
Geez just look at some of their solo stuff.............Harrison's oh sweet Lord..........Lennon's Imagine and Woman..........Mccartney's pipes of peace and Ebony and you see the huge talent...........Obviously they had to carry the wally on the drums...
I could listen to Sgt pepper all day.............wonderful....and as for Abbey road....
Certainly not overrated.............Love also... The Kinks, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Clash and early Genesis also...........
No one does rock like the Brits...........Great heritage.............
Although we are better at everything else!!

Earth wind and fire were the greatest band ever along with foxy and the experience real music none of this mop top, chirpy, shake and shout rubbish by the Beatles and the like. They were famous for the same reason 1 direction are famous. Just boy's playing music although John Lennon was the true talent and a great musician.

My point was that its the same formula. Get 3 or 4 decent looking lads and hay presto you have a boy band. Cue lots of screaming young lunatic girls and no end of publicity and you get my drift don't you.
Musically however its another story. I have impecible musical taste and yet I don't have a single Beatles tune on my I pod. My music varies from rock to soul to classical but only real artists get into my i-pod.

I should have said earlier I am a moderate Beatles fan - my point is that they are over-rated because no-one has ever been as good as their hyped reputation makes them.
Agree about The Kinks being the forgotten geniuses of their time - overshadowed now in the public consciousness by the Beatles (because of popularity) and Stones (notoriety and longevity) but purveyors of some of the finest pop and rock tunes around and with the genius of Ray Davies's very down to earth lyrics.

The Rolling stones are a real band to be proud of. There original music is deep rooted in the blues as was Clapton and many other great artists. The Beatles was mearly pots and pans music just pop nothing with any substance.
