The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to Trebanog, the home village of Cliff Morgan.
So grab a beer, cider, whiskey or wine.... or a warm beverage and sit back and enjoy the 2013-14 rugby season.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of the legendary
Cliff Morgan, Dorothy Squires & Esme Coles, Jason Tovey, Aaron Smith and Monterey Jack.

Was the roof left open? You've had a bit of rain lately, no?
The league guys tear up the pitch badly - soccer players hate it. There was WC qualifier here and they made such an issue of how bad the surface was.

Breaker - I think the roof had been left closed to accommodate the opening ceremony. The MS pitch always cuts up badly.
Good try from one of the Burgess boys.

Afternoon, Cari - pleased to note that you are feeling fit for the gym again. Are you stocked up on candles and other just-in-case-of-powercut stuff? It seems that S Wales is going to get hit by the predicted storm tomorrow as well as England. There again, could turn out to be a storm in a !

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
ooh big fight!
Hi Puma - I did manage a gym class this morning, but I was phooked after it! My poor knee doesn't like it. I'm going to have to be less harsh on it. My heel is still sore from internal bruising too. So much for the gym making us healthier!
I'm not too concerned about the coming storm. According to the Welsh forecast, the worst of it will be further West along the Irish Sea coast. It's always windy in Cardiff anyway, so I'll wait and see what happens. I won't be sitting on the top deck of the bus Monday morning to work though!

Do they have a sin bin in league? Burgess just almost knocked a guy out and it's gone "on report" and he's still on the pitch. The injured dude is off for treatment.

I am going to try and stay up and watch the next match. Will feel tired later this morning no doubt!
He was very lucky, Cari. Should have been sent off. They do have a sin bin but it's a though they disregard the rules for these types of matches and put him on report... so he will miss a game or two at least.

There's also an 'International Rules' match at Croke Park... 6am here. Might have to record that one or watch a replay later... in the afternoon.
Cari, I did a lot of cutting and tidying up today. Wasn't so hot so I thought I'd make some head way. Shredded hands again (always forget to wear gloves) but the pain has subsided. Looking forward to doing a bit more later on.... today.
I made a temporary bird bath out the back using a giant pot plant lid turned upside down... the poor buggers have been so dehydrated lately. A few minor bird wars going on between species vying for control of it. They are so noisy too!

I tipped them by 8 points but deep down was worried they could lose. You'd want to avoid NZ in the semis. They are a very strong side. It wouldn't surprise me if they won it again. England are pretty strong too... they will get better each match for sure.

Thurston always gives away his scrumcap to some kid in the crowd. He always looks like he could do with a good wash and a haircut. Tough customer though... he hates losing.
Don't know if there's a Tommy equivalent in their RL side. Surely there must be. Oz play Ireland at Red Stag Park in early Nov.

Yes, it's all live on Ch 7 free to air here.
We had an Aussie (Andrew Voss) a Kiwi (Darryl Halligan) and Shaun Edwards for the first match.
Jiffy, Brian Noble and someone else? calling this one. About 6 or 7 NRL players in the Italian side.

Well the Italians are actually quite good at rugby league it seems! Unless it's just that wales are very bad.
Yeah you've probably got the three BBC commentators that we have here. Jiffy makes me laugh, he still gets his hair off.

He's a character. I know many people hear too much of him but he's funny in small doses and was a great player... so I can excuse his bias and exuberance.

19-30 to Sharks now. Pretty good game, Lb. Saints wiped the floor with Sarries 41-20. 6 tries to 2 and a more comprehensive win than the scoreline suggests. Sarries very lucky to be awarded a try that looked to be held up.

Is it being picky to point out that BT's commentators don't seem to know the difference between the in-goal area and the dead ball area? Good win for Wasps, btw.

puma -
was that anything to do with the football pitch markings? They don't seem to paint them over these days.
Massive win for Wasps though in very tricky 2nd half conditions. Tigers played it tight and used their forwards to try and bash holes. Great defence from us though; kept them out several times when they were on our line.
Hopefully we can get something at Glaws next week.

Cheers lucky - Tiggers haven't beaten us at Adams Park since 2007.
Anyway, is everyone OK after last nights storm? Lots of reports of flooding in S. Wales, though you don't seem to have had the winds we had here.
It was really bad here between 6-8 am, and there are still some fairly strong gusts. All the tube and rail lines in W and NW London are suspended because of fallen trees.
I'll go out later to see what damage has been done.

We've just got the rain .. again. In other news, a massive flock of redwings has just blown in to town, which is a bit strange. They usually arrive when the winter sets in in Scandinavia and I didn't think it had been that cold there yet.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
Evening All
Apologies in advance if I offend anyone (especially those in the South-East) but all that fuss about the impending storm was nothing but a storm in a teacup (pardon the pun) as far as South Wales is concerned. The wind peaked Sunday morning - not in the early hours of Monday morning as predicted - and then it was nothing I haven't witnessed here before, I'd say about 60mph max. Oh and it rained alot...well it always does in Wales! It still is raining heavily on-and-off. Nothing new there for October. The flooding around Cardiff (which wasn't much) is mainly due to the leaves from the trees blocking the drains, and potholes in the road becoming lakes and ponds. The bus to work was like a log flume going down the hill through Castleton. It was rather fun. It just cheeses me off that the press built it up so much for half of the UK and really the storm seemed to skim the far South West-East. I'm sure there were a few people inconvenienced today in Wales under the assumption there would be mass disruption. I actually got into work earlier than normal! Anyway, I hope that everyone's keeping warm and dry.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
Hi Cari. Four people have died as a direct result of trees falling, three of them from London. There are dozens of trees down in my neighbourhood and loads of people could not commute into central London from the suburbs as there were no surface train services running.
I don't know if you have seen the pictures on the news but it has been a pretty traumatic day here. I was worried about potential loss of roof tiles or the chimney while the storm was at its worst this morning.

I'm keeping warm, Cari, but not that dry - not outside anyway. Should be bright and dry tomorrow, hopefully. I need to phone my aunt in Hythe to make sure she's OK, but it's tricky when I know her routine and I hang back from phoning when I know I will be geting her out of her chair ( she's 86). Her latest news is that the pain in her arm is actually nothing to do with the operation for breast cancer, but disintegration of her shoulder joint. Amigos, I wish it were possible to persuade her to come to stay here where my sister and I could look after her, but she is too fiercely independent for her own good. Silver Puma and proud. Sigh.

Puma, I just know my dad would / will be like that. Generally, unless he comes up with an idea himself, he dismisses it. The trick with him is to plant the seed of an idea as gently as possible and hope he thinks it was his all along.
In fairness to the Met Office, they made it clear enough that there was a fair bit of uncertainty as to the path the storm would take, hence it was an amber warning rather than a red. With something like that, it's much better to err on the side of caution.

Agreed lucky - if one of the 220+ trees that fell on railway lines caused a derailment or fell on a carriage the train companies would have been criticised.
Two people I know knew the guy who died in Watford - he was a Harrow lad.
Anyway, ow do you reckon Wales will do in the AIs?
Beat SA and you'll be on a roll. I would pick Warbs and Tipuric for that one to ensure you compete at the breakdown.
Then you need to shift the point of attack and move their pack around the field. Gats will probably go for a 'kick chase' game I reckon. If that's the case then Phillips needs to get more height on his box kicks than he did in Aus.

I'd have to go Lydiate and Warburton. Get Lydiate smashing their power runners. I fear it won't be the game for Tipuric. I'd go Sam and Tips v Australia though.

Toby is out though Rev. My thinking was more Warbs at 8 and Tipuric at 7. A pretty quick back row if you ask me. Dunno who else you could bring in at 8 - Ryan Jones or Bearman?
Cheers Notch, but I'm done with the old tipping comps. I kept forgetting to put my picks in.
