The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to Trebanog, the home village of Cliff Morgan.
So grab a beer, cider, whiskey or wine.... or a warm beverage and sit back and enjoy the 2013-14 rugby season.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of the legendary
Cliff Morgan, Dorothy Squires & Esme Coles, Jason Tovey, Aaron Smith and Monterey Jack.

Hi all.
Lucky - the 'order of play' for me next weekend will be Ealing v Plymouth Albion live on Friday night. Then on Saturday, England v Argentina (14:30) - Wales v SA (17:00) - France v NZ (20:00).
The last game is dependent on whether I can still stand up and see straight!

Ireland v Samoa should be another good match. Ireland will be favourites, but it'll be interesting how they go with a new man in charge.

Could be a few changes for Australia. Earls is out injured, Healy and O'Brien are just back in training this week so might be late fitness tests, POC is a serious doubt and they are toying with the idea of resting Sexton who has played 13 games in 12 weeks coming off the back of Lions Tour and has looked rather fatigued in training so far.Luckless Pedestrian wrote:Ireland v Samoa should be another good match. Don't think we can rest too many players against Samoa, they are exceptionally dangerous opponents. We'll need to be good to win.

Racing rested Sexton this weekend. Possibly some agreement with the IRFU?
The worst thing about playing Samoa is the number of head hits they go for in the tackle. Lots to admire about them in attack though.

No, he was going to be used off the bench but picked up a niggle in the warm-up. The coaches at Racing asked him if he could play and he said "No" as it was affecting his kicking. I don't know whether he had half an eye on this test series when he told the coaches at Racing he couldn't play, or whether its a genuine niggle that will worry Ireland. Likely he would have played if it was a big game and he had no Ireland commitments looming. They still had him in the matchday squad so if there was an injury he would have been thrust in regardless.Hound of Harrow wrote:Racing rested Sexton this weekend. Ok Notch. I was reading a T14 review which said Sexton was rested. If he was on the bench then he had every chance of playing at some point.

I really hope there's no truth to this. Surely the idea is to do everything you can to get the ref on side before a match, not set him against you?

Genius by Gatland!
This will bring back the sending off of Warbs to the publics attention and put huge pressure on Rolland to heavily favour the home side.

If it has any effect, it'll have the opposite effect to what Gatland wants. For want of a better word, Rolland strikes me as a stubborn man. Try to sway him in such an obvious way as this and he's more likely to go the other way.

It's my favourite Neil Young song- by far- but one of my least favourite Neil Young performances.
Its vocal part demands to be sung in a lower register. Such a brilliant piece of songwriting. Listen to K.D. Lang singing it, beautiful. Although I'm not a massive fan of that arrangement.
Just feels like it's hard to find a version of the song that does it justice, which is a shame as it's one of the greatest songs written last century.

Well, I read the whole article and there is no mention of Warburton's comment there.
I think you are being a bit unfair to castigate us for believing a BBC artcle about a guy who has a strong history of publicity seeking gestures before matches.
Not even sure many of us "put the boot in" either.
I think commenting about rugby related articles on a rugby forum was a reasonable thing to do, no?
You seem very keen to cast Gatland as some sort "put-upon" innocent. I suppose he previous pre-match nonsense has been a fabrication by "headline readers" too?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
Anyway, I've just read the article with that quote from Warburton. He says that Gatland is not meeting Rolland too. He says the meeting Gatland has gone to is with the IRB to find out what the refs are looking for.
""That's where he [Gatland] is today, he's going to find out what the refs are looking for and then we'll get that feedback on Thursday; whether it's something at the breakdown or scrum engagement and we get that fed back that information.
"I guess because he's gone to that meeting on Tuesday, it's not as important [to meet Rolland] .
"Normally me and Warren will go and meet the coach(sic) and chat to him, but most of the time when you meet them you're on the same page."
I suspect he meant that they normally meet the ref. Which implies that this is abnormal, no?
And is that not the thrust of the article entitled,
"Wales v South Africa: Warren Gatland rejects Rolland meeting."?
In what sense are we "jumping on non-stories"?

The headline is very misleading and had little to back it up in the main text, by way of direct quotes and in reality was just "bbc sources suggest" kind of stuff.
As I said on the article, they know how he's going to ref and we now know Gatland is aware of what refs are looking for anyway. It speaks volumes of what a non story it is that the Western Wail wasn't even interested in putting anything of it online.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
If it turns out that Gatland tends not to meet referees before matches, then I agree there's not much of a story there. But if this is the first time he's chosen not to meet a referee, then regardless of the reason for that, I'd say it's newsworthy, albeit not hold-the-front-page newsworthy.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
Well, you can only comment on direct quotes apparently and Warburton is quoted as saying,
"Normally me and Warren will go and meet the coach(sic) and chat to him, but most of the time when you meet them you're on the same page"
Now, maybe he did actually say "coach" but that would be strange so I think he meant to say "ref". Since he said that NORMALLY they do go and meet the ref then this implies that to not meet the ref before the game is abnormal and therefore noteworthy.
But, apparently, that is an over reaction by a "headline only reader" who doesn't need a reason to put the boot in!
Anyway, how's you fellow headline reader and boot-putter-inner?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
Given the time that people were posting about it yesterday, it was before that Warburton interview (because Warburton wasn't interviewed until after the team announcement at 12:30), so people were having a pop at Gatland before any actual quotes were actually available relevant to it. So it is fair to want a bit more substance first (as that BBC article was rubbish) and easy to assume that people were suckered in by a headline (though it was mostly on the main thread and the person who posted on it the most is a bit of a poor wum).
Also, normal behaviour doesn't strictly mean it's a constant thing. Normally my twins are well behaved, but it doesn't mean they're angels does it (this is not suggesting you don't know the meaning of the word normal)?
If this was another referee, this would be a non story. Just because it's Rolland reffing, it is being made into a bigger deal than it needs to be. There's more justification in that Warburton interview, where he says that Gatland will be made fully aware of what referees are expecting, so really he doesn't need to waste his time meeting a referee before the first game to hear about things he should already have been told. I'm sure he has other things he needs to do, like aiming a motivational comment at South Africa.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
The really interesting things might be where the info came from. Since we don't normally hear about these Ref/Coach/Captain meetings someone must have told the press that Gatland was not going to meet Rolland.
I suspect that was one of Warren's usual little mindgame ploys.
I reckon he just can't help himself.
With his history of those sorts of pre-game antics he really can have no complaints if the press play the same game too.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Trebanog
The BBC article might have been rubbish, but it was correct - Gatland was going to turn down a meeting with the ref. Given that the ref was Rolland, it was bound to be picked up on, even if Gatland's reason for turning down the meeting were perfectly reasonable and had nothing to do with 2011.
For what it's worth, I still think it's a bit strange. Rolland's not the only ref with a particular MO that coaches know beforehand.

On the upside, Tommy's back in the green jumper. I hope I can get a tidy stream for that one...

Morning everyone
Still have a cold, so I'm staying in. The weather's not motivating me to think otherwise right now, which is frustrating cause I haven't been to the gym all week. At least the roof is closed at the MS. Someone I work with is singing with the male voice choir on the pitch this evening. He's had to learn the SA national anthem (as well as all the usual Welshy songs) - even the Afrikaans bit, and he sings it well to be fair. I just hope the tennis doesn't over-run on BBC 2 and spoil the coverage like last year (...or was it the year before...?).
Swanny - Dot and Lady Gaga chatting is odd... but I really can't be arrsed with Lady Gaga. It could be my age cause I grew up with Madonna, but when I see LG I just think "Seen it all before...". I think LG tries too hard to be weird. You can tell she's not really a natural eccentric, just a posh American trying to be one. I don't doubt she can sing and write a pop song, but it's not her who's being creative only her stylists. Still, the kids like her and I'm sure when I was younger people were saying the same things about Madge.
