Keeper Rules
- 3 players per year max.
- Can keep players twice (so three years total per guy) before forcible release.
- Players take the value of their draft round in the first redraft.
- Players move up in value by 5 rounds for the second redraft, or as high as they can go otherwise.
- If you end up with stacked picks (multiple players as keepers who count as the same round) they build up backward. e.g. if my keepers are draft picks 3, 4 and 5, I would lose draft picks 3, 4 and 5 in the first redraft and 1, 2 and 3 in the second as each player would be upgraded to an effective 1st rounder by the 5 round rule and therefore stack up.
- Undrafted players are valued at round 10 for the first redraft.
- Traded players initially count as there drafted position with the +5 rule in effect for all subsequent years.
- Years of eligibility are team specific, based on the round value of the player when traded to you. e.g. if a player is drafted in round 12 and is kept by another team for one season they will be valued as a round 7 pick when traded in year two due to the +5 rule.
- Abuse of the above rule by trading away a player over the keeper period only to get them back afterward will invalidate the resetting of two year eligibility.
- Once a player has no eligibility left on a given team they will count as a 1st rounder if traded away to somebody else and retained

2013 Draft and Keeper Analysis
See Spoiler below for Draft and Keeper Analysis
- Spoiler:
- Bath City Blues - First Three Picks: – D. Brees (QB) , L. Fitzgerald (WR) , C. Ivory (RB).
Interesting draft day for TM Moot. Last years’ roster didn’t yield many obvious keepers and so Brees and Fitz were the only logical options but eradicated his top slots. Brees is overdrafted given the current QB climate, but you get two week in week out starters which is an alright base. I love Jordy Nelson as a 2nd WR in rd 4, because you know Rodgers will get him the ball and I doubt he’ll spend a second full season riddled with niggles. I also like the late round picks of M. Floyd and C. Patterson. I think Floyd could be a surprise this year with Palmer practicing the vertical offence - does mean he has both Cardinal threats, so he is tied to how their offence turns around.
The struggles for the Bath City Blues are pretty much centred around the RBs as a direct consequence of the keeper selections. Chris Ivory is the lead back, but I’m not massively high on him as more than an RB2. After that it is Rashard Mendenhall (more Cardinals!) who is injury prone and Danny Woodhead who is backing up Ryan Matthews… who I really like once again this year. He does have two decent tight ends and could end up starting both early on whilst waiting for some others to start breaking out.
The Diddley Poos - First Three Picks: – A. Morris (RB), J. Charles (RB) , R. White (WR).
GB1919 had the first overall pick once keepers were allocated and took Alfred Morris. I figured he may have gone for Megatron given that Jamaal Charles was one of his keepers, but now that I see how the draft panned out I totally agree with Morris who now forms one of the strongest RB 1-2s in the league. His other keepers were Luck and Kaepernick and whilst they occupy the same position, I have no complaints given the draft position value of the two and the fact the only other viable keeper on last years’ roster was Percy Harvin. I’m sure he will be looking to deal one to strengthen elsewhere once someone gets QB hungry.
He has an intriguing set of WRs with Roddy White, Wes Welker and TY Hilton. I’m not sure what to make of Welker in Denver, but White is always undervalued in Atlanta yet always delivers. Hilton could be anything this year, but I figure he will still do okay although he was one of the guys I wanted to avoid.
One of my favourite picks is Bryce Brown, purely because I’m very interested to see what Chip Kelly does in Philly and Bryce could benefit the most. On the downside GB1919 waited late on TEs and it looks like a weakness.
Second Hand Secondary - First Three Picks: – M. Forte (RB), D. Murray (RB), A. Johnson (WR).
Take it to the House sensibly doubled up on RBs in the first two rounds but both are injury risks, especially Murray. However if Murray is healthy I like him and so it could prove to be a pretty good return from the position he was in. BJ Green-Ellis is one of the backups, but I feel a 6th rounder over values him as I see him loosing carries early to Gio Bernard. However flipping that around, I like the late pick of Daniel Thomas as I feel he is talent enough to take some carries off Lamar Miller who is still pretty raw.
I figure the biggest regret for this team comes in not sticking a 5th round keeper on Vincent Jackson who promptly went in the first round. It would have meant doubling up with Danny Amendola, who at a 15th rounder is one of the bargains of last year, but I’d have done it over Eli Manning who is massively over drafted at a 4th round keeper. The move wasn’t helped by taking Big Ben in the 7th… I wouldn’t have gone QB at all given Manning’s slot, but if I had I would have gone for Tony Romo.
TE is probably one of the strongest in the league and I guess both Kyle Rudolph and Tony Gonzalez could be started in multiple weeks.
Flying High - First Three Picks: – C. Johnson (WR), T. Richardson (RB) , C. Newton (QB).
Dominic Dicoco was the only auto-drafter, which hurts the middle round selections and generally prevents nabbing any diamonds in the rough, but overall the team is alright and relatively balanced. I was surprised he avoided placing a 1st round keeper on Calvin Johnson, but he managed to nab him in the 1st round anyway so it’s no real loss. The wideouts are generally quite decent, with Mike Williams in round 9 a particularly notable steal. Even going to the late rounds, I think you could get something out of Kendall Wright and Stephen Hill (a keeper) provided they find some kind of reliable supply from potentially patchy QB play.
Dominic is pretty tied to Carolina as Newton’s points will both take away from DeAngelo Williams on the ground, but add to Steve Smith through the air as basically the only reliable target. I think Vernon Davis could be in the top two for TEs this year, so in round 5 it’s a good pick even though it meant waiting a little too late on an RB2.
Thunder and Lightning - First Three Picks: – C. Johnson (RB), D. McFadden (RB), M. Colston (WR).
Thunder and Lightning cast Tom Brady aside last year, balking at the 1st round keeper. He was however able to snag the boy Brady back in round 4, which is a lot more sensible a slot for a QB in today’s NFL. In fact I quite like the early portion of this draft, though risks still remain. For example, I like CJ2K a lot more than usual due to the strengthening the Titans have done to the OL and the fact Shonn Greene is actually a viable back up who might push the speedster. I also think that when healthy Darren McFadden can be a great RB2 because he is motivated in a contract year. I even think Fred Jackson in round 7 is decent enough as an on off flex guy because I’m not sure if CJ Spiller can survive a full year as a feature back, so I guess they will still try to spread the ball a little bit. The problem is that all of the above could equally go in the opposite direction.
His WRs are strong as well, helped by a couple of savvy keepers in the mid rounds. If Danario Alexander had stayed healthy I’d have been raving, but it’s still 3 solid week in week out starters in D. Thomas, D. Bowe and M. Colston. In fact I am very high on Colston now that Sean Payton is back and I feel he is sometimes underrated in fantasy circles because Brees does such a job spreading the ball. Added to that you also get Miles Austin who is much better in fantasy that he is in real life. It’s a properly solid grouping.
Enter RG3 - First Three Picks: – J. Jones (WR), V. Cruz (WR), D. Sproles (RB).
Number 25 sold his soul to get RGIII last year, but the QB forms part of a solid keeper set which, in occupying rounds 6-8, gave enough of a chance to go get some impact players early on. Those impact players were Julio Jones and Victor Cruz, who combined with keeper Pierre Garcon solidify the WR position. The early drafting of the WRs does leave him a little short on quality RBs. Stevan Ridley is a guy I’m not totally sold on this year, but the value of him as a 7th round keeper more than covers any doubts I have. I guess the biggest issue I have is Ahmad Bradshaw in round 4, and maybe even Darren Sproles in round 3 who I have never been a massive fan of. Then again, you have to pick RBs if you hit round 3 and you don’t have any yet. I do however like Ryan Matthews at round 5 value. People seem to be playing him down a lot more this year, but I figure that’s more to do with over hyping him last time. I think he is a solid enough RB and you might actually have something resembling a featured back which is rare nowadays in the NFL.
Le’Veon Ball is a gamble in round 9. Yes he is worth it if healthy, and the signs are he is showing progress, but Pittsburgh will be more cautious than most in feeding him back into the rotation. I also figure the back to back tight ends in rounds 10-11 are pretty sound. The standard place to draft TEs is where Number 25 had his keepers, so it made sense to wait a little longer and pick up some simple contributors as they fell rather than to reach.
BamBam’s Warriors - First Three Picks: – J. Graham (TE), E. Lacy (RB), M. Lynch (RB).
Maybe BamBam should rename his team F.C Rookie as he fields 5 rookies, of which 4 are RBs for the upcoming season. The highest select was Eddie Lacy, who as the 18th overall pick is overdrafted even once the keeper guys are accounted for. This is pretty much for the simple reason that I cannot see Green Bay running enough to make him worth it. Yes the will run more, but running more than almost never is not enough. On the plus side, I like Montee Ball more since he is taken a round later and I definitely love Giovanni Bernard who is poised to be the best rookie back this season. Throw in Lynch as a keeper and your looking pretty good from say week 4 or 5 once the rookies have bedded in.
Manning is the keeper QB and at a round 6 charge is decent enough value given the current QB climate and the weapons he actually has. There’s not much point in drafting a backup since you can wait for the bye and play matchups. Randall Cobb is a steal at a round 12 keeper, but I would still look upon the position as one of weakness since Josh Gordon starts off suspended and then your left fielding question marks in Golden “It wasn’t a catch” Tate and Kenbrell Thompkins. He needs Jimmy Graham to cover for a wideout to be successful, but 15th rounder Ryan Broyles could be a true diamond in the rough if he gets the nod outside of Megatron. Percy Harvin could be a steal at round 11 or he could just stay injured… who knows.
Memphis Hound Dogs - First Three Picks: – V. Jackson (WR), AJ. Green (WR), D. Martin (RB) .
Mikeygnfl had probably the most bizarre draft in my history of fantasy football. Believe it or not he is sitting here with a whopping zero QBs. It’s a bold strategy for sure, but to be honest there are half decent serviceable guys on the waiver wire who will deliver a decent level of points. Skipping a QB allowed him to focus on bargains in the mid rounds, and whilst he seems to feel he missed on a couple of guys he wanted, I’m pretty high this year on both Mohamed Sanu and Jared Cook who he snagged in rounds 8 and 9.
The strength of the Hound Dogs is their starting RB and WR pairs, particularly the WRs in Vincent Jackson and keeper AJ Green. Doug Martin paired off with fellow keeper Lamar Miller should be pretty sound as long as Miller doesn’t crack under pressure now that he is the guy. I guess I’m most concerned about picks 4-6 which is where a lot of leagues are won and lost. I figure Mike Wallace is prime bust material (hardly a unique comment, in fact it’s a pretty predictable remark), Eric Decker in my view is third in the Peyton Manning queue up at Mile High and Mark Ingram has never been in my good books.
Justin Blackmon could be good value at round 11 once the suspension is over. Dennis Pitta is a possible IR guy, LaMichael James got a knock in preseason and well, Andre Brown broke a leg… literally.
They Put a Hole in the Roof - First Three Picks: – A. Foster (RB) , R. Bush (RB), R. Wayne (WR).
I looked at the keepers Forward Pass gave up last year and I couldn’t help but feel he might have made a mistake by keeping Jason Witten. I kind of felt CJ2K as a 2nd rounder (knocked down from a 1st due to the presence of Arian Foster) would have worked better, but as it turns out the roster he has composed feels well balanced with a chance to go places. One of the main reasons for this is the sudden promotion of David Wilson to complete featured back status in like of Andre Brown’s injury. Wilson coupled with Foster (even if he misses a week or too) and Reggie Bush should provide a consistent stream of points that most will fail to match.
Personally I love Matt Ryan this year, just like I did last year and he is the kind of guy I would be targeting in the 5th round range due to the weapons he has to throw at. Dalton should be a solid backup as well, but I doubt you’d consider starting him outside of the Falcons bye. In terms of Wideouts, the trio of Reggie Wayne, Antonio Brown and James Jones are pretty tidy, though I can’t help but feel both Wayne and Jones will see drop off’s from last year. Stevie Johnson could be a steal if EJ Manuel turns out to be half decent at the helm of the Bills, whilst Denarius Moore in round 12 is decent value too. To close out the lineup you have Mr Witten, and when I think about it, for a Cowboys fan no less, a 7th rounder seems more than okay for a guy who scores consistently in fantasy circles.
Corn on the Schaub - First Three Picks: - R. Rice (RB) , M. Jones-Drew (RB), H. Nicks (WR).
Last year I had a very good draft and whilst I’m not as happy this year I feel I have a strong enough base to push for a playoff slot. Keeping Ray Rice was an obvious move and whilst I couldn’t snag Bernard Pierce as a keeper I’m happy to reunite Maurice Jones-Drew with the team for the same cost as last year. Hakeem Nicks and Dez Bryant should be a strong enough at WR, providing Nicks can stay on the field. The next receivers up are Greg Jennings, who should be the main guy in Minnesota but I still can’t trust whilst Ponder remembers to actually throw the ball, Kenny Britt who is another injury risk and Alshon Jeffrey who I think can do well this year. Throw in Vincent Brown as a late round flyer and there’s some potential, but not too much certainty.
I kept Russell Wilson as a keeper for a 12th rounder, despite never having played him last year and my uncertainty with the Seahawks signal caller continues this year which is why I pulled the trigger on the falling Tony Romo in round 7. Say what you will about Romo, but he brings in the fantasy points. My biggest error was taking Jonathan Stewart in round 5 since it turns out he’s on the PUP list to kick things off. I think I covered my back with Ben Tate who should get some time early on as Foster’s cover man but after that I felt there were never any RBs worth taking as more than a total punt so I avoided the position leaving myself vulnerable. I’m hoping Antonio Gates can do for me what Tony Gonzalez did last year, but if he doesn’t then Tyler Eifert is a sleeper tight end that I really wanted as the signs are that Jermaine Gresham will do more blocking and less Passing out in Cincy.
Prestige Worldwide - First Three Picks: - L. McCoy (RB) , S. Jackson (RB), B. Marshall (WR) .
As is naturally the case with last year’s playoff teams, RDuncan’s team looks solid once more thanks to a nice selection of keepers, all taken in the odd round and thus preserving the even picks for which he drafted earlier in the round. McCoy should be a revelation under Chip Kelly and combined with the evergreen Steven Jackson and Frank Gore should provide a great RB base. Daryl Richardson provides a bit of youth at the position, but he could go either way this year depending on what kind of a time share he end’s up in. Michael Bush could provide nice points from round 13, but he’ll be volatile as a goal line poacher and you’d have to be bold to put him in the line up outside of heavy bye weeks. Similarly Shonn Greene could poach TDs from CJ2K, but you’d struggle to throw him in your line up on a weekly basis.
Brandon Marshall tends to always deliver in a fantasy space and is a strong receiver, but I’m more worried about what follows as none of Cecil Shorts, Chris Givens, Anquan Boldin or Darrius Heyward-Bey are locks. It could be one of those cases where you end up starting the right ones each week, but equally it could be the dead opposite. Stafford should put up big points once more and feels better placed here than the first rounder he was last year and Prestige Worldwide have also taken a gamble on EJ Manuel as the only rookie QB taken… could be a fantastic steal.
Sri Lanka Rams - First Three Picks: – A. Rodgers (QB) , A. Peterson (RB) , T. Smith (WR).
The reigning champs were utterly spoilt for choice in the keeper stakes and whilst I can’t believe I’m about to say this I almost figure they would have been better keeping all three of Adrian Peterson, CJ Spiller and Alfred Morris due to the sheer value of the latter two at rounds 9 and 11. Then again I wouldn’t exactly complain about Aaron Rodgers who will likely appear in the top 2 for all players yet again.
Following on from Rodgers, I’m a little surprised Barney actually drafted another QB so early. Yes Rodgers is on an early bye, but your plan has to be to start him all the time and so Mike Vick seems wasted, let alone at 7 round value. The Sri Lanka Rams are also missing a healthy TE, with Gronkowski likely out for a few weeks and late rounder Ed Dickson a question mark in Baltimore.
His pair of rookie receivers could do well, but both Tavon Austin and DeAndre Hopkins could start slowly as rookie receivers tend to take a while to get going. That said, both have the offences and features to be successful for their squads. Torrey Smith provides seniority and should be Joe Flacco’s favourite target so seems a good selection late in round 3, whilst DeSean Jackson late in round 5 could be another great value pick depending on how Chip Kelly chooses to use him now that Jeremy Maclin is out.

Excellent write up CD.... I don't know how's you managed to do that so fast!!
Totally agree with you on my RBs - I'm not sold on Sproles or Bradshaw either. Both of them could be anything from rank rotten to excellent. Am hoping Sean Payton comes back angry and wanting to make the league pay for suspending him and therefore makes the offense, and as a result, Sproles more prolific than ever. With Bradshaw I'm just praying he stays fit. If he does then he should get decent numbers in what should be a good offense. It's a very big if though. Ridley is a number 2 RB in fantasy terms but good value a round 7 keeper.

I went with Dickson because I'm going to wait and see if he plays tonight. If not I might try and pick someone else up. There are a few available that I should be able to go for if neither Dickson nor Gronk are available. Happy enough with the starting line-up, but the draft could've gone better. If Patterson is as good as it seems he might be and if Austin comes off then hopefully it will be another good year. Also hoping for D Jackson to have a great year with Chip Kelly and Smith to have a good year being the only big receiver for the Ravens.

Thinking of Harvin more as a future keeper rather than anyone I'm expecting much from this year .. other than that a fair write up of my team!
Lacy is the big question mark on my team, but I figure between him, Ball and Bernard one of them has to return RB2 value. Had to go RB at that spot due to not having a 3rd round pick, and none of the RBs who went after him are lacking concerns.. I figure if nothing else he has a chance at getting a lot of TDs, especially with how often the Packers are in the red zone

Nice write ups. I was sorely tempted to go with Morris but thought Rodgers was more of a sure thing. Still don't completely trust the Redskins running the ball. However I do like Morris so hope he does well anyway. I took Vick because if he comes good under Kelly then I might keep him next year and let Rodgers go. More likely is that he won't last the season, but I just need him healthy going into week 4. Pryor is already on the way out after last night's showing. He needed something spectacular for me to hang on to him.

Guys, I have had a few offers for Bernard, probably not going to trade him unless I get a real quality WR, as in a top 10 guy. Would rather keep my strength at RB than trade him for an average receiver, even if I am slightly weak there!

Great write ups as usual crazy_dave
I was very tempted to keep CJ2 also thought of keeping D.Richardson [10 rd]
Like a lot of people I was surprised how many 1st round picks were not kept , so I ended up picking later than I expected with my 2nd round pick
Looking at the depth charts there isn't one stand out team so should be a very competetive season

Of course Cruz was going to put up 30 points after doing sod all for me all last season! 55 points in it, average of 11 per player left to go for you.. Would expect RG3 to double that.. Damn Texans D is going to screw me in both v2 leagues

So having combined for 4 losses last year, my very own Corn on the Schaub and the Sri Lanka Rams have both lost in week 1.
Additionally, the highest scoring team last year, Corn on the Schaub hit the lowest score in the entire league for week one

@RDuncan8 , I was going to counter the offer you made but I pressed back and it just deleted the trade. With regards Thomas, there is no way I'm trading him for Chris Givens, given his potential, not to mention his possible keeper value as an UDFA it would take alot to get him at this stage.
