Well Done JD
We all forget to give pat on the backs, especially when the blood boils over incidents like Horwill's "alleged" stamping on AWJ. But please dont go into that on this thread as it defeats the object.
I just wanted to say well done and a big pat on the back to Jonathan Davies for his utmost sportsman ship and showing that rugby players (on the whole) are still, in my opionion, up the top when it comes to principals of sportsmanship.
I refer to and quote...
"Davies a true sportsman
The human touch. The adrenalin was flowing just before kick-off on Saturday. Both teams were pumped and ready for action. Within 52 seconds debutant Wallaby centre Christian Leali’ifano was out cold on the turf after his head struck Jonathan Davies’s hip. The action moved on, yet Davies saw immediately that his opposite number was in trouble, all spaced out with his pupils staring upwards. Davies stayed with him and made sure the referee called a halt to play. Good man" - By Mick Cleary, Rugby Union Correspondent, in Brisbane

Although the artical is about Horwill's citing, I felt the last paragraph complimenting JDs sportsmanship was worth bringing to the top.
Feel free to comment or list other rugby players who have demonstrated why we love this game, but please leave the disciplines and bad events for other threads, as I would like to think this can promote the guys in a better light.

One one hard, great sportsmanship and the great comradeship which the heart of Rugby. Exactly the type of behaviour we should want to display to the world.
On the other hand, it would be absolutely shocking if anyone in JD's position would have done any different. In Rugby this is the norm, right?

To be honest I think it's the same in any sport. It's basic human decency.doctor_grey wrote:On the other hand, it would be absolutely shocking if anyone in JD's position would have done any different. In Rugby this is the norm, right?

One would hope so, certainly.

Though players who obviously look after the injured player this way do often get lauded for it, I suppose it would be easy to miss the gravity of the injury in the heat of the game. Danny Care got a lot of respect for a similar thing when Morgan Stoddart was injured

I hope you are right. I probably have a dimmer view of human nature.

+1.
Off the top of my head, I can remember Tana Umaga doing the same for Colin Charvis back in the early 00's, I hope there's a few more (I say few, because players being completely knocked out should itself be a passing rare event )

Re: Well Done JD
True Cyril (and Dr Grey), but unfortuanatly it isnt alway the case.
However, "bad" events always get publicised, yet the positives get overlooked.
Hence, this thread, which hopefully will star reflecting on some positives and true sportsmen (and women of course).
And to add to the "pat on the back" award, lets not forget Danny Care not only calling for the game to stop but putting himself over Morgan Stoddard to protect him when he had that terrible ankle break in the Eng v Wales RWC warm up game. Real sportmanship there as he used himself as a sheild for Stoddard... Not a fan of Danny Care (how can I be he's an English scrum-half ) but for this act of selfless sportsmanship, good on you Danny.. well done.

I prefer to believe that most human beings are decent people at heart. Living among a shoot first, ask questions later society as you do, plus having been an army medic you see the worst of human nature, but also at times the very best when people rise above the doodoo to do the decent thing.
Sadly "bad things" sells newspapers and news channels. "Good things" are ignored.

This is absolutely bang on and very saddening. Also, good things are frankly the norm, generally, and the norm is never interesting. If you just read the newspapers you'd think the UK was a dystopia, the NHS systematically killed off patients and no referee has ever fairly refereed a match of rugby against a British team ever

Wow amazing!
all the biased, xenophobic tripe that gets typed on this site and is allowed to stay yet you can't mention Umaga, BOD and 2005 in the same sentence!
But well done JD.

Tana Umaga was exceptional when Charvis got knocked out, I remember him not only calling for assistance, but putting Charvis in the recovery position too. I believe he was awarded the Chwarae Teg (fair play) award by S4C for it.

Because that would derail this 'good sportsmanship' thread. And I believe that in the OP posters were asked to leave out misdemeanours like that.

You can't always get what you want in life, whilst I applaud what Umaga did for Colin I will never forgive him for that BOD incident, I won't mention it again.

Re: Well Done JD
Good way of putting it and I suppose you are right. I certainly did not want to diminish JD's actions which were 100% worthy of praise and respect. Should be normal, but sadly isn't always. And you are also right merde sells, and sportsmanship and citizenship doesn't.LondonTiger wrote:doctor_grey wrote:I hope you are right. I probably have a dimmer view of human nature.

As JFK said: Ask not what your country can do for you, rather what you can do for your country. Applies to all life, really.

2003 World Cup. Who was the All Black prop who eased off when Ben Darwin shouted "Neck!". Regarded at the time as fine sportsmanship.

Kees Meuws - he basically held the scrum up until everyone had disengaged
