What are the Lions for?
What legacy should a Lions tour leave?
There is the record of W's and L's in the record books and a few reputations enhanced or reduced, but there are no ranking points, no changes in the world order. There is the money it earns for the host nation and the raised profile of Rugby all around. What there is also now more than ever is records of individual moments captured on youtube in particular. I think people will more and more remember moments rather the results. People will remember Folau's debut and North's try more than the result of the first test.
If you think about raising the profile of rugby what you need is exciting entertaining matches. I really believe for the Lions winning is less important than creating a great spectacle. I cant help thinking that if the Lions lost the last test 45-35 with people being able to say things like ' Wow wasnt 36 an inspired choice - his pass to Zebo for his hat trick was just amazing'. would do a lot more for rugby and the Lions future than an uninspired, bosh bosh 9-8 victory
Lets face it - the biggest thing to come out of the second test was North running for 3 seconds with a ball and an Australian on his shoulders. Its fun - but memories should be made of more than this.

When you've lost the past three tours....
WINNING IS EVERYTHING.
In the professional era....
WINNING IS EVERYTHING.
When you only play this country every 12 years...
WINNING IS EVERYTHING.

Don't be daft. Money is everything. Then winning (because it makes more money).

Rugby wins if the games are entertaining
Rugby wins if all four nations feel they are contributing something and the fans can come together
Coming together in heroic failure isnt the worst result

If that's the case I'd prefer we just didn't bother with the Lions.

I have devised the true purpose of the B & I Lions is to provide an opportunity for B & I supporters to savage each other outsider of the 6 nations and Heineken Cup.

But love each other as brothers when on tour with the Lions. A religious devotion of the highest order and the greatest satisfaction. Which is why I attend most tours. Wish i was there for this one too. I need salvation granted every 4 years, by 40,000 or 50,000 of my brothers and sisters.......blackcanelion wrote:I have devised the true purpose of the B & I Lions is to provide an opportunity for B & I supporters to savage each other outsider of the 6 nations and Heineken Cup.

True. Wifes English, Friends and Relatives from all of the nations. Love the supporters, love the atmosphere. Been on 2 tours (all local), all great.

The Lions is an excellent brand for extracting pound notes from gullible well-heeled NH fans. It is a great tour for supporters but very bad for NH rugby.

Would fill the team with English players if the Lions were touring NZ this year instead as they are the only ones who have any experience beating the ABs?
