I think the question is really more a procedural one regarding the use and precedence of DRS - my understanding is that DRS should only overturn the on-field decision if it clearly demonstrates tha the original decision was incorrect. In the absence of any hotspot evidence (i.e. that the evidence wasn't available, not that hotspot failed to show a mark), it is difficult to argue that the third umpire had sufficient evidence to overturn the decision.

Re: Ashes: First Test
Well the 'normal' replays they showed looked pretty conclusive to me. I didn't see the ball move, it just hit the pad. I can't blame the 3rd umpire for looking at that replay 10 times and saying he's out, as that's what I did
It's bizarre that in this day and age, we can't have technology that can record AND replay at the same time. Even our TV boxes can all do that now.

Bat the day, and England's job of winning the Test will be brought much closer. It's a horrible cliché, but the first hour is so important. If Cook and KP get themselves in, the runs will soon stack up and Australia will be on the retreat. One early wicket though, and it's England who will have to defend. How fascinatingly poised it is.

I can guarantee a wicket will fall within the first six overs. It so often does.
Then we really will be up the proverbial creek without a paddle...whereas at the moment that paddle is just experiencing the onset of wood rot.

Positive English stat courtesy of the BBC:
"Alastair Cook has scored 6 hundreds and averages 61.25 in the third innings of a Test when England has had a first innings deficit.
In all third innings of Tests, Alastair Cook has an England record 10 centuries and is one behind the world record of Kumar Sangakkara (11)."

If playing International Cricket Captain has taught me nothing else, it's that when batsmen who were 'in' the night before come out to bat again, one of them is going back pretty sharpish. They have to start all over again.mystiroakey wrote:If you cant be positive about Cook an KP who are both allready IN then ......................................

I have myself full confidence that Cook and KP will both still be unbeaten come 13:00.

I think KP will be back in the Pavilion by 1130 myself.
The worst decision yesterday was the stumping, which for me was out. That was a very poor decision, far worse than the Trott one.

It was an absolutely disgraceful decision. His foot was clearly not grounded and behind the line. Awful. Gets worse every time you look at it. It's cost England at least 145 runs I think, which could easily be the difference between winning and losing the Test.

That's my worry...
Re: Ashes: First Test
Agar's foot was down, it's just that no part of it was behind the line. That decision wasn't giving the batsman 'benefit of the doubt', as the crease line is your proof - over or not? Baffling decision. Instead of talking about a great bowling performance, we're talking about this kid who admittedly played beautifully, but didn't deserve to be there.
Let's just hope England get a similar slice of luck today, and we can make up some of the damage that ridiculous 10th wicket partnership did to us.

England seek clarity over Trott dismissal. As they should.

Cook's to blame for that one though, he spoke with Root and decided not to appeal

I dont know, if Root was adamant he didnt touch it (And he should know), he would have used UDRS.... All batsman do. I think he did touch it, and hot-spot didnt pick it... Which is a worrying thought.

Re: Ashes: First Test
Either way its worrying.
But we have had so many hot spot problems before.. we have seen random spots, we have seen clear hits without hot spots and now we have seen it shown up that it needs to be triggered(that should not be needed)
Hawk eye should be adequate for this in my mind.. It has to track the ball. it counts the revs in all directions. There must be a very easy way for it to pick up knicks..

I dont know, we just have to be realistic RE: Root dismissal. Youre team is effectively -65/1, why on Earth do you tell your opening partner he is out if says he's sure he didnt touch it?

Alternatively
Root: 'Capn I didnt touch it'
Cook: 'Yeah, you did'
Root: 'Capn I swear I didnt touch it'
Cook: 'Yeah... You did'
Root: 'yeah you probably right, best be on my bike'

Re: Ashes: First Test
It doesnt really matter- its out and he may not have been, and even if he was and reviewed it he may have ended up being in!!. However either way Hotspot is a very bad system and being shown up when we have much better tech to do the job

Re: Ashes: First Test
Day off work, woke up at 10:55 just in time for the cricket.
Come on England. I remember going to watch England vs West Indies at Old Trafford a few years ago, KP was batting over night and played a stupid shot in the first over and got caught behind. Hopefully he bats through this time.

Don't think Root does "adamant" somehow...seems quite a quiet easy going chap...
Looked to me like he walked up to Cook and said something like "I don't think I hit that , skip...should I review ?". And Cook said well if you aren't quite sure better not because I heard a noise and you may well get given anyway...
And anyway he might have got a very faint edge...who knows ?
The main thing is if they had gone through the review process the wretched camera would have been reloaded and ready to give a good hotspot view on the Trott one next ball ...which would saved about 600 posts on this thread and a lot of twittering
Hopefully no controversies today...

Re: Ashes: First Test
Good start and just how he needed to start in this context but it'll only be truly great if he converts it big and can turn this match.
England still behind at this moment.
It is nice to see that application. It's a shame Trott wasn't given the chance to apply himself too.

Re: Ashes: First Test
Interesting contrast between the approaches of Cook and KP - Cook sticking with the game plan from last night of playing as few balls as possible and waiting for the loose ones to score from, while KP is a bit more his normal self and looking to impose his aggression on the game.
So far so good - I'm liking KP's form yesterfay and today, that he's played a lot of balls with a straight bat towards mid off rather than working across the line. Don't mind him being more flamboyant once he's in and in control, but I always think his better innings come when he starts in this slightly more disciplined mode - shows his brain in functioning.

Quite a contrast between the two batsmen this morning. KP scoring fairly freely but Cook seems becalmed...not really timing the few run scoring attempts he has made.
They have bowled quite well to him.
Wonder how long before we see spin ?
...and Cook gets a cut away at last for four...
