Surely Smith would've known he'd hit it. Therefore his review was in direct violation of the fabled 'Spirit of the Game'

Outside the line, would have stayed not out.
but if it was given out it would have remanied out ???
If it was given out it would have remained out.
If it was given not out it would have remained not out.
The reason being that the ICC wish to retain some powers of the on-field umpire.
thanks for the explanation.
I further get convinced..in it's current form DRS sucks
Why? If the majority of the ball/absolutely none of the ball is in line/hitting the stumps, it has the power to overrule the umpire. If less than half of the ball is in line/hitting the stumps, there is an element of doubt, so it'll stay with the umpire's call.

Clarke had a look behind him after he nicked it.
Whats the difference between Broad waiting for the Umpire's decision and Clarke asking for an (extremely) speculative review?

Hughes, Haddin, then the rest. One more tonight and Cook can open the champers early!

I like the umpires call in hawkeye. If its too close for hawkeye to be reliable (i.e its extremely close) then leave the decision with the umpire.

Broad's English, Clarke's Australian. Go figure.

The only difference is that everyone expects it of Clarke.

If we can get 1 more wicket in these last 10 overs, the match should be in the bag for England.

And yet again Clarke wastes a review. Watson similarly throwing one away.
Give them 4 and they're more inclined to do it. Give them 1 and would they throw it away?

He can't do it twice. No more than twenty in the second innings with the pressure on.
Now Swann's turning it sharp!

The funny thing about umpires call... Is that it basically means... If its too close for hawkeye to accurately judge, we'll go with the human eye... Which is worse than hawkeye.

England use a review - looked outside leg to me.
What a corker of a ball though!
Oh feck, it's in line!
He's gone - what a ball!!!! One to rival Anderson's a few days ago!
1 nil to the Champions!

Plumb. Umpiring so far has been rubbish. Really rubbish.
My uncle denzil does better here in Cornwall.
So no Hughes there for Godgar so he will need Haddin to hang around.
Aussie winning it with ease with that secret weapon.

Agreed. Hawkeye isn't 100% foolproof, so you have to give the umpire the ability to back their own call.
And Hughes is gone lbw for a duck...by the slimmest of margins. Originally given not out, England had to ask for a review and that was what did for him. Swann gets his second victim and Australia are 6 down.
Wonderboy Ashton Agar IS promoted to number 8. Can he repeat his heroics from the first innings?

If its too close for Hawkeye to decide, then its fair enough to keep it with the umpire. Have to get a decision one way or another.

Wickets tend to fall in clumps again. Patience when someone gets in required.
Last stand here you'd suspect. Starc/Pattinson/Siddle might offer resistance but not much.

Agar's stumping. Trott's LBW.

Well, at the end of the day somebody (a PERSON) has to make a decision...so it may as well be the umpire.
Just like in football, they have to rely on the ref and their assistants. No system is perfect, so you may as well go with the officials' decision.
Hawkeye is just there for the blatant or marginal decisions that they miss or misjudge (being human they will inevitably make mistakes).

Re: The Ashes: 1st Test, Trent Bridge
Have England have the luck on their side? Broad you could certainly say so, but Australia got some fairly nice decisions on Trott and Agar to balance.
I'd say Australia have played better as a unit, but England's class told eventually.

Re: The Ashes: 1st Test, Trent Bridge
The facts
145 runs lost to the stumping is more than anything we have gained
they lost out on 30 odd from broad.
we also lost root- thats a 50 odd loss.
I would say england are about 170 down from bad decsions

This is where psychology comes into sport. You can have all the ability in the world, but if you're tense, nervous and unsure, you will make mistakes. Now we'll see if Agar has the mental strength to go with his technique.

Somewhat reminiscent of the 5th Ashes test in 09 at the Oval.
Warwickshire batsman scores a vital 100 to set Australia a tough target. Watson and friend get Australia off to a good start before Clarke and Ponting depart. Hussey batted with the tail defiantly then...
