frankie gavin vs denton vassell, finally the step up comes
this fight will be on the undercard of price vs thompson. frankie gavin was once highly touted (especially by the sky team) as the next big thing, he had some great achievements as an amateur. he has stalled a bit and put in a few poor performances (woodhouse was robbed with the SD imo) and has stayed at WW even though most around him felt LWW or even LW would be better for him. that said he has shown capable enough to get past the likes of witter, lomax and mcintyre.
vassell is another great fighter, but has had problems out of the ring, and not been active enough to build any momentum, but hopefully thats changed. coming of a win over unbeaten prospect heffron and looking good doing so, i think he has what it takes to beat gavin.
great fight, for 2 unbeaten prospects with the british and commonwealth (and i think it would mean a londsdale belt for gavin) belts on the line should provide the welter weight division with another british contender, and possibly future opponents for brook or khan.
who wins in your opinion?

How frustrating has Gavin's career been? Talk about drawn out.... He's still a young man but all that stop, start lack of inactivity might have set him back.
Should be a good fight, Gavin by UD if he's on his game.

your fight tommy, sooner than i thought. gavin has really frustrated, i hope he isn't going to go down a similar path to kevin mitchell, another wasted talent. i don't know if he is lazy, suffers injuries or what else but he hasn't really shined so far.
this fight should be a good indicator as he needs to be 100% on his game, as vessell is no mug, and i think he may go on to bigger things if his injurys don't plague him.

Yea its tomorrow whereas price-Thompson is next Saturday
It is a step up but I have the feeling that Vassel will win this. Gavin can look good in spurts but has never looked like a welterweight to me and has looked very pedestrian at time. Vassell is hard to hit really clean and while he doenst have real power he can throw a lot of punches with speed and is tough as nails so will really lay it on Gavin and imo he could outwork Frankie

i didn't see gavins last fight, but vassell looked really sharp. i think he may also prove to have the better stamina on the night, and take over late on.

Vassell looks worthy rather than classy to me, I think Gavin will beat him with something to spare if he turns up fully focused and fit.

Good stuff will watch. Going for Gavin UD. Although he has been very disappointing since turning pro. Be interesting to see how far he gets. He seems to lack real determination.

Re: frankie gavin vs denton vassell, finally the step up comes
Despite both men being unbeaten this is abit of a crossroads fight.
I look at Gavin and find myself thinking "How much do you really want it" when I look at Vassell I don;t ask the same question.
I think vassell outpowers, outworks and outhearts him to a SD.
I can see this one dividing the public and the judges, I expect the crisper work to come from Gavin as a schooled and decorated amateur, but work rate and aggression I expect to see Vassell have a clear edge.
This will be a real contrast of styles - very excited for it.

Gavin tore him up a bit in that 1st round. 20-18 Gavin so far. I wonder how his gas tank will hold out if Vassell settles down.

Vassell looks quite stiff and rusty. I've got it 30-27 Gavin.

Big finish for Vassell won him the round for me. Got it 4-1 Gavin, but he looks like he's feeling the effects already.

This is the best I've ever seen Gavin
He's made it a bit of a stinker but is using his height, reach and speed advantages well

Broken jaw it looks like, his face blew up and his mouth was full of blood
Gavin won all expect one round and was crisp and elusive throughout and was always on top

He's just so boring though... He has nothing between the ears.
Same with Anthony Joshua, boring to the extreme. Fair play to the lad though, finally knuckling down and reaching his potential.

Nothing between the ears? I don't give a damn if he knows much about Fibonacci, Magritte or Miller. Frankie has a very good boxing brain.

I like my boxers to be engaging inside and outside the ring. I enjoy the build up to fights and Gavin will sadly never generate any interest.

Re: frankie gavin vs denton vassell, finally the step up comes
I thought Gavin showed some great skills tonight - he reminds me a bit of Joe Calzaghe the way he has his hands down and throws from his waist. he obviously carries a decent dig though. Feel a bit gutted for Vassell, but he'll come again, and Gavin was a man apart tonight, picking his shots beautifully.

Did anyone see Murray Nailor on the undercard. This Nailor kid came is with a 20% winning record, but for me he outclassed the undefeated Murray ripping him with hard body shots and leaving him gassing at the end of the fight. I gave Murray 1,2 &7 and Nailor the rest, although some of the rounds were close I was surprised to see a 78-75 score to Murray from the ref. Thought Murray was the most overrated fighter I've seen for a while. Interested to hear other thoughts, disagreements or agreements.

Re: frankie gavin vs denton vassell, finally the step up comes
Despite the Zero, Vassell wasn't a step up from some of Gavin's previous opponents.
Vassel can come again but he's not going to improve and he'll not go beyond domestic level, even so, he's a credit to the sport: a dedicated trier with a great engine. I wish him luck.
There's not many in the sport, at any weight, a better 'boxer' than Gavin. His skills are World Class. I wish him luck and hope he doesn't waste his ability and fulfills his potential.

On the topic of last nights action, it appears to me that Paul Butler is being overhyped in typical Boxnaton fashion.

He's not a bad fighter, but the quality of opposition was game but there to be beaten as a late sub.
I've never seen the Agrentinian WBO champ fight - could be if he's an old 37 Butler could do him, only lost once though to Nonito Donaire, and his record suggests he is a decent operator. If they want to bring him over to the UK I'd imagine if Navarez is being advised by anyone with half a brain it'll cost an astronomical sum.
