Re: Rank these Golfers
Mac - it was a quick search I did at the time, just sampled the owgr twice a year (middle and end of year), so that plot misses some of the details inbetween, obviously...

Re: Rank these Golfers
Thanks for those stats.
It's interesting that Harrington was ahead of Westwood in the OWGR the entire time from 2002 until early 2010 and at least 90% of this time was spent inside the Top 10.
McLaren - Westwood is currently No 12 in the rankings. Do you think that makes him one of the best in the world right now? If so, you can't possibly have any difficulty with recognising Harrington as one of the best in the world for 8 successive years when he held a similar ranking or better. A long way from one good summer, isn't it?

One thing is certain. Harrington is the worst three time major winner ever.

Great analysis pd. Gives some kudos to PH. Only his RC record is dodgy.

Re: Rank these Golfers
I guess we've done "who's the worst major winner ever". But who's the worst WGC winner? Or OOM winner? Kevin Sutherland? Robert Karlsson?

Any trick to opening princedrac's "spoliers"? Never had a problem before.
PS: Big Karlsson fan here! As good as anyone in the world towards the end of 2008, then afflicted with health issues.

Not working? Seems to work ok for me... but I wouldn't be surprised if for some it doesn't work.
As I said earlier, I have to do all sorts of messing about to get the pics linked in. Before it was all straightforward...
Whoever made changes to this software needs to do a fixing job very quickly, there are bugs everywhere now...

For some reason it now works. Now I feel like I'm going blind.
Nice graphs pd - Thanks.
navyblueshorts, Barragan, Any comments regarding the software changes??

Re: Rank these Golfers
Mac...you complete stirrer...good thread
I think I've said before I'd rather have my name on the Claret jug than at the top of the page in a stats book...but thats just me and my opinion isn't really any measure of greatness. That being said, winning a major does bring with it an elevation in status, whether 1 major counterbalances n OOM titles, hmmm maybe not, WN1 hmmm how many weeks over what period of time? 3 majors though, you seriously cant argue with...
What other criteria are we factoring in? Entertainment factor? shot making ability? consistency? personality? bottle? all round game? Bouncebackability?
So...
Harrington (3 Majors...simples)
Monty (best never to win a major - had the talent to win at least 3, call it (lack of) luck, bottle, whatever)
McDowell, Rose (Major in the bag and they are still capable of winning more - both have bottle)
Donald (WN1 and top of both money lists in same year - can still win a major)
Clarke (Great to see him comeback to win a major way after his peak - never say never)
Westwood (Frustrating - should be higher up the list as the talent is there, needs to convert more)
Lawrie (detest him being called a "lucky" Major winner - he deserved it, sneaky good RC record too)
Poulter (take his RC record away and really...what's he done? )
Casey (where is he now? what happened to that huge potential?)

What's Poulter done? Well two more WGC's than Westwood for a start.

Ah...Fair point. I think Westwood does flatter to deceive. Was he actually that consistently good to be WN1 or was it a lucky quirk of the rankings? I've thought for a while he could/should win a biggie or 2 but the raw facts are....he hasn't.

Re: Rank these Golfers
To be fair Poultrys second WGC was an utter damp squib. When the worlds top 2 players can't be bothered to turn up you have to accept its really not being taken very seriously at all.

Re: Rank these Golfers
This is a good thread, but you're not really comparing like with like. It's not til these players are retired that you can look back at their achievements (or lack) and assess them fairly.
With 3 majors in the bag, you have to rank Paddy at the top of the list, but who's to say what McDowell or Rose will do over the next 10 years? Both of them could easily end up with 3 majors each.
