Post by Gcass Wed 19 Jun 2013 - 12:24

Right, onto match 5 of the qualifying round. But first of all I can announce that the first four superstars going through to the last 16 are:

Rey Mysterio
Jeff Hardy
Jamie Noble
Eddie Guerrero

The following wrestlers are pitted against each other in match 5.

Paul London - Paul London won an exciting 8-Man Cruiserweight Battle Royal to become new Cruiserweight Champion, last eliminating former tag team partner Billy Kidman. Chavo Guerrero, the former champ, had his fate sealed when all seven competitors immediately tossed Guerrero from the ring.

Mike Sanders - After gaining Kevin Nash as a 'coach', Sanders beat Elix Miller in a handicap power bomb match. Sanders was also the WCW 'commissioner' at the time.

Crash Holly - Known for his greatness in the hardcore division, Crash Holly made a leap over to the light heavyweight ranks when he defeated Dean Malenko for the Light Heavyweight Championship on March, 15, 2001. Crash held the title until April 2001 when he lost it to former ECW standout Jerry Lynn on the Sunday Night HEAT prior to the Backlash pay-per-view.

Disco Inferno - The precursor to Faaaaaaaaannnnnddddaaaaannnnggggoooo (who says that WWE rehash old storylines?). After WCW awarded Psicosis the Cruiserweight Championship on Oct. 4, 1999, the new champ went straight to work defending the gold. Unfortunately for Psicosis, he would only have one title defense, as Disco Inferno quickly snatched the Cruiserweight Championship from him. Disco went on to successfully defend the championship against Lash LeRoux at Halloween Havoc before eventually losing it to Evan Karagias.

Taka Michinoku - ED's favourite. Taka only held the title on one occasion. In the finals of an exciting tournament to name the first-ever WWE Light Heavyweight Champion, Taka Michinoku defeated Brian Christopher. Michinoku went on to hold the title for more than 10 months before losing to Christian.

Spike Dudley - Rey Mysterio put his Cruiserweight Championship on the line against Spike Dudley on an edition of SmackDown! Spike was able to pick up the win, but it was due largely in part to some outside interference from his brothers Bubba Ray and D-Von. Spike went on to hold the title for nearly five months, but was dethroned by one of the most unlikeliest of challengers - SmackDown!'s No. 1 announcer, Funaki.

Over to you, comments would be appreciated.

I can't believe these 6 goofballs made it through into their own qualifying round! They're filler guys at best. Who came up with the seedings? Jushin Liger doesn't make it to the tournament proper because he's grouped with Hardy and Mysterio, whilst Eddie as good as gets a bye with the selection he's put up against. Sure, he'll end up winning it, but lets not make it easy for him. When's Dynamite Kid coming in? Or will he get grouped with Tiger Mask, Mystico and Hayabusa?

There were no seedings, all the wrestlers were drawn at random into the eight groups. As mentioned in the first match, all the participating wrestlers are taken from the WCW and WWE Light Heavyweight/Cruiserweight championship lists dating back to 1991.

I'VE GONE FOR TAKA MICHINOKU!

I thought the division roundabout the time of that Light Heavyweight tournament was in superb shape, with the likes of Brian Christopher and Essa Rios, and Taka was deservedly crowned the first ever champion of that division. It's a damn shame that the division kind of died a death not long after, and Taka was resigned to a joke in Kai-En-Tai that got pretty unfunny pretty quickly. He was a superb talent, and deserved better than that.

Keep scratching Kid Vicious, I'm more than happy for you to create an alternative poll. It has only taken me several hours a day for the last few days, next time I'll try harder just for you!

It's greatest champion isn't it? Not greatest of all time

Dynamite Kid didn't win the lightheavyweight/cruiserweight title, Gillberg did

Thanks Marsh, yes it is (as mentioned in the title). I did mention in the first match I believe that it was just for the WCW/ WWE versions of the title.

Your skewing your results that's all. Another tournament for Eddie to win. Sure, he was good, but that untimely death sure sprinkled his legacy with fairy dust. If he was to win after people have dismissed some top cruiser weights over the years, fair enough, but this tournament is kinda like saying, "Who's the greatest wrestler ever? CM Punk, Big Bully Busick, Mantaur, Man Mountain Rock or PN News?!" Punk wins, he's the greatest, confirmed!!

I'd be skewing the results if I'd have said 'greatest ever light heavyweight/cruiserweight ever regardless of if they've ever held a title ever and going back to 50 BC' and included the lists I have.

However, as I didn't want the polls to go on ad infinitum (like others) I qualified from the word go by saying 'champions' (it's in the title) and stating in the first match that these polls were for champions dating back to 1991 from WCW/WWE.

Personally, I don't think Eddie was the best of the bunch and I find it insulting to be accused of skewing the results so that he can win another poll. I wrote down each of the champions on the list and drew the names at random for each group. I had thought about going down the seeding route, but frankly I don't have the time.

I think it does what it says on the tin Gcass, when I ran the WWE/F Wrestling G.O.A.T. I set the perimeter of it being based from the first Wrestlemania.

Surely the results would be skewed if a Greatest Champion list included people who hadn't been champion, but the rganiser thought was good?

It would be like me doing a Greatest World Champion list but including Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts as I thought they were better then some of the champions.

The article does say greatest champion KV, if you don't like it don't vote, I also personally that Eddy is an ATG, its a shame Liger didn't get through but luck of the draw put him with Rey and he's much more associated with the IWGP J Heavyweight title that the ones we are voting on, which was my rational for voting for Rey

Taka for this round for me, very underrated wrestler

Devising, and then invigilating a whole tournament, just so Eddie Guerrero can be crowned the winner.... well... it's sick is what it is.

OK, some answers. I don't get the 1991 thing. That was a short lived belt. The WCW Light Heavyweight Championship had about as much to do with the later Cruiserweight Championship as WWF's Junior Heavyweight title (which my man Dynamite DID win) had to do with their Light Heavyweight version of the late 1990's. A belt which incidentally, was a joke.

The qualifying criteria should go back to 1996. If old and long since retired titles are to be considered then both the old WCW version, and WWF version should make the cut, not just one.

I will not be part of the Eddie Guerrero love fest.

The parameters I set for this poll are just that, the parameters I set. If you don't like it KV, you don't have to vote and I promise that I won't make you.

The criteria I used was the WCW and WWF/E Cruiserweight/Light Heavyweight titles, I went back to 1991 because all the lists that I researched for the WCW version went back to 1991. These lists also ensured that (more by luck than judgement) that there was a pretty even split for the qualifying rounds. It was also to appeal to the wider masses on this board.

Granted, some of the qualifying 'matches' have been talent heavy/light. That unfortunately is the luck of the draw. I can assure you that this poll hasn't been set up for the benefit of Eddie Guerrero, however if he wins he wins.

KV, if you don't like the way I've run this then I can't help that. I've run it this way as it made sense to me. As you clearly aren't happy with it, why don't you run your own 'greatest ever Light Heavy/Cruiser' competition regardless of titles upon the conclusion of this competition? I'd be more than happy to vote and comment constructively.

BTW, the greatest ever wrestler quite clearly isn't any of those you mentioned above. It is obviously Hulk Hogan or John Cena.............
