Jonathan Davies victim of Twitter abuse and threats after displacing Brian O'Driscoll in Lions side for deciding Test
First topic message reminder :
Jonathan Davies victim of Twitter abuse and threats after displacing Brian O'Driscoll in Lions side for deciding Test
The Scarlets and Wales centre was one of the standout performers during the 2-1 series success over the Wallabies and was given the vote to play alongside countryman Jamie Roberts in Sydney.
Coach Warren Gatland’s selection, which included nine Welshmen in the starting XV, gave rise to some serious criticism from the likes of Lions’ great Willie John McBride and former Ireland and Lions hooker Keith Wood.
The opposition to Gatland’s decision – particularly in relation to O’Driscoll – became further inflamed on Twitter, where a handful of supporters posted threatening messages towards Davies.
Davies said: “There was a lot of stuff on Twitter but I tried not to take too much notice of it. I had some good advice from players like Mike Phillips who just told me to ignore it.
“I was just grateful to have been given the opportunity to win the series. I did get a bit of verbal abuse and people wanting to break my legs and stuff. But I didn’t really care.
“I did feel like public enemy number one and there was a lot of pressure. But I felt like I had performed well under pressure.
“It was a great experience and I enjoyed every minute. Brian congratulated me afterwards and said well done. We were tight as a squad and Brian will be glad to have it on his CV.”
Davies will now turn his attention to helping the Scarlets re-establish themselves as a force in European club rugby.
“I have had six weeks offf and I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve been away on holiday and can’t wait to get back playing.”
Pretty disgusting stuff, rugby becoming more popular is attracting football like behaviour

I agree with this but one factor that you may have forgotten is BOD's leadership ability, which made most of us near certain he would start the final test, with POC and Warbs out. However, in this respect I concede that Gatland's decision is totally vindicated, as AWJ proved he was capable.funnyExiledScot wrote: All this nonsense about BOD though is just that, nonsense. He had no divine right to play.
Honestly not sure where this has come from. I may be wrong, but if I recall correctly nearly all non-Welsh posters here were miffed when the selection was announced, not just us Irish. Would genuinely recommend a few posters watching the first two tests again, BOD was actually very close to unlocking the Aussies on a couple of occasions in the first test and in both tests he was massive defensively.funnyExiledScot wrote:Gatland chose Davies over BOD for the 3rd Test. It would have been a close call, but ultimately he went for form over reputation.
Not the first time I have pointed this out but nobody else seems to have picked up; watch the first two tests, BOD is playing inside-centre, not Davies, not sure if it explains anything but check it out yourself.

God whats happening to the world, on other threads us Welsh and the English are actually getting on for once, then the welsh and Irish are at each other's throats on here. It's like everything has reversed and i'm in a parallel universe.

Did they actually apologise? I get the impression they're still bitter over BOD's axe 6 weeks on.jimmyinthewell68 wrote:and the half hearted apologies when the lions wonprofitius wrote:Anyone who abuses a player for getting selected must be some kind of simpleton. His comments just prior to the GS decider between Wales & Ireland and Lions Tour in 2009 (with Irish captain) where he stated that the Welsh players disliked the Irish.funnyExiledScot wrote:What exactly has Gatland been "dragging up" re: Ireland?
When in making a point you are making distinctions between death threats and threats of getting your legs broken you know you are losing an argument!
Since none of the refs are on twitter, I'd regard any threats they receive a lot more seriously. Surely anyone over the age of 10 doesn't take twitter too seriously? It will be interesting to see if Davies is left out of any Scarlets/Welsh team playing in Ireland this season (which is what happened to Alain Rolland in Wales).
He said it was because of the Davies-Roberts partnership. It wasn't a close call going on 6Ns form which seems to count for a lot around here. Davies had a very poor game against Ireland in the Millenium and BOD got MOTM.Gatland chose Davies over BOD for the 3rd Test. It would have been a close call, but ultimately he went for form over reputation. I'd agree that he didn't apply the same logic to other selections, but given the Lions won every game except two (and even then by one point and two points respectively), suggesting that Gatland isn't an extremely good coach is nonsense. His record for Wasps, Wales and now the Lions is outstanding.
Warburton looked lost in the first Test and was definately selected because he was captain for the 2nd. He had an excellent game in that Test - but guess what - the Lions lost.I think posters struggle for credibility when it becomes purely about their own players, and they can't appreciate the arguments for players from other nations. I think it's entirely fair, for example, to suggest that SOB was unlucky not to get more Test action. He was excellent in the 3rd Test. Then again he was poor against the Brumbies. On the other hand I think most would agree that Bowe was pretty lucky to play in the Tests - excellent player, but had fitness very much against him, having not had a chance to really prove himself on tour. It's all swings and roundabouts, and very much a subjective matter for the coaching team. They got a few things wrong, no doubt. The selection for the 2nd Test, and the squad composition at the outset were two I think with hindsight they'd have done differently. All this nonsense about BOD though is just that, nonsense. He had no divine right to play, and the case for JD2 was just as strong. Gatland made a call, and the Lions crushed Australia in the 3rd Test.
I'll repeat again - Gatland said he was selecting Davies because of his partnership with Roberts. He also said after the game he dropped BOD because Davies was overawed/intimidated by him and had gone into his shell. That would suggest he was picking Davies on reputation.
He made very hard work of a very poor Aussie side.I don't think he was being pro-Welsh or anti-Irish in making the call. He just wanted to win, and he did. Credit where credit is due please.
I guess Gats will sulk now because he won't get elevated into the realms of the great Lions coaches like Geech & Willie John who won Lions series in far more hostile places.

If JD's in the Wales team away to Ireland next February, I wonder if he'll get singled out for abuse by people with the same mentality as the trolls on Twitter. I hope not, as in nearly 60 years of supporting Wales I've always regarded Irish fans as the best.

I have not forgotten BOD's leadership qualities. No-one on 606v2 can go a single day without being reminded. Suffice to say that there was sufficient leadership within the side to win comfortably.theslosty wrote:I agree with this but one factor that you may have forgotten is BOD's leadership ability, which made most of us near certain he would start the final test, with POC and Warbs out. At 13 JD2's form over the course of the tour was better than BOD's in my view. I'm not saying BOD was poor in the first two tests, but JD2 was the form centre on the tour. BOD acknowledged his outstanding form the week previous (huge credit to BOD for that by the way). When Roberts was fit to play 12, I think it was always going to come down to a straight shoot out between JD2 and BOD for the 13 slot. Based purely on form Gatland went for JD2. Clearly if he was going to pick on reputation, experience and ability to deliver a speech, he'd have picked BOD. I keep saying it must have been very close, and I genuinely believe that. Very little separating the two players. However, had he picked BOD over JD2, I'd have said at the time and I'll say now, JD2 would have been seriously unlucky given his performances on the tour.

Bar the Brumbies game and possibly the Reds, warm-up performances count for little towards "form" when you performed fairly poorly in the first two tests, as I personally thought Davies did. BOD also played very well against weak opposition.funnyExiledScot wrote:I have not forgotten BOD's leadership qualities. No-one on 606v2 can go a single day without being reminded. I don't think the selection of Davies was that outrageous but I just don't see how it was a form call, I'm happy to leave it there.
FWIW I believe the centre combo with the most potential would have been BOD and Tuilagi, but bar a training session against Western Force that failed to materialise.

Player ratings from 2nd Test (British paper).
Comment: Brian O’Driscoll - 7
Put in a big shift in defence with the odd mistake in attack and can still get better. Will have to help win the series.
Comment: Jonathan Davies - 5
Not a great game and errors that proved costly from the centre who will make way for Jamie Roberts return.

Bit of a hair trigger there Slosty
Back on topic (?) its hard to judge the performances of the centres in the first 2 tests as they were getting very little ball as our line out wasn't functioning, nothing to run on to. North was the star of the show really. He will hopegfuly become an excellent centre

Not the first time I have pointed this out but nobody else seems to have picked up; watch the first two tests, BOD is playing inside-centre, not Davies, not sure if it explains anything but check it out yourself.

No, I'm expressing an opinion, and I was talking about the tour as a whole, not just the 2nd Test (in which neither BOD nor JD2 played well).Sin é wrote:You are revising history now.

What is certainly true is that the way the Lions were set-up to play, the 12 jersey needed to be worn by either Tuilagi or Roberts, and the 13 jersey by BOD or JD2. JD2 and BOD playing together never looked to me like an effective partnership.

I think Drico should have been picked for a number of reasons but he wasnt and it didnt make a slight bit of difference so its history. He still played two tests and made a big contribution.

Back on topic (?) its hard to judge the performances of the centres in the first 2 tests as they were getting very little ball as our line out wasn't functioning, nothing to run on to. North was the star of the show really. He will hopegfuly become an excellent centre
The Gatland 'technique', for the most part, works. Its won 2 Grandslams, a 6 Nations Championship and a Lions tour.
For North, well, did you see his try in the first test ? I don't think anyone got a hand on him did they ? No beating up needed there. He did, however, run through what, 3 Irish defenders to score against you ?
As for the Warburton comment, I'm not sure what to say. He certainly has the physique, hes probably one of the strongest on the Welsh team. He is, however, prone to a few niggling injuries. But then so was Moody and SOB barely has the knee cartlidge to run anymore.

PS - wasn't it the Ospreys that won his first GS for him? He was coaching Wales for about a month before deciding to go with the Osprey gameplan.
George North is a fine player - he is just lucky he is a big lad as he probably wouldn't get near a gatland team if he wasn't. By the way, I'm quite happy with Zebo. Did you enjoy watching his flick in the Millenium?
Thats the first I heard about SOB having knee cartilege problems. Maybe you are thinking of Ferris?

Normal service where we beat you almost every year? or normal service from the 70s?
Lads. You have to be careful when you damn a whole nation for the sins of a few.
Whether that nation is Ireland, Wales or any other.
When someone says something you don't like you must avoid saying "moaning Irish/Welsh" or "Cheating Irish/Welsh" or even "Typical Irish/Welsh"
You are all as bad as each other for carrying on this shyte for so long.

What does it matter unless its sustained ? I'd rather win actual championships than get the odd win if I had to choose. Ireland beat Austrailia in the WC then were given a lesson by Wales. Didn't do you much good did it ?
This size thing is a bit of an obsession for you clearly. How tall is Leigh Halfpenny ? Shane Williams certainly wasn't cast aside was he ? (sore [point for you I know) We also have Eli Walker and Robinson in the wings (no pun intended)
And yes, congratualtions, you've got me, its Ferris who is knackered, you win

Ireland hasn't lost to Australia in the last 5 years (last loss was in 2008 in Perth). Even the Munster Academy have beaten Australia in this time. Trouble is that Gatty's tactics don't really work against SH opposition.munkian wrote:What does it matter unless its sustained ? Pretty sure Gatland will be pretty happy with his tactics after that 3rd Test. We forget how hard it is to bring together a group of players on such a short timeframe and make them a cohesive unit. By the time of the 3rd Test, the Lions were really clicking, with signficant contributions being made by players from England, Ireland and Wales.
Regarding Wales vs SH sides, whilst the results have been disappointing, they have come mighty close on several occasions. I wouldn't say Gatland's tactics "don't work", more that the players haven't quite been able to win those close games.
Given his success at international and club level, I think he can feel pretty secure with his coaching abilities!

As Welsh international coach, he has managed to just about beat one SH team since he took over Wales in 2007. The amazing thing is that pretty much all the 'supposedly' lesser teams like Scotland, England & Ireland have managed to do so frequently in the same period.funnyExiledScot wrote:Sin é wrote:Trouble is that Gatty's tactics don't really work against SH opposition.
