Any idea why there is such a thing as umpires call? if it hits its out and if it misses its not - clipping or smashing into it shouldn't really come into it
Re: The Ashes: 1st Test, Trent Bridge
Hawk-eye isn't 100% accurate so they call their degree of error umpires call.

So now two lefties in ...might help Swann settle a bit. He seemed to be getting a bit frustrated before.
Cook must keep the field tight here , build the pressure.

Going to the gym now, expect to comeback, with Australia having the biggest collapse, since... This morning, and before that, day 2, and before that day 1...

because hawkeye is a predictive technolgy. its seen as a guide only.
however it is very good at predicting and better imo(and proven by stats) than the naked eye. Therefore I agree with you, however on marginal call like that one(clipping by a small part of the ball) they probally should go to the batsmen anyway- due to hawkeyes margin of error

I've been wondering about that too. Makes sense from what you say.
Hello...is Rogers lbw? Umpire gives him out without hesitation but he reviews immediately.
Looks like he's safe...close one though.

poor decision by Aleem Dar.....again.
Gates opened for England
Why was that a poor decision?
too much angled down the leg side for umpire to feel convinced that that was out.
when an umpire gives an LBW so quickly..the ball better be hitting a full stump and not 2% of the ball kissing the stump

Well no trebbs- this has been one of the worst umpiring games of all time.. so i think its well worth pointing out

To the naked eye it looked plum, I'd have no problem giving any of team mates out to a ball like that one.

what if there was a technology glitch and DRS inconclusive.......the BAD decisions would have stayed.
just can't overlook these shoddy dcecisions from umps.....in a top test match

the ball barely pitched in line and angled further away- It didnt look plumb- I honestly thought it was a catch!

Re: The Ashes: 1st Test, Trent Bridge
Sorry KP fan but that is rubbish. Some umpires , particularly old time one , we're very reluctant to give lbw , but nowadays they are more ready to give them...and Hawkeye usually proves them right.
As in this case.
The law says "hitting the stumps". Not " hitting middle half way up "
With the review the batsman is safer than ever.
Actually you could say a very good decision. Or perhaps very "fine"

Not sure you can criticise that decision, unless of course you're on a wind up. It was proven right by DRS.

Re: The Ashes: 1st Test, Trent Bridge
Silly point and short leg are must have positions on this wicket for Swann.
Having fielded at short leg I know how dangerous that position is. Our spinner bowled a leg stump full toss that was smashed in to my ribs, still wince thinking about it.

This is looking ominous. Hundred up for Australia and only 1 wicket down.
Have a bad feeling they may just cruise through this run chase.
England bowlers looking completely ineffectual for the most part. Rogers and Cowan just slowly accumulating.

Pitch is looking increasingly easy...it will requiring sucidal batting or horrendous umpiring for Australia to lose from here.
Swann's tiring.......they should try Root or KP to rest swann

Time to Root to have an over or two ? Swann just hasn't been at his best here. Feeling the pressure ?
At least that was a better over from Finn.

I don't think England are that good in all honesty. The decline has been there for all to see for ages. how people like Swann were thick enough to say they'd hammer aussie i'll never know.
they deserve everything they get when aussie humiliate them and shove their arrogance in their face for years,
watch this lot retire rather than live with the thrashings.

Re: The Ashes: 1st Test, Trent Bridge
Afternoon all.
Apologies for recent absence due to European T20 commitments.
A lot of controversy over the umpiring and DRS. Australia haven't really used it well; again the Watson one, live I thought "probably out" and then immediate review - why? It was marginal, the review system isn't there for the marginal. I wonder whether if you reduced it down to 1 per innings that would help, because teams wouldn't use a "speculative review" just in case...
Really not sure what this "Broad should have walked" nonsense is. Comparisons with the Ramdin incident are so far off it's unreal - one was a case of deliberately misleading someone who was unsighted, the other a case of asking him to do his job. If you go down the route of fining people for not walking where do you stop? You don't always know when you've edged the ball (as we've seen with people reviewing instances of catches and then Hotspot showing a faint edge)...
As to the rest of the game, things can change quickly in cricket. Australia still have a lot of runs to score.
Perhaps some people will give Ian Bell a bit of a break now BTW?

Root gets one to do a little bit from the rough...but will not be able to exert pressure as evrry over Root will bowl a lose one.
If England had Monty bowling in tandem.....would have made life miserable.
the only problem I have seen in England's bowling is actually from the captain..not using his fastest bowler Finn to open the bowling

so Root has lost the game KP?
Monty would have been awesome. More poor selections from a messy team.
