Jimbo may of course himself be preoccupied with the Hammers beating Cardiff!

Shelsey - with Batty suspended we obviously need someone else to lead on the [passion] [over the top histrionics] (delete according to preference) front. Clearly Solanki can't do that - so who better to step up to the plate than Jade?Shelsey93 wrote:Did that say: Jade Dernbach - vice captain

Meanwhile Napier hits 38 off 15 balls at the end of the Essex innings to bring them up to a healthy looking 168 - 5 against Northants. But Northants, after mid innings lull, fight back in impressive style - taking Napier's own bowling to the cleaners - 3 overs for 45. In the end a very convincing win.

19 off that Tremlett over. But Dernbach dismisses Vince with his first ball. And McKenzie later the same over.

85 - 5 as Ansari gets Dawson. Meanwhile Ervine looking dangerous with a couple of sixes.

Mahmood traps Ervine who has kept Hants in the game. 130 - 7 with two overs to go.
A four off Mahmood's last ball dents his figures - but even so 4 overs 2 wickets for 9 runs is impressive. Good bowling performance by Surrey apart from Tremlett's poor over. But with Surrey's erratic batting anything could happen....

Tight finish coming up. Ansari gets Surrey back in the hunt with a 6. 9 runs needed off 9 balls. But only the bowlers to come.

Looking like we are facing a very heavy defeat. Very strange that Ansari opened the bowling, conceded one run and then didnt bowl again despite the mayhem elsewhere!

53 - 3. Choice now of slogging out wildly and risk losing by 100 - or playing for respectability and losing by 60.

They decide to lose by 100. A hattrick cutting short the embarrassment. Jimbob - I fear not one of your more enjoyable days!Corporalhumblebucket wrote:53 - 3. Choice now of slogging out wildly and risk losing by 100 - or playing for respectability and losing by 60.

David Willey's match winning performance will be some consolation to Surrey, who expect to have him in their ranks next season.

Re: surrey vs hampshire FLT20 FINALS DAY
The Surrey fans on here seem a decent and knowledgeable bunch, but Surrey are a really hard team to like for outsiders. Perhaps they should trust their own youngsters more, rather than pinching players from other teams all the time. After all they do have a huge catchment area in population terms.LOVERBOY wrote:David Willey's match winning performance will be some consolation to Surrey, who expect to have him in their ranks next season.

Re: surrey vs hampshire FLT20 FINALS DAY
LondonTiger,
Roy, Wilson, Ansari and Dernbach are all home grown, as are Batty (despite his Worcs mid-career sabbatical), Linley, Harinath, Meaker, Burns who all play regularly in the 4-day format. Sadly, over recent years we have shed further home grown talent eg Carberry, H-Brown, Spriegel, Murtagh to others.
So we don't really eschew local/home produced players, I and most other Surrey supporters I know agree we would like to see far fewer well over 30 somethings brought in when there is already local equivalent available (eg Keedy and Lewis -> Ansari, Meaker/Dernbach/Linley etc).

Re: surrey vs hampshire FLT20 FINALS DAY
Jason Roy should be a mainstay of the team by now yet it feels as if this season he has been sidelined for Solanki.
Batty came through the Yorkshire system, moving down to London at 20 so not really home-grown, while Wilson is Irish and Dernbach one of our many Saffers. (Ps Hamilton Brown joined you from Sussex when Chris Adams joined).
And that latter point is the crux of it. My feelings for Surrey only turned negative when Chris Adams joined you. His attitude and actions really grated with me. (Oh and Charles Colville is the other reason.)

Re: surrey vs hampshire FLT20 FINALS DAY
London Tiger - Simon has made good points and I agree with them all, including that we are making plenty of use of home grown players but that we have signed at least a couple too many players right at the end of their careers. I would add the following.
Dernbach moved to England in 2000 when he was 14. His main interest in SA had been rugby and his entire cricket career has developed in England. He impressed in an U15 net session at Surrey and thereafter went all the way through the Surrey age group system including Surrey's PG academy. So he has been with Surrey pretty much half his entire lifetime. So I don't really see his nationality as at all relevant to the situation. It would seem very odd for a county to discriminate against a 14 year old in net trials.
Wilson signed for Surrey in 2005 when he was under 20. Having been brought up in Belfast I can't see anything untoward in him wanting to play for a county or in Surrey taking him on - and he has been with us for around 8 years.
When RHB joined from Sussex he was of course rejoining Surrey, having been on their books in his youth for several years. It may well be the case that Steve Davies was "pinched" / induced to come from Worcs several years ago. But I think these cases are the exception. Eg with both Maynard coming from Glam and Tremlett from Hants it was a very clear case of things no longer working out for the players at those counties and them wanting/needing to move.
Roy is a difficult one. While he has established himself in limited overs he has had lots of opportunities to become a key member of the first team in the cc, and largely has not taken advantage of them - often getting out to rash / expansive shots. There has probably been a degree of mismanagement under the Adams regime in persisting with him in an opening slot - to which he was not suited. Hopefully the new regime will have a clear plan for his further development.
Clearly Chris Adams was and is a controversial figure. I would say that in the first part of his reign the balance sheet was by no means all negative - but bringing in RHB as a very young captain was a massive gamble. He was always likely to stand or fall by the success or otherwise of that appointment.

Re: surrey vs hampshire FLT20 FINALS DAY
I guess I can still remember Surrey signing up Ed Giddens and Jimmy Ormond too. Moves that did nothing for them or the county.
I just feel that London should be a really fertile producer of cricketers for England, and with the facilities that Surrey have they shoudl be at the forefront of the County game, with their lads also being at the forefront of the England team.

Not trying to be negative - just feel English Cricket would be in a much better place if surrey could tap into the community more.

Re: surrey vs hampshire FLT20 FINALS DAY
Londontiger,
Your points are all well made and fair to a point, but Surrey were disliked by many in 1999 when the Championship-winning lineup ran something like Bicknell D; Ward; Butcher; Stewart; Thorpe; Hollioake A; Holliaoke B (RIP); Bicknell M; Tudor; Benjamin; Saqlain. Some but not much non-home grown talent there and the first 10 played for England on the strength of their Surrey performances. At that stage, some saw Surrey as ruthless, arrogant City Boys. Ironically, Adam Hollioake had them they play hard exactly as the successful England teams of recent times have sought to do.
Surrey fans would be the first to bemoan the influx of dubious over the hill over-30s (as opposed to Tremlett and, possibly, S Davies who were up for moving on anyway when they chose to join Surrey). Criticisms of recent recruitment policies are not invalid, but an underlying kneejerk dislike/envy of Surrey - nb not from you - also exists and should be factored in to any Surreyknocking.
