The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to Trebanog, the home village of Cliff Morgan.
So grab a beer, cider, whiskey or wine.... or a warm beverage and sit back and enjoy the 2013-14 rugby season.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of the legendary
Cliff Morgan, Dorothy Squires & Esme Coles, Jason Tovey, Aaron Smith and Monterey Jack.

WilliG!!!!
I don't believe it!!!
I was there helping out!!!
What was your number?
You weren't one of the 4 people who stood there watching me search for their bag of belongings for about 5 fruitless minutes and then when I asked,
"Was it one of the white plastic bags or was it a back pack or anything?"
thought that was a good time to announce,
"Oh....I didn't have a bag."
"Ah! That'll be why I can't find it despite searching frantically!"

The Dubs were crusin in the 2nd half. I was afraid they would be punished for being too casual.

Didn't think they looked in too much trouble tbh.
Why Mayo did not go for a goal at the end was odd. Time up and virtually no chance to equalise.

Very hard to score a goal with 4 players + the keeper in there. All of them allowed to handle the ball.
Defo should have gone for it though. Their only chance of the win.

Didn't hand a bag in mrs p. I'm old school like that. Very impressive set up down at the Mary Peters track. Man I am feeling it now. I was number 495. Finished in the top 1800 so can't be far bad with that.

Awh WilliG!
That was my bit!
I was handing out the bags mainly to those numbered 1-1,500. They may have thought we were giving out goodie bags or they just not have been thinking at all and followed everyone else like little exhausted sheep.
Mind you. If I had just run 14 miles I would have wanted a darn good reason to climb all those steps. That was just cruel to have the bag pick up there. They hope to change that for next year.
Most folks seem to have enjoyed the day.
Well done on competing, finishing and your time.
I am a bit concerned where the 4 competitors are whose bags were not collected.

Really Notch?
That is rotten as they wont even get a time officially. Were they looking for their bags?
Can't believe that WilliG could have met both of us today. I'm sure that would have just topped his day off nicely!

What a blydi final!!! I was a bit intimidated at first cause the pub was full of Mayo fans, then I found two Dubs who looked after me and we cheered the boys on, but like Gibbo I always believed regardless and proudly wore my Dubs shirt. When I was going to the loo I told a Mayo fan that they'd lose - and he actually agreed with me! Home now watching Scrum V. Matt Morgans try was something to behold last night fair play.
Evening all by the way...hope all's well.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
One guy came back looking for his bag quite late this afternoon. Got his mate to pick up both their bags, problem is his mate was obviously much fitter than him and finished a lot earlier- got bored waiting for him, decided to leave his bag 'in a safe place' and head home. Of course by the time he got to the finish line his unattended bag had gone missing with his phone, wallet, housekeys etc. So I imagine he'll have some words for his 'mate' the next time he sees him! May well be one of your four bags, don't know.MrsP wrote:Really Notch?

But no, none of the stragglers were. They still did have times, the clock was still running after 4 hours. That was the absolute last thing to be taken down/put away. They left the clock to run as long as was practically possible. I get what you mean as in they won't be accurate to the second depending on when they put away the rest of the champion chip stuff but when you're over the 3 hour mark for half-marathon I question whether you're quibbling over seconds...
They did however run out of medals which was absolutely gutting for the last several hundred to finish.

Yeah!
How on earth do you run out of medals?
Every entrant has to register and pay so you know exactly how many medals you need. Some of the variables you can be forgiven for getting wrong on the first running of an event but not having enough medals is not one of them.
There were folks finishing when we still had the bag collection up in Les Jones who didn't get medals.

Evening, amigos. Sounds like a busy day has been had by some of the regs today. I wish UK tv showed the GAA finals - would have liked to see Dubs v Mayo. It has been nice enough day here so been clearing up outside. And collecting fruit for some crabapple and rowan jelly which is now dripping through the jelly bag. I have no idea how it will turn out, but it's worth a try.
Great to hear that Hound and Andy are fixed up for next May. How many of the Poisson tribe are going to be there, Mrs P?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
I doubt any of us will make it Puma.
It always falls on the same day as the Ulster Schools Athletics finals which we have had an involvement in for the past 4 years and we would hope to have one or 2 competing in again this year if all goes well. It is "THE" big day in School athletics locally and allows qualification for the Irish Schools. They also use preformances there to select teams for Interprovincial and International competitions as well as the UK School Games so we really couldn't risk planning a trip away that day or it would end the season of the wee fella.
Having had a taste of some of those higher level competitions this year he would be really keen to do all he can to get selected again. Most of those are U17 competitions so this is his last chance to get back on those teams.

Great that your 'shoal' are so interested in sport, Mrs P - taking part, that is and not just watching from the stands or the sofa. Looking at my bank account last week tells me the awful truth that I am now officially an OAP (how did that happen????) so I have to content myself with putting boot to hill - strenuous enough for me!

You know what they say Puma.
Being (insert age of choice) is great when you consider the alternative!
Yeah the kids are involved in a fair bit alright.
This weekend we have had,
2 at Ballet
1 at basketball
1 at athletics training
2 at Hockey
1 at dance/gymnastics
1 at Horseriding
3 (+me) helping at the Half Marathon
And that was an easy weekend!
I love my Ulster but there is no way I am missing one of the kids do something to watch them.

It must be a joyful thing, Mrs P, and enhanced, of course, if they are succeeding in their activities. My various nieces and nephews play rugby (my niece is a Swiss international!!), traditional Swiss wrestling, play music to a high level, etc but it is a great joy to see them doing things that interest them enough to take it up with enthusiasm. And the family awaits the arrival of the newest any time now - will be my 7th niece/nephew!

Are the Swiss ones your siblings kids or on MrPuma's side?
What is Swiss wrestling?
It's not a sport I automatically associate with Switzerland.

Have to say guys credit to you. I thought the whole event was fantastically well organised. My only query would have been no water stations between 3 and 9 miles? Bit of large gap, when most people were panting. That aside I had a fantastic time. Certainly be running a half marathon again, not sure if I'd quite have the patience for a full one though. Marshalling looked good craic though so I might volunteer at that.

WilliG.
Would you email the organisers about the water station?
Before I left a man came back to the track as he had forgotten to pick up his bag and I asked him about the event and he mentioned the same thing about the gap in the water stations. That is the sort of thing that the organisers would like to hear about so they can improve the event for next year.
As this was the first time they have run this event it was bound to have some teething problems but they would be keen to have feedback.

But come on mrs p surely a 6 mile gap between water stations across the middle of the race is an elementary thing? Haven't heard of an serious injuries or the like? I did run past a girl on the toepath who had collapsed, paramedics rushing to her but I assume she's okay or it would have made the news.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
I have no idea how they organised the water stations although they seened to be the same folk who run the full Marathon. Maybe the water demands are different in the shorter distance because it attracts a different group of runners? Or maybe the water demands are actually the same as for full marathon but they were expecting them to be different?
Who knows?
Thankfully all of that was going on way above my head. I just had to turn up and sort out the bit I was sent to. Even that had some teething probs.
There was one guy at the finish line who was quite unwell and a fair few sprains etc. I don't know for sure about the girl on the towpath but it wasn't mentioned to me at the end so I hope that means it wasn't too bad.

All of this will get sorted out once the race becomes established, but feedback from participants and marshalls will get things moving faster. I've been marshalling the Stuc a'Chroin race for many years now and each year's experience helps us to improve. That said, this year's race ws run in appallng conditions that it wasn't possible to plan for. Never been so cold for so long in my life!

Also I've never drunk so much fluids as I have in the last 24 hours. I must have taken in about 4L since the event. Is that bad or is my body just rehydrating. I really didn't think I sweated that much. Oh yea up for work now by the way... Ughhhh

WilliG,
I would be worried if you hadn't drunk at least that much in the hours following the race.
You would have lost that much fluid in a 2 hour race especially as it was quite warm yesterday.
So long as that thirst doesn't continue I would be happy.

Cheers puma. It wouldn't be the same not going, but I was not going to pay £200+ a night for a hotel in Cardiff. Even modest B&Bs were asking £150+.
The Ibis in Brizzle is £61, so happy days. Not doing the Amlin though.

The Algarve, Puma. I think Prop's in Tenerife as we speak!
It was a great holiday - not a drop of rain and not too hot. Although we went on a day trip to Seville, where it was 38 degrees...
The only problem was on the Wednesday evening when we decided to try some cocktails after dinner. I had a Long Island iced tea, which was okay, and then a Signapore sling, which was the most delicious drink and it was far too easy to forget how potent it was. So I ended up having four of them, and they were big buckets of glasses too. Thursday was a quiet one!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
Sorry - got the two of you mixed up!
That's the trouble with cocktails - they slip down far too easily. One year, when we still had The Inn, Mr Puma was handing out Mai Tai's to the select band invited to join us for Christmas Day morning drinkies. In those days, I had a ritual climbing Ben Shiann on Christmas Day morning and when I returned, discovered that my sister, who was supposed to be in charge of rattling the pots and pans for the Christmas dinner, had over-indulged! We had to prop her up in a corner of the kitchen, burbling gently to herself. Guess who ended up cooking the dinner instead!!
