Just imagine the carnage if the Wallabies ever get a series win over the All Blacks again. Crikey. Or a win at Eden Park even.Which hoodoo has gone on longer?

Easy Answer. RWC 2011. ABs fans had suffered much pain since 1987.
After watching 87 RWC as a teenager it all seemed so easy.

Shield slightly different.
After so many failed challenges in my lifetime their was almost a resigned feeling of despair that I/we would
never see the shield in my lifetime.
Felt bloody good on a personal level.

The photos in the ODT are testament to the feelings in Otago this week.
Some great players who nearly won the shield.
Richard Knight, Dave Latta, Laurie Mains etc
Former All Black Tuppy Diack who won and then lost it in 1956.
Just wish I was there!

EBOP. sorry didnt reply sooner but took leave of absence from 606 for 5 days afta a weekend of drunken posting!
I put the keyboard down and walked away! HAPPY!!!!

Yeah, saw the celebrations on the news Gunner, meant a lot to you guys. Still hard to believe it'd been that long. I remember watching that Latta game and it was so nearly yours then. Big crowd for the next challenge!

Hawkes Bay hold off Counties next week which is very very doable and The Mighty Taniwha have a 2nd attempt in one season! I been waiting 12 years for one challenge and could get two. We took Waikato close and we can do the same with Hawkes Bay and I will be there:)

Well done HB but I was hoping Otago would hold it for the season before losing it. Just sort of to make it more attractive.

I have taken leave already and will drive to Napier from Whangarei and back for this game. Hell of a drive whichever way you go but to watch them win the shield or go close it's worth it. Northland punch way above their weight with a few of the lads playing for small Mangonui League team Awanui which is amazing.

Tana Umaga wants this one big time and both he and Counties have never had it, and it seems a month for sharing the shield to long time no holders.
First rugby match I went to was a Taniwha vs Aucks match where all 3 Goings played and took the shield up north- was also a time the shield was moving around a lot.

Rainbow just make sure the Taniwha dont do what they did in 78 when first chippie semenoff kicked the winning goal 10 minutes after the match was over vs manawatu then had the cheek to hide the sheild in the taniwhas cave over summer instead of honouring the Otago/ Southland challenges...poor taste it was...lets not see any repeat should they get up...Im sure Rene R wouldnt stoop that low mind you...

Let's win it first!! HB have to defend against CM but I see this as extremely doable. Taniwha have a very hard home game against Wellington who are yet to drop a bonus point, but a close game against them will do the boys good. I see the Going's often at Mid Northern as well as Mr David Holwell and it is a great club as are many of the Northland clubs North of Whangarei.

If in 1978 the Taniwha hid the shield in a cave over summer it would have been foolish coming to find it a Taniwha and Ngapuhi to battle ... not good.boxing

Looks like Gunner wasn't the only one drinking. Maybe some of the players don't know the shield has been and gone!

Good on you rainbow for your support. Beautiful drive down even though it's a serious mission. Hope you get the opportunity and the boys deliver.

My liver couldnt handle having Shield for too long.
9 days was about enough!

The important thing mate is that you got to see it in your lifetime. As a kid I remember that fateful match against Auckland and how kids were bursting onto the field at full time. I was there and was part of something truly special. You don't see crowds like that anymore unfortunately. Well probably fortunately actually but I mean that level of support is just not seen nowadays with night games and ticket prices the way they are.
