First topic message reminder :

He knocks over 50/55m kicks for fun, all game every game.

Imagine 2 rare misses that cost you..

a) place in the world cup final (50m)
b) rare famous lions series win (55m ish?)

The guy is class and it must be awful to stomach but what annoyed me today was his run up was pathetic. You really need to run an extra yard or two when attempting to welly a kick that far.

Coincidentally those two kicks are the only kicks where I've seen him fail on distance and not accuracy, those plus the cross bar penalty early in the match.

Agree doc no point blaming any one player - its a team game.
And I definitely don't feel sorry for a young man getting paid lots of $ to play the game he loves for his nation(s) overseas. He'll get over it.

Ok how about the one that missed 1 kick to Halfpenny's 4?

The one that took three less shots? Who knows if he wouldn't have had the yips had he taken equal kicks.

But I thought you don't relative values? So you don't like percentages. Don't like absolute values. Just go with the gut? Halfpenny is a better kick cuz ee's the dogs.

Figures often don't tell a whole story, as I've shown with the three less kicks attempted. No need to be a child.

Yeah I was blaming Halfpenny as much as putting the use of the word 'routine' into context. If its accepted that Halfpenny puts the same kicks away 'routinely' in practice then missing it by so much can only be explained by pressure. What other explanation is there? Routine means easy, straightforward.
For me it wasnt routine. Had it gone over it would have been spectacular and in all honesty no one can say they expected it to go over.

He should have at least been asked if he could reach it, and if not should have declined in the best interests of the side and the win.

Just because he gets kicks just as far elsewhere- he hadnt that day on that field, with that ball.

If Halfpenny considered all that, then took the kick on 100% confidently then thats fine. If he followed orders and took it even though he had grave doubts about it going over, then he will have let himself and the team down.

Only he will know this, and there is no one else to consider here. Big matches require big decisons, and this was Halfpenny's to make, NO ONE elses.

But BOD had already said posts, hadn't he? That meant Halfpenny's opinion on whether or not he had the distance was moot. As I understand it, you can't change your mind once you've said you're going to kick for goal.

I must ask Chris Robshaw to clarify it for me.

Once the decision has been indicated to the referee it cannot be changed. Although it doesn't specify exactly what this means (although it does use the example of the kicking tee coming onto the pitch, remember the Wales try against Argentina that shouldn't have been allowed?) I'd say the captain telling the ref would count.

I am not a huge rugby fan but having been to a couple of the games on this tour I have developed huge respect for Halfpenny.  No matter what the sport it is great to see someone perform to such an unbelievable standard.

His first one from the same side was only just inside the half and must have been at least 52m.

Yes, has been pretty good atmosphere at the games. Certainly better than going to murrayfield with its posho morningside types.

I was meant to go to all three tests but couldnt get time off work. Soooooo annoyed.

Is rugby anymore more posh/elitist than golf in Scotland? Genuine question.

Rugby seems to be watched by people who wear barber jackets and send their kids to private schools.

Barber jackets? Nothing wrong with that, in fact Hibbard could do with befriending one of them to get himself sorted.

I feel so sorry for Halfpenny too. Andy Murray is now a safe bet for the BBC sports personality of the year award.

To talk of Halfpenny losing his bottle is sheer daft. Kickers miss it's as simple as that, the one in the 2nd test was within his range and people who watch UK rugby more would know this.

Halfpenny best kicker and fullback in the world bar none now.

MMMM - no matter what ANY sportsman does in the UK now no one will get the BBC POTY off Murray lol

Lions will get team of the year and if the is a coach / manager award Warran would get it I imagine. After 77 years of zero male winners at strawberry and creameville no one will budge Murray from that award.
