Dereck Chisora W TKO 6 Malik Scott: Review
http://v2journal.com/16/post/2013/07/dereck-chisora-w-tko-6-malik-scott-review.html
By Peter Wells
When discussing controversy in boxing, 90% of the time its the judges at ringside who are at fault, but last night at Wembley Arena it was the 3rd man inside the ring that made the crucial error. After Scott was sent to the canvas from a right hand, the American shook it off looked to his corner and waited for the signal to rise. That signal obviously didn't come till late in the count as Scott rose as the referee said "9". But the referee who seemed to panic at the late rise waved the fight off as if he had counted Scott out.
The complaints from Scott were minimal, maybe out of respect or possibly out of relief that the fight was stopped - although I completely disagree with the latter.
Firstly id like to clear this up. Even though Scott lifted himself up late in the count, his knees and gloves were off the canvas before the count of 10, meaning the referee had no reason to stop the fight unless he believed Scott was in no position to continue. Which if he did believe this then why not do what every referee does and check first to see if Scott can reply to simple instructions, like "walk towards me".
Whatever you say about Malik Scott, the referee was at fault, there's absolutely no disputing that, and sadly its taken away from what was a great win for Dereck Chisora.
Now to the fight, and at the time of the stoppage I had Malik Scott ahead 49-47, but with the knockdown in the 6th, that score would have been 57-57 at the end of the round.
Scott began the fight well, his movement was slick and Chisora had trouble getting onto the inside early. Scott's punches clearly lacked in the power department but the high volume of shots resulted in the American taking the opening 2 rounds.
The third was a tale of two halves. Scott opened the round well, before 'DelBoy' closed the gap and began pounding the long torso of Scott. An overhand right late in the round from Chisora may have edged the stanza in his favour, although I scored it even.
The 4th was much better for Chisora, who once again had Scott on the ropes for the majority of the round. When Scott was not on the ropes he wasn't throwing as much either, making it far easier for Chisora to close the gap.
In the 5th, Scott seemed to have found his jab again after it seemed the 6ft 4inch Heavyweight was slowing down, he was back on his toes and darting from side-to-side. Chisora didn't look concerned and continued to plod forward looking for a big shot to change the course of the session.
The 6th round was more alike with the 4th as Scott's early work faded in the final minute when Chisora's charge became more furious. With the round winding down an overhand right landed high on the side of the head of Scott, and the heavily tattooed fighter went down in the corner. When the fight was waved off, even the victor Chisora had the look of bewilderment.
While a rematch is possible it is unlikely to happen just yet, but Malik Scott should not be looking to stoop back to the level he was fighting at prior to this bout. The 32 year old could well set up a match-up with fellow prospect Bryant Jennings in a undercard fight in America.
As for the winner, Dereck Chisora there will surely be a long cue of fighters for his next opponent - including our old friend Audley Harrison who says he would like to fight Chisora next.

Exactly what I was saying on another thread. Scott was not down when the ref reached 10 as only his feet were touching the canvas.
A matchup of chisora against harrison does not excite me one bit. harrison's level is a few steps elow what chisora is operating at. It would do little to improve chisora and also financially I could only imagine the fight would not sell very well either.

Pretty much my point aswell, ref never gave Malik chance to get up and waved it off at 9 count.

Look if youre a ref, you cant come in pretending youre in Rocky III and that fighters getting up at nine is heroic, and great drama. Maybe he should have allowed the Fight to continue, but Malik Scott admitted he was disorientated from the KD, he would have probably only taken damage, and the refs job is to protect fighters from themselves, also. Getting up at nine, makes it look like your spirit is writing cheques your body cant cash.

I didn't think he said that Raf. I thought he said it caught him behind the ear and said it's the type of shot that can scramble your senses. Certainly don't remember him saying it did scramble his senses anyway.

The ref was too hasty in my view. I always thought the ref counted to 10 including 10 and then waved his hands the fight was off. This ref hit 9 and he was doing a windmill.
Scott deserves the criticism he is getting as well. What a way to give up your '0' after 32 fights! Didn't show any heart whatsoever.
It was a pity because it was a close contest and I enjoyed Scott's good work the type of which is rarely seen by a man of his height. The holding ruined it a bit but I would have liked to have seen another couple of rounds at least.

At the time watching it I thought it was well premature.
But looking at the lack of protests from Malik Scott, & the fact he was applauding when the announcement was made makes me think that he knows he couldn't continue.
The only protests were coming from his trainer but there's only one person who knows whether he could continue & that was Scott, & he knew he couldn't, otherwise surely he would've been going crazy with his coach? I thought he looked tired the round before the stoppage & didn't fancy it anymore

If Scott was ok to continue he should have been up at seven, not waiting for his corner to tell him when to rise. All that matters though is in the title of this thread.

The ref made a mistake. It's his fault. But Scott's an idiot.
Good performance from both guys. I didn't think Scott was winning as clearly as the commentary team did so I don't think this altered the outcome.

Ref at fault, yes, took quick to call it off, yes, but at the end of the day I think Malik Scott, stepping above club-level bum for the first time in 30+ fights, failed a gut check.

Every fighter knows you get up at 8 not 9 1/2. By the count of 10 you need to be ready to fight and not still 'getting up'. Saying that many refs, if not most, would probably have given Scott the benefit of doubt and let him fight on.

I Cant see any problems with this stoppage if I'm honest.
Chisora threw more and landed more on a very reluctant Scott, who yes at times showed class, but lacked in heart and power.
He got caught with a big punch on the temple, stood to his feet on 9 1/2 an the ref waved off. Probably because Scott hadn't moved or started to move off his knee at that point (Like EVERY other boxer does).
Im sorry, but Scott miscalculated, either that or he was just hurt and had scrambled senses.
With him not complaining I feel the stoppage was a fair one.
*Also, how can sky have a guy winning when Chisora landed 100% more punches than Scott did, and also threw 54 more?!*
Total Punches:
Chisora : 82/167 (49% Connect)
Scott: 40/113 (35% Connect)
I mean, Scott landed 6 power shots and 2 jabs in the first round whilst Chisora landed 2 jabs but nailed 14 power shots again outlanding him 100%.
So odd how fights are scored these days.

I didn't see why Scott was seen as winning to be honest. He spent loads of time on the ropes and barely threw anything in some rounds. What he did throw more often then not hit Del's forearms or was ducked.
Chisora always landed something. Whether it was single jabs or body shots or whatever he was always coming in and throwing and landing.
Also, since when is clinching allowed in that quantity?

I had Chisora a round up at the time of the stoppage and was widely ridiculed for it.

I didn't write it down but I had more than a round up and expected to be against the consensus. I just don't see lying on the ropes a lot and clinching as ring generalship. Scott had bursts of quality work but I couldn't give him the round based one or two punches when Scott was being hit and backed up for the other 2 mins and 50 seconds.

it does make me wonder why he stayed down for so long. when he was apparently clear headed, rising at 8 is the norm is it not?
he was fine to continue but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have gone straight back down under another barrage of shots. chisora could hurt him and he's a good pressure fighter when his head is screwed on. for someone who comes in overweight a lot, his fitness isn't the worst.

I missed the fight so cant really comment on it but the punch stats make interesting enough reading. I expected the fight to be a clear clash of styles with Scott looking to jab and move and Chisora looking to get inside and pressure. Scott only landed 7 jabs accoring to compubox! barely one per round. They threw the same amount of punches but Chisora landed twice as many and was twice as accurate. Suggests to me that it looks like Chisora was making it his fight and winning it that way. But will need to see the actual fight when I get the chance.

It was what you said, plus effective spoiling from Scott.
In fairness to Scott he whipped in a couple of vicious uppercuts. His body shots looked painful but Del didn't really look phased by the ones that hit him bang on the chin. Possibly a contributing factor to Scott not being too keen to get up.
