Has Gatland gone for the right combinators?
Confession time: there is no substance to this thread whatsoever, I've just always wanted to use the word 'combinators' in a title, and at last found my chance! So, in the interests of adding some lightheartedness to what has been a fairly tough few days for the board, any other fond memories of past posts that just make you want to giggle?

Gatland has not even gone for the right rugby players, never mind combinators, whatever they are.

Combinators????
You've spent too long down in the West Country Asbo! Aren't those the things The Wurzels used to sing about?
Thanks for the though!

Sorry WPI, I honestly don't wish for the title to be taken seriously. The word 'combinators' was used by a highly esteemed, presumed Eastern European, former poster, and it always made I larf!

One of my faves (back on old 606) was when somebody (I'm sure it was either bluesman or rugbyshrink) posted that they were having a wee dram. However they posted:
I'm enjoying a nice, single male.

I still laugh when I think about the final days of the old 606. Historians looking to research the fall of Rome/Jerusalem/Berlin can all look back at the pages created in those final days of lawlessness and wanton madness and get all the insight that they need in to the human mind.
A frightening frightening place.

Past posts that make/made me giggle?
Not good with memory things.... can't remember them but:
I have to say I had much more fun on the old 606 where...................... censorship ....was less censorious.
Yes, you had complete idiots (kinda entertaining in their own way actually) but if you wanted to, you could just ignore them - as you still can here people (friendly advice)
But you also had many more 'characters' who were so good at wumming that it was an art form. They knew what buttons to press and what levers to pull. If it's done crudely and is genuinely personally hurtful, that's not wumming, that's just abuse. But if it's delightfully satiric and creative and if people catch onto it and it rolls, they were some of the funniest moments I've had...two or three professional wummers sword fighting and loving every minute of it.
There was a certain guy...can't remember his name, who shamelessly did the Landed Gentry role, who allegedly despised the underlings from the extremities of the Realm. He was a hoot, and often had some usual hotheads foaming at the mouth as he waffled on in his stately, haughty and lovely caricature of a Gentelman English cad.

He was so transparent and bombastic in what he was doing, and yet so consistently successful! The Borat of the old 606; presenting a comically exaggerated version of a stereotype and letting his victims hoist themselves on their own petard.

And of course there was the continuous shock of big Phil Vickery retiring just when you never expected him too. Glad to see he's finally decided to play on for one more year though.

Re: Has Gatland gone for the right combinators?
A blast from the past:
england expects!
International England
by kingofthesaxons (U13795109) 07 November 2009
arise proud englishmen and gird your loins for battle!
in the name of lord kitchener, stand fast.
today we take the first step on the road to world cup glory.
today we show the rugby world the true power of 15 englishmen, tall and strong.
today the rugby world will stand agape, as the mighty lord johnson of leicester reveals the full extent of his enormous rugby genius.
i am quivering in anticipation along with millions of my countrymen.
to be english today is to be blessed. i have genuine heartfelt sympathy for the non-anglo inhabitants of the british isles.
for they will not be able to rejoice in our glorious victory.
they must watch the autumn internationals with ever increasing despair as their nations fail once again.
i call upon all englishmen, even the northerners, to resist from mockery. we must remain humble and be grateful for our god given superiority.
as for the welsh...i can only hope that todays inevitable annihilation finally rams home their total ineptitude.
why they persist in playing the top sides such as sa, nz and england is bizarre. the sooner they accept their place in the world pecking order the sooner the pain will cease. i take no pleasure in making these comments.
the irish, conversely, have shown remarkable foresight.
a laudable decision to redevelop the ramshackle old shed they used to play in should be applauded. clearly the vast, sprawling and frankly soulless croke park was a flop. far too many people to watch them lose. the new (sponsors name) stadium, with its far more modest capacity is ideal. less irish, less tears. i commend you.
now the scots...
my dear departed pater always instilled in me that to be english meant being aware of our blessings and never to belittle or chastise those less fortunate than oneself. in that spirit i offer the following advice...why not consider concentrating on one sport. possibly cycling. that portly chap on the bike seems reasonably successful.
to return to more important matters...jonny returns!
i have noticed some rather negative comments from numerous fifth-column journos about englands injury list. PAH!
the return of wilkinson will negate any such perceived loss. any england 15 that includes wilkinson is guaranteed success. the statistics prove it. clearly the worlds greatest 10.

Some things ne'er change:
welsh wails at warren's whitewash!
International Wales
by kingofthesaxons (U13795109) 30 October 2009
good afternoon gentlemen.
i put it to you that the welsh rugby xv will lose all four of its autumn internationals.
i base this sound opinion on the following indisputable FACTS:
they are defensively weak.
they are offensively moribund.
they are unfit.
they lack mental fortitude.
until they eradicate these weaknesses they will be be unable to compete with decent opposition, let alone with the likes of sa and england.
i anticipate defeats (points gap) in the region of:
nz 40 points
samoa 15 points
argentina 15 points
australia 25 points
i take no pleasure in making these forecasts.

Yep, he was a star.
Unfortunately a guy like him can't operate here. People take offence, he gets a lifelong ban, back to the wonderfully uplifting stats and team selections and new players being bought for the new season. No humour allowed as it's juvenile and un-rugberly.

MikeyPhil was great. His run-ins with Juggler were like an unstoppable force coming up against an immovable object.
Crazy, made up nonsence against cold, emotionless facts (a bit like a certain posters view on a certain try and certain players' involvement).
And then there was famousimpress[something]. League fan always complaining about union but Poopie. The odd bit shone through when he dropped the mask and then on the last day he said he like union.

The 11 o'clock cut-off point seems quaint now. (Was it 11 o'clock or midnight?) It was a pisser if you were in a debate with someone and they managed to get the last post in. Even if it was the crappest point anyone's ever made, you had to wait until the morning to reply to it!

I really miss putting threads up under Rugby Union, Magners League, (Llanelli) Scarlets, and then having non-stop abuse from Rugby League boys about putting it in the wrong section, only to notice it had gone up on the league boards.
Also I have a confession to make, in the dying days, I became a phantom 5*. I was getting p1$s3d off with the 1* phantom and was seeking a bit of revenge.

3 mins between posts seems a bit mean now too. Though it would probably be a good thing for some folk...
There were a few occasions where the 11pm shutdown didn't happen (during The Superbowl etc).

There was another rodders (roddersrugbyref, I think).
Good times. How I never got permanently banned from old 606 is a mystery. I truly deserved it.

The old 606 was a horrible place. When I joined I thought it was a Rugby site for mass debating. It seemed that I misheard!A very cliquey vitriol fuelled bunch of narcissists. It was not a good place. This Lions Tour has given moments of flashback to those dark days.
